Computer unable to start

Unread postby micbil » September 8th, 2011, 1:26 pm

Good day, I'd like to start by saying that I am no expert so please bare with me. Two days ago I got trapped into clicking on a popup "you've won a free gift card". I followed the steps by entering info. (ie my cell phone number) until I read that they would send a PIN on my cell phone, that I would have to play the game at a cost everyday. At that point I stopped and closed the IE windows. What happened next is that my desktop picture was gone, it now showed a black background. All my icons were there still. I did a restart and all looked normal again until I restarted my computer a few hours later. That's when I received the "your computer was unable to start" and to run the repair utility. After it was done with the repair, the computer came back up and all looked okay. But as soon I as do a restart or a shutdown, I have to go through the same process everytime ie: do a repair or a restore. I did a restore back to 2 weeks ago, I ran McAfee which found nothing, I ran Malwarebytes which found: trojan.ctrlredirGen and pum.hijack.startmenu. Both were removed. I also ran CleanMyPC REgistry Cleaner which found a long list and all were fixed. In summary, after I go through the repair utility or do a restore, computer works fine until I do a restart or shutdown/start. When the computer is booting up, I don't get to see the Windows logo, it only goes to the point where it says Microsoft and a progress bar and the screen stays black.

I sure hope I've explained myself clearly. Thanks in advance for your help. Greatly appreciated :)
Sunday Sept. 11
I hadn't shut down the computer since I posted my problem. Today I decided to do a restart. Took a while to shut down then the screen went black and nothing else happened. I had to turn off computer by powering it off. Of course the problem remains after powering it on, it has to go thourgh the "startup repair".

Hi,

We are sorry to see your topic is over three days old and no one has yet been able to respond and offer help.

If you still require assistance, please post a link to your topic in our Waiting for help with malware removal? forum, and our staff will make an effort to assist you as promptly as possible. Only post a LINK to this topic, DO NOT post your DDS log!

Please do not reply to this topic.

If you haven't posted within two days in the "Waiting for help with malware removal?" forum, we will assume you have been able to get assistance in other ways and this topic will be closed.

Hello, I Am Alander :)

Welcome to the Malware Removal forums.

I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

DDS logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.

As I am still training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by an Admin or Moderator.

Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts. While it shouldn't be too long, you can be assured you will get the best possible advice.

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Hi, you are missing attached.txt in ur post
Step 1.
Run DDS Scan Again
  1. Disable any script blocking software you have running before running DDS.
  2. Please double click dds.com to run the tool. (File name will be different if alternate download used).
Vista - W7 users: You must right click on the file above and select "Run As Administrator" to run the tool.
A black window will open with some instructions/comments...
  3. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
Caution: The above logs will NOT be saved... you must save them to your desktop.
  4. Please post both the DDS.txt and Attach.txt files in your next reply.

Hi Alander,
Copied and pasted are the new logs as requested. I ran those earlier today after reading that I should have disabled script blocking. I hope I successfully disabled ALL script blockers. Please tell me if I can now enable all of them. Thank you so much for your help.
