Hand-Me-Down Laptop Infected *Almost Clean*

Unread postby Spawn » June 11th, 2011, 1:50 pm

I got this laptop from my older brother when he moved away. But it was crawling with viruses, I don't wanna know what he did with it. I have been trying for a while now to clean it. I downloaded many anti-virus programs and ran them all. I then uninstalled everything. Then I went through every folder on the computer and deleted everything. I also ran CCleaner. I have left Ad-Aware and Kaspersky, Ad-Aware could not find the last few viruses and Kaspersky was only a trial and so would not delete them. There were about 6 problem viruses left. So I looked for each one manually and deleted them. I have only a few problems left:

Links (especially all from Google) redirect to spam sites.

I cannot download any programs, they stop as soon as they start. If I restart them they download (some progress, before they wouldn't even do that) but vanish when they finish.

Opera has similar problems, IE8 just redirects all websites to 'http:///' and "address not valid".

On startup I get two error messages:
The first:
Windows cannot find 'C:\DOCUME-1\Hawk\LOCALS-1\Temp\csrss.exe'. Make sure you types the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

And when I cancel it I get another:
Could not load or run 'C:\DOCUME-1\Hawk\LOCALS-1\Temp\csrss.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry.

I had a third but I guess the registry cleaning on CCleaner took care of it, I wonder why it didn't fix this one.
It's searching for csrss.exe the file that Kaspersky told me was infected and that I deleted.

This probably means some other program is searching for it. Task Manager shows some strange programs (I don't recognize any and they have random letters for names) that I cannot stop or delete.

Hi Spawn,

multiple Anti Virus programs

  • It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
    Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! Anti-Virus
    Kaspersky Anti-Virus
  • Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
  • Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.
  • Please remove one of them. then reboot

CKScanner

  • Please download CKScanner from here to your Desktop.
  • Make sure that CKScanner.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double-click on CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved
  • Double-click on the CKFiles.txt icon on your Desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Next

  • Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  • Double click on MGADiag.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.

Download and run OTL
Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with OTL.txt and Extras.txt from the OTL scan into your next reply.

Hello deltalima,

The error messages are all gone.
Malwarebytes is amazing though. None of the other scanners found any more malware. MBAM found 9!

Internet Explorer works again. But Firefox and now Internet Explorer both have the same problems. Links redirect to spam and I can't download anything. But everything else seems fine.

Should I uninstall FF and reinstall? Since both are doing it it doesn't seem like its a browser problem though.

Hi Spawn,

Should I uninstall FF and reinstall? Since both are doing it it doesn't seem like its a browser problem though.

No, don't uninstall FF. The computer is still not clean, we need to go further.

Run Combofix

Temporarily disable any antispyware, antivirus and or antimalware real-time protection as they may interfere with running of ComboFix.

Download ComboFix from here to your Desktop.

For more information about Combofix please see here.

Close all programs.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it’s malware removal procedures, if not, then follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. Once installed, you should see the following message:

The recovery console was successfuly installed.
Click ‘YES’ to continue scanning for malware
Click ‘NO’ for exit

Click the YES button.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your “drive access” light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

When finished ComboFix will produce a log file. Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

Hi Spawn,

task manager still show tons of strange programs running

Lets's see what those programs are.

  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, a Notepad file will open.

Please post the contents of the Notepad file in your next reply.

TDSSKiller

  • Please Download TDSSKiller.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your Desktop.
  • Double-click the TDSSKiller Folder on your desktop.
  • Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe and click Copy then Paste it directly on to your Desktop.
  • Important!: Run this fix once and once only.
  • Double click the TDSSKiller icon on you're desktop then click Start scan.
  • A box will appear saying System scan completed.
  • If any Malicious objects are found click Cure > Continue > Reboot now.
  • A log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0 24.07.2010.
  • To find the log click Start > Computer > C:.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Hi Spawn,

Firefox and now Internet Explorer both have the same problems. Links redirect to spam and I can't download anything

Do you still have the problem with Firefox and Internet Explorer?

Are you connected to the Internet via a router?

Do any other computers in your house have the same issue?

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.
