Re: Some type of Malware

Unread postby melboy » June 18th, 2011, 6:47 pm

Hi and welcome to the MR forums. :)

I'm melboy and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take note of the following:

  1. I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  4. Please refrain from making any further changes to your computer (Install/Uninstall programs, delete files, edit the registry, etc...)
  5. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  6. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  7. DO NOT attach logs unless requested to. Please copy/paste all requested logs into your replies.
  8. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  9. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

NOTE: Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

IMPORTANT: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!! If you need more time, please inform me.

DDS

Please download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Link1
Link2
Link3

Temporarily disable any real-time active protection and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. A command window will appear, this is normal.

Image
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

Please copy & paste the contents of :
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
And post them in your next reply.

Re-enable any real-time protection you disabled during the running of DDS.

Re: Some type of Malware

Unread postby melboy » June 20th, 2011, 4:01 pm

Hi

Multiple Anti Virus programs.

You are operating multiple Anti Virus programs on your computer:

  • Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2
  • avast! Free Antivirus
  • McAfee VirusScan

It is NOT safe to have more than one anti-virus installed on a system, and that doing so not only does not provide better protection, it will actually cause additional problems. Anti-virus programs patch into the system kernel. Having more than one anti-virus patching into the system kernel will not only destabilize a system, it can corrupt system files and it WILL cause crashes! You MUST remove all but one anti-virus program.

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):
Authentium AntiVirus SDK - 2
McAfee Security Scan Plus
McAfee SecurityCenter
McAfee VirusScan

  • Download the removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/lic ... s/MCPR.exe.
  • Click Save, and save the file (MCPR.exe) to your desktop
  • Ensure that all McAfee windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.
  • Reboot your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.

Fix HijackThis entries

Re: Some type of Malware

Unread postby steveo4025 » June 21st, 2011, 12:08 am

Okay Melboy, once again thank you so very much for your help with this thing!! One quick note; after I deleted the things you said to with HiJack This and then re-booted, I ran HiJack This again and the same things popped up that I deleted. Anyways, I left them alone this time and did the rest of the things you told me to. Here are the logs that you requested. I will be anxiously awaiting your reply once again!! Thank you so very much for your volunteer help, it is greatly appreciated!!

Hi

It's Spybot that's interfering with the fixes, we'll uninstall it as it's outdated anyway. You can re-install the new version when we've finished if you'd like.

Are the redirects still occurring?

Update Adobe Reader

Your Adobe Reader is out of date.
Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

  • Uninstall via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
    Adobe Reader X (10.0.1)

Please visit the Adobe Site & download & install Adobe Reader X (10.1).

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Oracle's Java (Was Sun Java) is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Oracle Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 26.

  • Go to Oracle Java
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Platform, Standard Edition. Java SE 6 Update 26"
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement
  • In the list of files, Look to Windows x86 Offline & click on the link to the right which says "jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Uninstall Programs

  • click on start
  • Click on control panel
  • Double click the icon add/remove programs
  • click on the first program in the list and click Remove
  • Continue through the list below (one at a time) until all programs have been removed.
  • If something isn't found, please continue with the next entry in the list.

Unread postby steveo4025 » June 21st, 2011, 11:59 am

Hey Melboy, here is the dds log you requested. I followed all of your steps listed above except for one part. There was no entry in the Remove program menu for RadialPoint Security Services. Other than that, I did everything as instructed. Once again, thank you for your time and help, and I will be awaiting your reply !!

Hi

Well done, that's starting to look better. You didn't answer my question though. ;)

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.(System registry & Current user registry)
  • Click on OK
  • When the Question pop-up appears click on Yes to create the folder.
  • After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! popup will appear
  • Now click on OK. A backup has been created.

OTM

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Paste the following code under the Image area. Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Services
    dvpapi
    RPSUpdaterR
    Radialpoint Security Services

    [Reboot]

  • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Push the large Image button.
  • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. Copy/paste the contents of that report back here in your next reply.

Hey again Melboy. I am so sorry about the question you asked. The searches are still being redirected, but I could search like 2 or 3 times normally and then they would get redirected to something like "find-quick-results". Here is the log you requested. Again, thank you ever so much for your help; let's kick this things' butt!

Hi

Can you describe the re-directions - Where are your searches re-directed to? Is it one particular site? Is it many different sites? Is it just your Google searches that are re-directed, or do you find that random sites are opening in your web browser?

Is your ISP Frontier Communications?

TFC

You should still have this on your desktop,

  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

  • Please go here to run the scan.
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed make sure you first copy the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
  • Now click on: Image (Selecting Uninstall application on close if you so wish)
  • Re-enable your anti-virus software.

Melboy, I cannot get the eset program to run. It says it cannot get update and asks if the proxy is configured. As far as the searches go, it only redirects my google searches. I can google something and the results appear; but as soon as I click on one of the provided links, I am redirected to "find-quick-results and then usually to yellowpages.com or something like that.
