Computer Slow, Adobe Reader 11 virus?

Unread postby t-risk7 » December 8th, 2011, 7:54 am

My computer starts fine, but then quickly slows down. At some point in the past few weeks I may have downloaded adobe reader 11. But only Adobe X icon shows up. I now understand adobe X has some bugs of its own. I had to take adobe off of safe mode about a month ago because I couldn't access pdf files or watch stuff on you tube.

After being online only a few moments, my computer slows down. It also seems to always be running something. I eventually have trouble even going to web sites I have just visited. It says cannot find server or taking to long.

In october I my virus scan detected a high alert virus. WIN 32/Sirefef! CPcUcc. It quarantined it and I deleted it. My computer has ran fine until now, so the virus may be unrelated.
Also, my Malware bites will say it is out of date every time I try to run it even though I update it at least once a week.

Thanks for your help.

Was this before or after you re-installed Windows XP?

Are you using a trial version of the security software from Computer Associates?

This would have been after I re-installed windows. Computer Associates is the full version.
Computer Associates actually picked up 2 instances of WIN 32/Sirefef! CPcUcc on the same date and quarantined both. On 10/13/11 the same virus showed up, but as a low threat level. It showed up as a low threat level twice on 10/13/11 and low threat level on 10/14/11.
After looking at my CA scan record, the Hight threat level was on 11/10/11. So it showed up as a low threat level in october, then a high threat level in november.

For a heads up, I already removed adobe 11 and malware bytes before I read this. Sorry.

That is all the info I have for now. Thank you for your help.

By Adobe 11, are you referring to the following entry in the uninstall list?
Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin

Are you using this computer for any business related activities?

  • Click the Scan button.
  • After a short while when the scan reports "Scan finished successfully", click Save log & save the log to your desktop.
  • Click OK > Exit.
  • Note: Do not attempt to fix anything at this stage!
  • Two files will be created, aswMBR.txt & a file named MBR.dat.
  • MBR.dat is a backup of the MBR(master boot record), do not delete it..
  • I strongly suggest you keep a copy of this backup stored on an external device.
  • Copy & Paste the contents of aswMBR.txt into your next reply.

Re: Computer Slow, Adobe Reader 11 virus?

Unread postby vict0r » December 12th, 2011, 4:00 pm

The OTL log shows that the Computer Assosiates firewall and antimalware are disabled, but the DDS log showed them as enabled. Are you experiencing problems with the installed Computer Associates security suite?

Uninstall Java

Out of date Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. Please uninstall Java, I'll give you instructions to install the latest version later.

  • Click on Start > Run.
  • In the open text box write appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.
  • Wait for the list of programs in the Add/Remove control panel to appear.
  • You can now uninstall Java(TM) 6 Update 26.

SystemLook

There was a removable drive plugged in when you scanned with OTL. I would like you to have it plugged in while performing these instructions.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :contents
    E:\AUTORUN.INF

    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNSCache /s

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Please start Malwarebytes' Anti Malware (MBAM) (already installed).
  • Click the Update tab and then click the Check for Updates button to perform the update.
  • Please repeat the previous step (update) if the database was not updated (needed if the program itself was updated).
  • When the update is finished, click the Scanner tab, select Perform Quick Scan and then click the Scan button.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

If you have run Malwarebytes recently and it has detected infections, please post the log found in the directory described above.

Remember to post:
  • Describe problems with CA security suite (if appl.)
  • SystemLook log.
  • Malwarebytes log(s)

I get a lot of block/allow boxes for any download, etc for Computer Associates. I've only had it for a few months and as far as I know it is working just fine. I do have trouble navigating it though, of course that is probably due to unfamiliarity.

Was your usb-stick plugged in when you did the SystemLook scan?

The computer has a custom hosts file. Did you add it with Spybot Search and Destroy?

t-risk7 wrote:The database is version 7622 and my other lap tops version is 8358.

Please try the manual update:

Download the latest Malwarebytes offline database, save the file on the desktop:
mbam-rules.exe
Double-click the file to install the definitions. Delete mbam-rules.exe when finished.

Now rescan with Malwarebytes Anti Malware as described in my previous post. Include the log in your next reply.

It was an MVPS hosts file download I was recommended from a MWU advisor.

I didn't have a jump drive. It was either my printer or external hard drive, but both were plugged in.

My Malwarebytes still hasn't updated. It is still the same version. But it did pick up this virus in the above post.
Thanks again for your help.

Download ComboFix

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

Please download ComboFix from one of the following links, do not run the tool yet:

Link1
Link2

Disable CA AntiVirus

Right click on CA icon (a shield) in the system tray, near the clock.
Click on CA Anti-Virus > Snooze Anti-Virus Protection.
When prompted, enter in 999 and click on Snooze.

Disable CA Firewall

Right click on the CA icon in the system tray.
Click on CA Personal Firewall > Disable CA Personal Firewall
Please verify that the firewall is disabled: Do the above steps again and look for "Enable CA Personal Firewall." If this is the case, then you successfully disabled the CA Personal Firewall Guard.

Run ComboFix

Double click the ComboFix icon on the desktop to run the tool and click Yes to the disclaimer.

Please install the Recovery Console if prompted.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you if your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Please include the ComboFix log (C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply for further review.

Please enable CA Anti-Virus and Firewall after ComboFix is finished.

Could not figure how to turn off The Computer Associates allow/block box. It kept popping up. Says "wants access to start program "c:\32788RFWJF\swreg.3xe".
Then a message popped up and said combo fix might be compromised by a virus: 'Virut' Download another version and then gave link to bleepingcomputer. I stopped and did nothing else. I turned on my firewall and disabled snooze. I then deleted combo fix. Should I try the other option: I downloaded link 1 the first time.
Thanks.

Go ahead and try the instructions again. Do not run Combofix until you have successfully disabled CA Antivirus & Firewall.
