Google searches being redirected to ads

Unread postby Max Power » June 11th, 2011, 6:23 pm

Hi, My google searches are being redirected to ads. Also my toolbar changed colour and there was a partially visible new icon underneath the windows flag. I ran windows spyware removal and it identified a trojan:Dos/Alureon.A which it partially removed. It also removed Rogue:win32/fake cog. It corrected my toolbar but the google searches are still being redirected.
Here is my DDS log and attached log:
Thanks

Hello Max Power,

Welcome to the forum!

My name is pgmigg and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.

Currently I am working under the guidance of the MRU teachers and everything I post to you, must first be approved by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses, but I will post back with instructions for you as soon as possible.

Before we begin, please read and follow these important guidelines, so things will proceed smoothly.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. You must have Administrator rights, permissions for this computer.
  3. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  4. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  5. Only post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  6. Print each set of instructions if possible - your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Only reply to this thread, do not start another one. Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions. In the meantime...
Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please read all instructions carefully before executing and perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Re: Google searches being redirected to ads

Unread postby pgmigg » June 15th, 2011, 3:57 pm

Hello Max Power,

Thank you for your patience... :)
I ran windows spyware removal and it identified a trojan:Dos/Alureon.A which it partially removed. It also removed Rogue:win32/fake cog.

Could you please count what 'windows spyware removal' tool[s] you run and which one reported about Dos/Alureon.A?

Step 1.
TDSSKiller

Please download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your Desktop.
  1. Right click on TDSSKiller.exe and select "Run as administrator..."to run it.
  2. Click on Start Scan, the scan will run.
  3. When the scan has finished, if it finds anything please click on the drop down arrow next to Cure and select Skip
  4. Now click on Report to open the log file created by TDSSKiller in your root directory C:\
  5. To find the log go to Start > Computer > C and look for :TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt
  6. Post the contents of that log in your next reply please.
  7. DO NOT TRY TO FIX ANYTHING AT THIS POINT

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Answer for my question.
  2. Do you have any problems executing the instructions?
  3. Contents of TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt
  4. Do you see any changes in computer behavior?

Thanks,
pgmigg

Hi, I think this is the spyware tool that I used from microsoft. I ran the
program once. Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830). The google searches are still
being redirected to ads. The toolbar sometimes still has a partial "A" icon underneath the windows flag when I restart the computer. Other times when I restart the toolbar looks normal.

Here is the report from TDSS:

Hello Max Power,

Thank you for quick response... ;)

Infected MBR Warning

Unfortunately your computer has an infected (MBR) Master Boot Record.
The (Master Boot Record) tells your computer what to do when it starts up. Without that information, the computer won't start.
We can try to replace your MBR with a standard one but it is not without risk!
If something goes wrong when we try to remove the infection, it could leave you with a computer that won't start.
This only happens occasionally but it does happen...

A couple of questions before we begin:
  1. Did you install Windows yourself and if so do you have a Windows Vista installation disk? Or...
  2. Did Windows come pre-installed on the machine?
If so you would have been prompted to make a set of Recovery Disks. Do you have those?
Due to the nature of the main infection, if Windows was pre-installed you may no longer have access to the Recovery Partition.

If you understand the possible risk involved and would like to attempt to fix this infection, I would urge you first to ensure you have backed up any important data.

Please let me know what you decide to do.

Thanks,
pgmigg

Hi Max Power.
pgmigg is unavailable right now, so it it's ok with yourself i will take over for him.
Please do the the following then give me an update on your computers performance.

Download MBRBackup to your Desktop.

  • Right-click MBRBackup.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Click SaveMBR (top left corner) and save the backup file to your Desktop.
  • It will have a name similar to MBR_2010-10-06.bin where the numbers correspond to the date the backup was made.
  • Exit the program.
  • I strongly suggest you keep a copy of this backup stored on an external device.

Next.

  • First go to Start > Computer > C: and delete the TDSSKiller log that was created there.
  • Next right click on TDSSKiller.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Click on Start Scan, the scan will run.
  • When the scan has finished Ensure Cure ( the default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now.
