SPY-SHERIFF

Unread postby dlinder » December 21st, 2005, 2:36 pm

I have just had my desktop, browser and no telling what else high jacked. My desktop has a great new background that politely informs me my computer is infected with Spy Ware. Also now installed on my computer is a purported Anti Spy Ware program called: Spy-Sheriff. I didn't install it and it seems uninstallable.

There also was an event when my run box expanded and opened ms paint.

I need help badly. I installed the high jack program and the following is my log: (Thanks in advance for any help)

I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware but still am having home page reset and getting mysterious prompts that my registry is changed.

First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad; that way you have a hard copy of these instructions; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Download AboutBuster from HERE

Unzip AboutBuster in an own, private folder eg. C:\AboutBuster.
Start AboutBuster.exe. Click OK>Update, Check For Update and download the updates if present.
Close Aboutbuster, we will use it later.
If You are get an error while updating, let me know ASAP.
Do NOT run it yet (just update it) please

Download CWShredder HERE
Do not use it yet!

Next, please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
  • Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
  • Click "Folder options"
  • Select the "View" tab
  • Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
  • Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
  • Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Start AboutBuster and let it scan. Once it is done choose exit, it will automatically create a log in the same folder where aboutbuster is in.

Start Cwshredder and click FIX

Also, delete the following files (if they exist):

Delete files/folder from the following directories (But not the directory itself, for example delete all files/folder IN temp; but not temp itself!)
  • C:\Windows\Temp\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Peggy\Local Settings\Temp\ <<---- This one is most important to clean out...you have several "Nasties" running from here.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<All other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Peggy\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\ <---This will delete your internet cache--including cookies. This is recommended and strongly suggested. But you will have to manually log on to all internet sites the first time you visit them again.
  • C:\Documents and Settings\<All other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
  • Empty your "Recycle Bin"

There are always a couple of files that you will not be able to delete..this is normal and expected

Restart your computer and rerun HijackThis. Please post a new HijackThis log AND teh log from AboutBuster in a reply to this thread.

Yes I did.

This may further help you fix my mess...

This is my mom's pc and when I booted into safe the system prompted for me to log in as admin or her user account. I first chose admin but failed to see the \Local Settings\ you asked me to look for so I rebooted and logged on as her then completed your steps.

Thanks,

David

Well I was trying to do this with a "shortened" version of the following fix, as the 2nd post you send did not have the service ith the weird name (first 023 line in HJT). You have many oof the following tools so just download what you don't have.

First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad; that way you have a hard copy of these instructions in Safemode; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix.
Plese work the fix as it is presented and do NOT skip any steps.

  • Download AboutBuster from HERE

Unzip AboutBuster in an own, private folder eg. C:\AboutBuster.
Start AboutBuster.exe. Click OK>Update, Check For Update and download the updates if present.
Close Aboutbuster, we will use it later.
If You are get an error while updating, let me know ASAP.
You can download the rest of the items requested below while you are waiting for a response; but do NOT run any yet please
  • Download CCleaner from HERE
    Install it using the defaults.
    Do not use it yet.
  • Download CWShredder HERE
    Do not use it yet!
  • Download this regfix: HSfix
Unzip it to your desktop please..again; don't use it yet!

    +++++++BEGINING TO SEE A PATTERN HUH??+++++++++++++++
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite, it is a free version of the program.
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck...
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • The program will now open to the main screen.
    • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files:
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
      • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
      • Close Ewido Security Suite
    • If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
      Ewido manual updates
    • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.
  • Next, please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
    • Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
    • Click "Folder options"
    • Select the "View" tab
    • Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
    • Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
    • Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

  • Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
    http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml
  • Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:
It is possible that some of the random name listed below (mostly the 04) may have changed....They will be in the same place as the old ones..shouldn't be too hard to figure out which are the bad ones. We can always restore an entry if needed.

    • O2 - BHO: Class - {F0FB122A-53DE-FBFE-7C53-741CBF04D314} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winaf32.dll
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windj.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\windj.exe
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cruj32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cruj32.exe
  • Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".
  • Go to start >run and type: "services.msc" (no quotes) and click OK
Scroll down in that list and see if any/all following services are present:

    Network Security Service (NSS)
    Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper
    Workstation NetLogon Service <<------
  • Please make sure it is exactly the same written as above, because there are also legit services that look very similar to the ones listed, so please choose the right one!! For example, there's also a legit service called Remote Procedure Call (RPC), without the word Helper in it. That is a good one, so please don't select that one.
  • Doubleclick on it. In the window that will appear, click on "Stop" (if not greyed out) and change the Startup Type to DISABLED.
Click apply and OK and close all open windows.
  • Start Aboutbuster and let it scan. When the scan is done and you choose exit, it will automatically create a log in the same folder where aboutbuster is in.
  • Start Cwshredder and click FIX
  • Doubleclick on HSfix you downloaded earlier before which is present on your desktop and when it asks you if you want to add the contents to the registry, click yes/ok
  • Still in safe mode Run Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner (bottom right)
  • Now open Ewido Security Suite
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • While the scan is in progress you will be promted to clean files, click OK.
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
    • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located at the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
    • Click Save Report.
    • Now save the report .txt file to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido Security Suite
  • Go to start>Control Panel>Internet Options>tab programs> and click restore websettings.
  • Reboot your PC back to normal.
  • Run Housecall by clicking HERE. Once the page loads click the Scan Now. It's Free! Then choose your country from the list. Click the GO button. Now click on Complete Scan. You may get a box asking if you want to install and run a program from Trend. Choose Yes. Now check teh box next to your hard drive from the list offered. Leave both boxes checked and click Next. Let it run. When it's done Save a copy of the report and post it back here along with a FINAL HijackThis log.
  • Post a
    • new hijackthis-log
    • log from ewido
    • log from aboutbuster (It will be in the aboutbuster folder)

Note:
Credit to miekiemoes & LDTate from whom most of this was taken.

I followed all your instructions and this computer is now running faster than I've ever seen it! :)

Kudos to JWBirdsong, miekiemos & LDTate!!!!

Here's the final logs for your review:

Please note that I ran Housecall but wasn't smart enough to see how to save the results. This program did, however, find a few malware and grayware objects...

Congratulations, your log is clean.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Reverse the procedure you used earlier and re-enable Tea Timer

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.
