I re-ran aswMBR.exe

I ran a scan and then clicked the fix button. During the fixing process my computer completely froze. Even the screen was frozen. I turned the computer off. When I rebooted I ran the scan and the ROOTKIT seems to be gone. Here is the log from the latest scan:

I don't seem to be having the redirect problem anymore, but I've only tested a few times.

I still seem to get the svchost.exe file or wuauclt.exe file that immediately starts taking up all my memory when I login.

Thanks so much for you help so far!

I removed all the Java updates and Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.

I installed Java from the link you provided.

I then had cdrom.sys tested at the sites you suggested:

Hi,
Is your Internet Service Provider SBC Internet Services?

Upload File/Files for testing

Please go to jotti.org or Virustotal

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
c:\windows\system32\btesvw32.dll
c:\windows\system32\btwldw32.dll

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the permalink (web address) in your next response.
Example of web address :
Image
Repeat the procedure for each of the files in the white box
You should come back with the results of the 2 files

Well, my ISP is AT&T which I think is the same as SBC.

I ran Each File at both websites, just in case.

c:\windows\system32\btesvw32.dll

Download and Run ComboFix

  • Please download ComboFix from one of the following links.

    Link 1.

    Link 2.

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**
  • Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

I thought I uninstalled Norton AV 2006 years ago, but it said it was still running. I will try to remove it completely. ComboFix ran the scan anyway and here is the log:

Step 1
ComboFix - CFScript
This script is for this user and computer ONLY! Using this tool incorrectly could cause problems with your operating system... preventing it from ever starting again!
You will not have Internet access when you execute ComboFix. All open windows will need to be closed!
  1. Please open Notepad and copy/paste all the text below... into the window:

    Code: Select all
    http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=57274&start=15#p586013

    Collect::
    c:\windows\system32\btesvw32.dll
    c:\windows\system32\btwldw32.dll

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\btwdlins]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\btwldw32]
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\IsWow64Process]
    "c:\windows\system32\btwldw32.dll"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\KERNEL32.DLL]
    "c:\windows\system32\btwldw32.dll"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\Service Pack 3]
    "c:\windows\system32\btwldw32.dll"=-

    DDS::

    DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} - hxxp://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinsta ... s-i586.cab

  2. Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt
  3. Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
*Only* when the 2 items above (Step 3) have been taken care of...
  4. Drag the CFScript.txt (icon) into the ComboFix.exe icon... as seen in the image below:
    Image
This will cause ComboFix to run again.
Do Not use your keyboard or mouse click anywhere in the ComboFix window, as this may cause the program to stall or crash.
Do Not touch your computer when ComboFix is running!
  5. When finished ComboFix will create a log file... you can save this file to a convenient place.
Please copy/paste the ComboFix log file in your next reply.

Step 2
Norton Removal Tool

Please go to the Norton Removal Tool main page Here
  • Under Choose your product: click on I have a Norton 2006/2007/2008/2009/2010/2011 product link.
  • Download and run the Norton Removal Tool then Reboot your computer.

  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Please download ATF Cleaner ... by Atribune. Alternate download site: here.
It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources.
It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, detecting the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).

  1. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

  4. Reply OK to the total bytes removed...box, then click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 3.
Please disable your Anti Virus AND Anti Spywares Programs before running this scan

Step 4
ESET online scannner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on Start.
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.

Hi, How is your computer doing now?

Clear Java cache

  • Click on Start > Control Panel > Classic view then double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked.
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  • Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

3 Day Response
Hi...
It has been almost 2 days since my last post to you.
  • Do you still need help with this problem?
  • Do you need more time?
  • Are you having problems understanding or following my instructions?
  • Lacking of symptoms might not mean that your computer is CLEAN
Just let me know what's going on otherwise...
After 36 hrs., if you have not replied to this thread... it will be closed!

Sorry! I cleared the Java cache. It seems to be running alright now. It's still really slow, but maybe that is because it only has 1G of RAM?

I really appreciate all your help!!

Hi your latest set of logs appear to be clean! :D
Unfortunately, your slow computer is not a malware issue and we are unable to deal with it. I would advise you add another piece of ram to upgrade the performance if you can.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the box and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
    Image
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.
Next

Clean up with OTC

Download OTC by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.

  • Double-click OTC.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button
  • Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
You can now delete any tools we used if they remain on your Desktop.

You also do not seem have any evidence of a third party firewall.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Remove Outdated programs
  • Click on start
  • Then Run
  • In the open text entry box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click enter.
  • Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the following.

Spybot - Search & Destroy
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

Update Firefox & Thunderbird
  • Your version of Firefox and Thunderbird are outdated.
  • In the Firefox browser click Help > Check for updates to install the latest version.
  • Get the latest version of ThunderBird HERE

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install Malwarebytes Anti-malware
These are anti-malware applications that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. They include a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start.
You can find information and Download it from HERE

MVPS Hosts

Install MVPS Hosts File From Here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
You can Find the Tutorial HERE

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer
You can do that HERE

Read some information HERE On how to prevent Malware

Please read the article below which will give you a few suggestions for how to minimize your chances of getting another infection.
Computer Security - a short guide to staying safer online
Also please read this great article How to prevent Malware by miekiemoes.
I would be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Safe surfing!
