Hi dreslick :

Optional Fix

This is a optional fix, please read the information carefully. If you are happy to uninstall Wild Tangent, please follow the instructions below.
I see you are using Wild Tangent. It is not malware, but is sometimes thought to bring malware along. Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although it is not technically considered spyware, it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including:
  • Operating System Version
  • CPU Type and Speed
  • Memory Amount Video Card type and Driver Version
  • Sound Card type and Driver Version
  • DirectX Version Location that the Web Driver was installed from
  • It is also a MAJOR resource hog.
For more information, see WildTangent Removal Instructions and Help.

Unless you are an extremely avid games player, I recommend you uninstall Wild Tangent:

To uninstall Wild Tangent:
  • Click on Start.
  • All programs.
  • Accessories.
  • Run.
  • In the open text box copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.

Re: Computer continues to download malware

Unread postby torreattack » June 19th, 2011, 7:56 am

Hi dreslick :

I removed WildTangent from the computer.

Smart choice!

I have so far had no additional problems with malware.

Good news.

Thanks for your time!

My pleasure.

Let's continue with some more steps.

Clear Java cache
  • Click on Start > Control Panel > Programsthen double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button.
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked.
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
  • Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

next,

Please download HostsXpert and unzip it to your desktop,
  • Right click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the programme.
  • When prompted with:
HOSTS file does not exist, press OK to create HOSTS file, Cancel to quit.
  • Select OK.
  • Check to see if top button on left hand side says Make Writable?
    • If it does. click on it then proceed to next instruction.
    • If not, just proceed to next instruction
  • Click on Restore MS Hosts File to restore your Hosts file to its default condition
  • When prompted to confirm, click OK.
  • Click on the Download button (lower left hand side)
    • Click on MVPs Hosts... button.
    • Click on Replace button.
    • Press OK in the box that pops up. (HostsXpert will now download and update your Hosts file)
  • When finished.
    • Click on File Handling button.
    • Click on Make Read Only? to secure it against infection.
  • Exit the programme.

Checklist
Please restart your computer and post:
  • An update on your computer performance

hi dreslick:

These first line is ok because it will be clean up from computer during our "cleanup" processes.

However, do you know what that "Quarantine" folder is?

Command Line List files in Folder
I would like to see what files are in a folder... please follow these steps:
  1. Press the Start button ...then press Run.
If you do not have the RUN command on your Windows 7 Start Menu:
    • Click the Start Search box on the Start Menu.
  2. Copy/paste the following command into the text entry box.
    cmd /c dir "C:\Quarantine" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\list.txt"
  3. Press the "OK"...button
  4. A file called "list.txt" will appear on your Desktop. The command window will eventually close.
  5. Double click on this file... Notepad or Wordpad should open.
Please copy/paste the contents of the list.txt file...in your next reply.

Thanks,

Re: Computer continues to download malware

Unread postby dreslick » June 19th, 2011, 12:50 pm

I think this is a folder I made when I first started to clean the PC -- before I realized I needed help. I wasn't sure what Defender was and so didn't want to delete it without first making sure it was not needed. Sorry about the confusion: Here is the information you wanted.

Volume in drive C is TI102805W0E
Volume Serial Number is C044-9A7C

Directory of C:\Quarantine

06/17/2011 10:12 PM <DIR> .
06/17/2011 10:12 PM <DIR> ..
0 File(s) 0 bytes
2 Dir(s) 262,298,976,256 bytes free

Hi dreslick :

I think this is a folder I made when I first started to clean the PC -- before I realized I needed help.

If you have great interest in cleaning computer and willing to help others, you should apply to become a student in Malware Removal University.

This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware.

Congratulations... your computer now appears to be malware free! :)
Please follow these simple guidelines in order to help keep your computer more secure:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click on Start > All programs > Accessories > Run.
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the box and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
    Image
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Clean up with OTM
  • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  • This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTM main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

You can now delete any tools we used if they remain on your Desktop.

Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

Update your Antivirus programs and other programs regularly.
Secunia Software Inspector - Copyright © Secunia. F-secure Health Check - Copyright © F-Secure Corporation.

Visit Microsoft often.
Keep on top of critical updates , as well as other updates for your computer.

Install additional (free) programs, that can help improve security.
Many feel that having a "layered" protection scheme is beneficial, you'll have to decide what works best for your situation.
Here are a few you can look into, if you want.

WinPatrol
Do not install if you have installed Spybot Search & Destroy and enabled Teatimer protection. System conflicts can occur.
Download it from Copyright © BillP Studios
Information about how WinPatrol works, is available Here
(The free version of WinPatrol... provides limited real-time protection)

SiteAdvisor
SiteAdvisor is a toolbar for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox which alerts you if you're about to enter a potentially dangerous website.
You can find more information and download it from Here

No 3rd Party Firewall
Looking over your log, I don't see any evidence of a third party firewall installed. If you have one installed, let me know.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access from the outside world.

Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders.
If you do not have a firewall installed...
I strongly recommend you download a free (for personal use) firewall NOW that monitors traffic in
both directions... from one of these excellent vendors:
  1. Comodo (Is now bundled with AV software, toolbar and search provider. Opt to install only the firewall software... uncheck the rest)
  2. Online Armor Free (Free version at bottom of page (XP/Vista/W7 (32bit).) 64bit version not available yet. Some reported conflicts with Avira AntiVir.
  3. ZoneAlarm (uncheck ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker during installation if you choose this one)
  4. Ashampoo
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a very basic firewall. This (XP) firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to install and have active, only one firewall at the same time. If you install one of these firewalls, remember to turn off Windows' firewall.
