Another jzip/searchqu casualty...

Unread postby mstearns » December 9th, 2011, 2:26 pm

Hi all,

I'm embarrassed to admit it but I've fallen victim to the jzip/searchqu curse that's nailed so many others. I've looked at some of the previous threads for this but don't want to follow the exact instructions because they might be tailored to that user's computer, based on their logs. But, I have downloaded OTL, so I have that ready, if needed.

I'm a bit of a PC noob, so any help is definitely appreciated. I'm running Win7 Ultimate. (note: I apologize for not seeing the log posting requirements. Please find them below)

Thanks much,
Mike

Hi and welcome to MalwareRemoval.com, sorry for any delay in answering your request for help, the forum is really busy.
My name is Diver79, and I will be helping you with your malware problems. I am currently in training at the Malware University. All of my instructions need to be checked and approved by a teacher, which may lead to a slight delay.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions given are for THIS computer only! Using these instructions on a different computer, can make it inoperable!
  • Please DO NOT run any other software or scans whilst I am helping you.

Note: If you haven't done so already, please ensure you have read the following article. ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
diver79 wrote:Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.
Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Hi mstearns,

Remove P2P Programs
  • I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.
    µTorrent
    uTorrentBar Toolbar
  • Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
  • Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

  • Click on the start button.
  • In the Search programs and files text entry box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click enter.
  • Press the "Uninstall" button to uninstall the programs listed above (in red) and any other P2P you have installed NOW.
  • While you are there please also remove NCH EN Toolbar.
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

I need to get some more information from your computer before I can post a fix. Please run the scans below and get back to me with the logs.

MGA Diagnostic Tool Vista/Win7
  • Please download MGA Diagnostic Tool and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click on MGADiag.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.

Run CKScanner
  • Please download CKScanner from Here
  • Important: - Save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click CKScanner.exe > select " Run as administrator " then click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved. Please Run the program only once.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Hi mstearns,

While going through your logs I found out that you have downloaded cracked software and that you are actively using it.
adobe photoshop cs5 extended

Our forum policy Here says we will not help people who use cracked or pirated software.
You likely got infected by using cracked software or visiting crack sites.
Hence, i would like you to remove all the crack/keygen applications that are present on your system, then run CKScanner again and post the new log.

NOTE: If you give me advice that the software/Keygens have been removed & I find it has not (the tools we use can & will detect it) then I will have no choice but to closed this thread.

diver,

that's totally reasonable and i thought i had done so (i actually never used it - i'm not such a noob that i'd use anything with "crack" in the filename). i'm fairly sure all traces are gone - i've purchased CS5, so you might see that at some point, but i definitely tried to get rid of that cracked version. please let me know if you see traces that i missed!

in the meantime, here's the new ckfiles.txt:

Hi mstearns,

OTL - Custom Fix
Please right-click on the filename link below and select "Save target as..." or "Save Link as...", choose the Desktop location, and choose to save file as :Fix.txt
SQW7-Vista_x64.TXT

Download the OTL Scanner
Please download OTL.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
Right Click the OTL icon and choose "Run as administrator".
  • Click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • You will see a popup dialog reporting "No fix has been provided. Click OK to load from a file or Cancel". Click on OK
  • When the Open dialog comes up, Navigate to the Desktop, scroll to find the file named Fix.txt and click Open
  • Some text will appear in the Custom scans/Fixes box.
  • Click the Run Fix button.
  • Let the program run unhindered and reboot the PC when it is done.
When the computer Reboots, and you start your usual account, a Notepad text file will appear.
  • Copy the contents of that file and post it in your next reply. The file will also appear on your desktop as OTL.txt

Next:

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Right click SystemLook.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *Fun4IM*
    *Bandoo*
    *Searchqu*
    *iLivid*
    *whitesmoke*
    *datamngr*
    *trolltech*

    :folderfind
    *Fun4IM*
    *Bandoo*
    *Searchqu*
    *iLivid*
    *whitesmoke*
    *datamngr*
    *trolltech*

    :Regfind
    Fun4IM
    Bandoo
    Searchqu
    iLivid
    whitesmoke
    datamngr
    kelkoopartners
    trolltech

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
Because of the Registry searches, the scan may take 15 minutes or a bit more to run on a large machine. Please be patient.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Hi mstearns,

Good, the fix ran successfully, we have some leftovers on the machine. Please run the OTL fix and Systemlook scan using the directions below.

Run OTL Script
We need to run an OTL Fix
  • Right click on OTL.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Image textbox. Do not include the word Code
    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\Windows\Prefetch\SEARCHQU TOOLBAR UNINSTALL.EX-6563C897.pf
    C:\Users\Mike\AppData\LocalLow\DataMngr
    :reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{9BB47C17-9C68-4BB3-B188-DD9AF0FD2102}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Tracing\Searchqu Toolbar uninstall_RASAPI32]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Tracing\Searchqu Toolbar uninstall_RASMANCS]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DataMngr]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Tracing\datamngrUI_RASAPI32]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Tracing\datamngrUI_RASMANCS]
    [-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2577781002-74792837-3521091950-1001\Software\Datamngr]
    :commands
    [emptyflash]
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyjava]
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.

Next:

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Right click SystemLook.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *Fun4IM*
    *Bandoo*
    *Searchqu*
    *iLivid*
    *whitesmoke*
    *datamngr*
    *trolltech*

    :folderfind
    *Fun4IM*
    *Bandoo*
    *Searchqu*
    *iLivid*
    *whitesmoke*

    Searchqu
    iLivid
    whitesmoke
    datamngr
    kelkoopartners

How is the PC performing now, are you still seeing searchqu on the machine?

Lets run an online scan to see if it finds any leftovers.

ESET Online Scanner:
Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your Avast! Anti-Virus.

Disable Antivirus
  • Open Microsoft Security Essentials.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Select Real-Time Protection, and clear the check box for “Turn on real-time protection”.

Vista/Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here to run the scan.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Hi mstearns,

Congratulations your PC is now feee from infection 8)

There is still some work to do before we finish up. Follow the below instructions to remove OTL and flush out the infected restore points.

Clean up with OTL
  • Right click on OTL.exe and select Run as Administrator, answer yes to allow the program to run.
  • Click the CleanUp! button
  • Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTL attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Create a new, clean System Restore point
  • Click Start, Right Click on Computer, and select Properties.
  • In the left pane, click System Protection > Create.
  • Give this restore point a descriptive name and click Create.
  • Click Apply and OK.
Note: Do not clear infected/old System Restore points before creating a new System Restore point first!

Flush infected System Restore points
  • Click on the Start button, Right Click on Computer, and select Properties.
  • In the left pane, click System Protection.
  • Click the Configure button.
  • Press the Delete button to delete all restore points. Click Continue if prompted.
  • Click OK to return to the System Protection Window.
  • Press the Close button and then OK to exit the System Protection Window.

Additional Security Tips.
Use Windows Update
Your computer does not have the latest service pack for Windows 7 installed. You should run Windows update to install the latest security updates for your computer until the computer is up to date. Applying these updates will ensure your computer is less vulnerable to infections of this nature.

Update your Antivirus programs and other programs regularly.
Secunia Personal Software Inspector - Copyright © Secunia. This app will monitor programs on your computer for known vulnerabilities. You can set it to auto-update for you, or just prompt you if an update is available. I highly recommend it.
F-secure Health Check - Copyright © F-Secure Corporation. F-Secure Health Check is a free application that tells you if your computer is protected and helps you fix possible security issues.

Read, stay informed.
To help minimize the chances of becoming re-infected, please read.
Computer Security - a short guide to staying safer online

Please let me know that you completed the cleanup steps, the create/purge System Restore point steps and reviewed the rest of the post. Once I receive your reply, unless there are other malware questions or concerns, I will have this topic closed as resolved.
