My Hotmail email account has been infected - all the addresses in my address book have been receiving unsolicited emails - is this a problem with my email account or with my computer?

Re: Is my computer infected? please view my logs

Unread postby troy3636 » January 10th, 2012, 3:49 pm

Hello Greg Boulton,

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forum. My name is Troy and I will be assisting you with the malware issues on your computer.
Because I am still in training, all the advice I give must first be checked by an instructor, therefore there may be some delays in my replies.

A few things before we get started
  1. If you have not already done so Please read these forum rules.
  2. Please be aware that removing malware is not without risk and while unrecoverable damage to systems is rare, it can happen and require a re-format and re-install of your operating system. Because of this it is a good idea to back-up anything important saved on your computer.
  3. Any fixes I may post will be specific to your computer and should not be used on other computers.
  4. While we work on your computer please don't install any new programs, try any other fixes, or run any tools other than those requested.
  5. If at any time my instructions are not clear please ask before proceeding.
  6. Failure to respond within 3 days will result in this topic being closed - If you need more time to complete the steps required, please let me know.

Hi Troy the computer is used for home use - since I posted the logs I have run Microsoft scanner "ert". The scan deleted files "Exploit:HTML/cve-2010-4452A and VIR Tool:35/obfuscator.bh" I have since realized that I should not have run the scanner - is this a problem? regards Greg

Hi Greg Boulton,

Please refrain from running using any additional tools other than the ones I ask for. It makes it harder to research the logs.

The symptoms you describe sound like a compromised e-mail account so I advise you to change your hotmail account password.

You DDS logs do indicate an infection on your computer. Please follow these steps to start the cleanup process.

Step 1
Back up registry with ERUNT
  1. Please download ERUNT by Lars Hederer and save it to your desktop. alternate download
  2. Double click erunt-setup-exe and follow the prompts to install ERUNT using the default settings.
  3. When asked if you want to add ERUNT to the Start-up folder select NO
  4. Make sure the box marked launch ERUNT is checked and click Finish
  5. Follow the prompts to create a backup to the default location.
  6. under backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  7. When you see a pop up message saying Registry backup is complete! click OK to finish. If you do not see this message DO NOT continue let me know.

Step 2
No Anti-Virus!
It is extremely important to keep one up to date Anti-Virus program running on your computer.
I personally recommend one of these free programs.

Installing new Anti-Virus Software
  1. Download the new Anti-virus product to your computer desktop.
  2. Save any work. Close all applications, especially your Internet connection.
  3. Uninstall any existing anti-virus product... Use the AV uninstall option if available.
  4. Reboot your computer, if not done during the uninstall.
  5. Install the new AV product... following installation instructions.
  6. Check for updates to the new AV product, if not done during install setup.
  7. Run a full scan of your computer.

Step 3
OTL
Please download OTL ... by Old Timer . Save it to your Desktop.
  1. Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  2. Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
Leave the remaining selections to the default settings.
  3. Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  4. When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened, maximized
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized on task bar.
  5. Please post the contents of both OTL.txt and Extras.txt files in your next reply.

Do you know what the following programs are?
AUSkey software 1.3.13.2
Common-Use Signing Interface

Please include in your next reply
  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt
  • Answers to my questions
  • Any changes in the way your computer is behaving

Hi Troy yes you are correct my email account has been compromised and my Hotmail account is now blocked (I can not sign in) I have done the registry backup with ERUNT and have downloaded (and run) AVAST. I have also downloaded OTL but when I did the scan it kept freezing so I deleted it and downloaded it from another source. I then ran the scan completly but then it froze - my computer now seems slow and I cannot use Firefox (it will not load). I dont know what the programs are that you have inquired about - I purchased this computer second hand ,it was orignally part of an office network - maybe this is something to do with the programs regards Greg

Hi Greg Boulton,

Step 1
MGADiag.exe
  • Please download MGA Diagnostic Tool and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.

Step 2
TDSSKiller
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. Note: It is VERY IMPORTANT to run this from your desktop.
  1. Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. abc123.com).
  2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If any suspicious or malicious objects are detected ensure Skip is selected then click Continue. Do not attempt to fix anything yet!
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

When running OTL, did Avast give you the option to "open in sandbox"?
If so, please try to run OTL again making sure to select "open normally".

If OTL still will not run, please reply back and we will have to try another route.

Please include in your next reply:
  • MGADiag log
  • TDSSKiller log
  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt
