Having trouble getting rid of this, could someone look at my hijack log and identify what I need to delete. Also would appreciate a general look at the entire log as the computer has been running a tad slow lately, especially, what is this little puppy:

O18 - Protocol hijack: flowto - {C7101FB0-28FB-11D5-883A-204C4F4F5021}

mgauss,
That "puppy" is usually part of the software for online investing or online banking.
That entry looks like the file "Flowhook.dll" that usually acccompanies it may have been removed.
Anyway, nothing serious on the surface.

Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

Michael,
The one thing I really want to get rid of is Key Mouse Genie. I ran the "normal" uninstaller on them and no luck.

I know, but I need to get your machine into an orderly updated condition first.
Just humor me, and we will get to the "Genie".

Please don't scan, remove, or install anything unless I ask, until we are through cleaning.
Please do everything, one at a time, in the order given.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HijackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A3BC75A2-1F87-4686-AA43-5347D756017C} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0015-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_15) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0016-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_16) -
O18 - Protocol hijack: flowto - {C7101FB0-28FB-11D5-883A-204C4F4F5021}

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------
Download Antivir Free
This program is free for personal, non-business use.
Download AntiVir Free from here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml
Click the Download button. Then when the "Download Locations" page comes up, choose the first External Mirror (exe)
Save the Installer to your desktop, but don't run it yet. The installer file will be named avira_antivir_personal_en.exe
Double check to be sure you know where to find it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Adobe Reader 9.4.1
AVG 2011
BitTorrent
<== this will get your computer infected
EasyCleaner
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
<== this will get your computer infected
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Search Assist
ZoneAlarm

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------
Install Antivir
Right Click the Avira Antivir Installer you saved on your desktop, choose "Run as administrator", and let it Install Antivir.
-----------------------------------------------
Update and Scan with Antivir
Right click the red umbrella icon and choose Start Antivir.
When the window comes up click Start Update.
When the update is complete, click on Scan System Now.
This full scan could take a hour or more.
It will ask what to do with any item it finds.
IMPORTANT >> tell it to DELETE or QUARANTINE any items it finds.
-----------------------------------------------
Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
There wil be reports titled Update and reports titled Scan. Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display Report.
The report contents will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.

Let me know how it goes.
We will be looking for the log from Avira Antivir.

Ok, scan took two hours but I am in Kentucky, everything here is a bit slower than elsewhere.

Really didn't want to remove Zonealarm as I have used it for years, but it's gone. Sigh.

One other thing I forgot - installed gchat yesterday. I know, I'm in violation of the rules. Sorry.

mgauss,
Please don't download anything else or scan, remove, etc.
It makes it harder to find out what's going on.
(this isn't easy to begin with).

------------------------------------------------------
You have had a Keylogger trojan which is designed to steal passwords. Avira found it. AVG was taking a snooze.
Warning - Compromised Data
Because the infection has had remote control access to your Internet activities, you should assume that any data on the machine may have been stolen.
Take whatever precautions you think sensible about any financial (credit cards, banking, etc.), or other critical information that has been passed through or stored on the machine.
I would suggest changing all account names/numbers, and passwords for ANY accounts that have been used with the machine.
That includes not only banking, credit cards, and financial, but also website and e-mail accounts as well.
Don't use the (possibly still) infected machine to make the changes.
---------------------------------------------
Please download and run this tool to get rid of the entire AVG set of files and settings
http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools
---------------------------------------------
Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :reg
    [HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] /s

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

mgauss,
You have one more thing to do.
The Firefox preferences were not removed as they should have been.
You really need to get rid of the present preferences, or adware and worse may be in your future.
Copy this and print it or something, so you can exit Firefox before running it.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode this way.

From Start, Run type "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -safe-mode
The "Firefox Safe Mode" window will appear with some troubleshooting options.
Select the option "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults."
Click the button, Make Changes and Restart.

Please try, and let me know if you are able to do this.

I did as requested, then reset the homepage to cnn.com and reset Ghostery options to block all web bugs.

The only change I could find was the removal of:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe

mgauss,
---------------------------------------------
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *genie*

    :folderfind
    *genie*

    :regfind
    Genie

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The new log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
---------------------------------------------
Run a Scan with OTL
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • You can also download OTL from HERE
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, In the Standard Registry box, click All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location
as OTL (should be on your desktop).
    • Make sure Notepad's Format, Wordwrap is unchecked.
    • Please copy the contents of each of these files, one at a time, and post them in your next reply.
(Note: the file Extras.txt will only show up the VERY first time you run OTL).
  • Use separate replies if you wish.
