Browser Hijacked

Unread postby rernst » September 20th, 2011, 1:38 pm

Hi,

I am writing on behalf of a friend of mine who is a bit computer-challenged. His Mozilla Firefox appears to have been hijacked (but, interestingly, not IE). We ran CWShredder for CoolWebSearch and that came up clean. His home page is not being changed, but his searches are being redirected. Two of the sites are "comparedby.us" and "tazinga". We downloaded and ran HiJackThis. Below is the log. Thanks for any and all assistance.

Richard

Sorry you've had to wait so long, we've been very busy.

If you still need help with your problem .....

Download DDS and save it to your Desktop (must be in this location).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both to your Desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of both into your next reply please.

I am going to take these instructions down to him tomorrow and run this myself. I have a question: How/where do I disable any "script blocker"? Do you mean pop-up blockers? Please explain. Thanks.

Never mind.....I Googled it. I will check his Firefox add-ons to make sure there are none active. Thanks again.

Hi, I went to his home and looked at his PC. First I updated Java. Then, I uninstalled an old version of Adobe Reader and installed the current one. Then, I decided to first try completely uninstalling Firefox (including all registry entries and leftover files and folders) and reinstalling it. To my surprise, this actually seems to have solved the problem. His searches still give him a Google-like list. But now when he clicks on one of them, the link takes you where it's supposed to.

So, I think we're good right now--unless I hear from him that the hijackings have returned. If that happens, I will contact you again and we'll start the DDS process.

Thanks for all that you folks do.
