Mozilla Firefox Keeps Freezing - Hijack This File Posted

Unread postby Hvnly777 » June 18th, 2011, 6:12 pm

Hi, for the passed week I noticed my Mozilla Firefox browser keeps freezing up, and the only way I can close it is to hit "Ctrl, Alt, Delete." This has been happening several times a day.

I ran my Norton Antivirus AND my VIPRE but nothing serious was found; therefore, I decided to download and run HijackThis, and I'm hoping someone can read it and tell me what, if anything needs to be removed from it!

Thank You
Shani S.

Hi Hvnly777,
Sorry for the delay.
If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:
In order to help, I do need a complete list of your installed programs.
This will do it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

Hvnly777,
We will remove the obsolete Adobe Reader and replace it later.
You also need to get rid of one of your two antivirus apps. They will battle each other for control until you do.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Adobe Reader 9.4.5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
MyPoints Toolbar 2.0

Now choose to keep ONLY ONE of these two, and UNINSTALL the other
Norton AntiVirus
VIPRE Antivirus

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HijackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: FCToolbarURLSearchHook Class - {96b985b7-3cf9-456a-9db6-791710e60f5f} - C:\Program Files\MyPoints Toolbar 2.0\Helper.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: FCTBPos00Pos - {614BDA1F-9BEF-4CD1-BDE4-FA4804929B4A} - C:\Program Files\MyPoints Toolbar 2.0\Toolbar.dll

O3 - Toolbar: MyPoints Point Finder - {89A2510A-B4B6-4683-BEC9-1B96700BC7F1} - C:\Program Files\MyPoints Toolbar 2.0\Toolbar.dll
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdate1ca2f33a999d8b0) (gupdate1ca2f33a999d8b0) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdatem) (gupdatem) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware

As you already have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer, could you please do a scan using these settings:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • After the update have been completed, select the Settings tab, then the Scanner Settings tab
  • For Action for Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), choose Show in results list and check for removal
  • Select to the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform Quick scan, then click on Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK. If Items are found, then click on Show Results
  • Check all items then click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

The log can also be found here:
    1. C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
    2. Or via the Logs tab when the application is started.

Note: MBAM may ask to reboot your computer so it can continue with the removal process, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi askey127,

After I opened MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware, I clicked on the "update" tab, then clicked on "check for updates," however, I keep getting an error message, so I cannot get the updates.

What should I do?

Hvnly777,
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download and run the tool named Rkill, which may help in allowing other programs to run.
There are five different versions. If one of them won't run, then download and try to run one of the other ones.
You only need to get ONE of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about any of these tools, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Please download Rkill from one of the following links (note the different names) and save to your Desktop:
Rkill.exe
eXplorer.exe
RKill.com
RKill.scr
Rkill.pif
  • Double-click on the Rkill or eXplorer desktop icon to run the tool.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If you get a Warning Message when you try to run it, run it again while the Warning Message is still displayed.
  • If it doesn't run on the first try, please try to run it another two or three times.
  • If it still does not run, delete the desktop entry. Then download and use the one provided in the next link.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided after trying each a few times, please let me know.
------------------------------------------------
Now see if Malwarebytes will update. Whether it will update or not, try to run the scan with it and post the log.

Also tell me which Antivirus you decided to keep.

Hvnly777,
---------------------------------------------
Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
Please Be patient. This tool removes hundreds of files and settings. It will let you know when it's done.
-------------------------------------------------
Run the ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.
You will, however, need to disable your current installed VIPRE Anti-Virus. Additional information on how to do it is shown here.
  • Please go here to run the scan.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Hi Askey127,

Well, I'm having problems with the ESET Online Scanner.

I clicked on the link you provided, and clicked on the "SCAN" button, however, it opens up a new page and asks for me to register for a Trial Download. It is NOT a FREE online scan.

What should I do?

Hvnly777,
------------------------------------------------------------
Run Microsoft Safety Scanner
Go to Microsoft Safety Scanner here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scann ... fault.aspx
Click Download Now
If you are asked about 32-bit or 64-bit, click on 32-bit.
Save it (msert.exe) to your Desktop.
Double click the icon to run it.
If you get a message saying "running this type of program could harm your computer" or similar, just ignore it and tell it to Run anyway.
Ok the license.
Click Next and choose Full Scan.
Click Next
Click Next
This scan can take a while so please be patient and let it finish.
If any malicious items are found, View the report and try to copy/paste the results back here.

Hi askey127,

Well, I completed the online scan and it said no malicious items were found.

Obviously, that's good news, right?
