Malware attack

Unread postby jennick8707 » July 17th, 2011, 9:36 pm

Evening, while searching the internet for coupons I was attacked and my browser closed. Now antime I boot up (other than in safe mode) I cannot open my browser or any other program. Each time I get a notice in my system tray saying it has been blocked. The program (malware) puts a icon in my system tray and calls itself Defender (i think), although I cannot find the program in program files. I tried using spybot and microsofts malware tool but nothing finds it. I am operating in safe mode to post this. Help

Hi and welcome to MalwareRemoval.com, sorry for any delay in answering your request for help, the forum is really busy.
My name is Diver79, and I will be helping you with your malware problems. I am currently in training at the Malware University. All of my instructions need to be checked and approved by a teacher, which may lead to a slight delay.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer only! Using these instructions on a different computer, can make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!
Note: If you haven't done so already, please ensure you have read the following article. ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.
Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
How do I backup my files and folders in XP?
How to backup your data - Vista/Win7

Researching your logs now, will post instructions soon.

Hi jennick8707,

Please follow the instructions below.

Step 1 - Disable Spybot S&D Teatimer

From your log i can see this that you are running a Spybot S&D Teatimer. This might interfere with fixes we are about to do so we need to disable it.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:

Hi jennick8707,

Are you still having problems when booting to normal mode? If so, please describe.

In the meantime I need you to check a file for infections. Instructions below.

Step 1 - Online Multi Antivirus file scan
Please go to either: Jotti or Virus Total and upload -only one file per scan- the following file(s) for scanning:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\fuomlsk.sys

Using Jotti
  1. Choose the appropriate language... once a language is selected, you'll see a message "Ready to receive files"
  2. Copy -one- file name from the list and press the Browse button.
  3. Paste the copied file name into the "file name" area of the "Choose file to upload" window... then press Open.
The file name should now appear in the online scanner's "File to scan:" box.
  4. Click on Submit..button.
If you receive the message: This file has been scanned before. The results for this previous scan are listed below.
Please press the Scan again button, so your file will be scanned.
  5. The file will be uploaded and scanned by various antivirus scanners..this may take a few minutes.
  6. When all scans have completed... Highlight the results text from the Jotti's malware scan box.
  7. Copy the selected text... Open Notepad... Paste the contents into Notepad... Save the file to a convenient place.
  8. Please repeat this procedure for each file listed above.
  9. Paste the contents of all the Jotti scan results in your next reply.

Using Virus Total
  1. Copy -one- file name from the list and press the Browse button.
  2. Paste the copied file name into the "file name" area of the "Choose file to upload" window... then press Open.
The file name should now appear in the online scanner's text entry box.
  3. Click on Send File...button.
  4. The file will be queued, uploaded and scanned by various antivirus scanners..this may take a few minutes.
If you receive the message: File has already been analysed:
Please press the Reanalyse file now button, so your file will be scanned.
  5. When the scan is completed...press the "Compact" icon
  6. The results will be shown in a grid like window... right-click on the text, choose Select All, then Copy the entire contents.
  7. Open Notepad...Paste the result contents into the Notepad window...Save this file to a convenient place.
  8. Please repeat this procedure for each file listed above.
  9. Paste the contents of all the Virus Total results in your next reply.

Hi jennick8707,

Looks like malwarebytes got the rogue Anti Virus.

We need to check if there are any remaining threats on the PC, please follow the instructions below.

Step 1 - Remove Out of date Programs
  • The following programs installed on your PC are out of date and represent a significant risk of re-infection.
    HijackThis 1.99.1
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
  • Click on start
  • Then Run
  • In the open text entry box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click enter.
  • Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Step 2 - Update Adobe Reader, Java and Anti Virus
Adobe Reader
  • You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files.
  • Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
  • Go Here to download and install Adobe Reader X (10.0.1).

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE).
Please download from HERE
  • Find Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 26.
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  • Choose the correct Platform and Multi-language. Next, check the box that says I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.
  • Click the Continue button.
  • Click on the filename under Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop.
  • Close all active windows.
  • Install the program.

Update Anti-Virus
There is a newer version of AVG available however I would reccomend uninstalling AVG and installing either of the free products below;

Step 3 - ATF Cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Step 4 - ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista/Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go herehere to run the scan.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
