Unread postby GeniusMagic » June 2nd, 2011, 9:32 am

Hi - I have been expericening a number of virus warnings and scans that start automatially . I have tried running DDS san, it starts and seems to complete but the logs never pop up and the blank screen remains open.
I was able to run hijack this and that generated the log that is pasted below. I would appreciate if someone could take a look and advise . In addition a couple of keys on this laptop have sudenly stopped working about the same time these malicious warnings started to appear.

Hi GeniusMagic and welcome to Malware Removal :)

My name is torreattack, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

I am currently working under the guidance of the MRU teachers, everything I post to you, will need to be reviewed by them.
This additional review process can add some extra time to my responses, but hopefully not too much.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Read

please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

  • If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions.

Thank you for your patience.

Hi GeniusMagic :

Vista Advice
Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the program file & selecting: Run as Administrator.
Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program.
When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Create a System Restore Point (Vista)
  1. Right-click on Computer ... select Properties.
  2. In the left pane under Tasks ... click System protection.
If UAC prompts for an administrator password or approval, type the password or give your "permission to continue".
  3. Select System Protection ...then choose Create.
  4. In the System Restore dialog box, type Before FIX for the restore point ... click Create, again.
A window will pop up with "The Restore Point was created successfully" confirmation message.
  5. Click OK ...then close the System Restore dialog.
Unless you use some other method to create system restore points...
Please leave the System Restore function "turned on" until we are finished and I give you the 'all clean' sign.

If you have successfully created a System Restore Point...we can proceed.
If you have NOT successfully created a System Restore Point...do not go any further!
Please post back so we can determine why it was unsuccessful.

1. Are you running combofix in your computer before this? Why?

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please post the ComboFix log. You should be able to find it at C:\ComboFix.txt

If you are unable to find the log there, please check for logs in the folder C:\qoobox

3. Create an Uninstall List
Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press the Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Checklist
Please post:
  • combofix log
  • NEW hijackthis log
  • Uninstall list

Thanks,

Thanks for your reply

1. I was able to successfuly create a system restore point per your instructions

2. Yes I have installed and previously tried running ComboFix. However it starts but never goes byond "Scanning for infected files " stage. After that it just does not do anything and freezes my system. There is no hard disk activity and it does not seem to be making any progress. Eventually I have to manually shut down and restart my computer - I have tried to run this in safe mode too many times but was never able to complete and the blue screen does not go away

3. NEW hijackthis log

Re: numerous malware warnings,

Unread postby torreattack » June 11th, 2011, 6:18 pm

Hi GeniusMagic :

I want to draw your attention to the following quote.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Failure to post replies within 3 days will result in this thread being closed

The reason of these quotes are: by running other tools or install any softwares during the cleaning process may provoke the malware and complicated the matter.
Beside that, combofix is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

I want to remind you also the 3 days rules. I almost closed the thread because it almost reaches the time limit.

I saw you are running Citrix Presentation Server. Is this a business/company computer?

Thanks,

Sorry - it took me some time to reply back as I did not get a chance over the weekdays to run the scans. I had to try running it multiple times as it would start but never complete and I had to manually reboot the server everytime.

I am not aware of Citrix server and I am not using it. This is my personal laptop

1. Do you connect to a server when starting the computer?
2. Is it a thin-client computer that you are running now?
3. Can you provide more info regarding the SERVER?

Thanks,

I am sorry , that was a mistake on my part.I did not mean to call it a Server. I meant I had to restart the "computer" everytime because it froze.

There is no server involved here, its a regular personal laptop. Apologies for the confusion.

No problem. :)

Before we continue, let's create another system restore point because the registry might changes since we create the first one.

Create a System Restore Point (Vista)
  1. Right-click on Computer ... select Properties.
  2. In the left pane under Tasks ... click System protection.
If UAC prompts for an administrator password or approval, type the password or give your "permission to continue".
  3. Select System Protection ...then choose Create.
  4. In the System Restore dialog box, type Before FIX 2 for the restore point ... click Create, again.

Now, let's start to hunt!

Download/run Rkill:
Please download rkill/iExplore.exe and save to your Desktop:
  • Right-click on iExplore.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • When finished, Notepad will open with a log called, "rkill.log".
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the rkill.log in your next reply.
  • The file is automatically saved... located at C:\rkill.log.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

I saw you had running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Retrieve Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) Log(s)
There is a need to see a scan log from a previous run of MBAM, please do the following:
  1. Start MBAM... click the Logs tab at the top.
The log will be named by the date & time of scan in the following format: mbam-log-yyyy-mm-dd (time).txt
If you have had multiple runs of MBAM, there may be several logs showing in the list.
  2. Click on the last (most recent) log name to highlight it... then click the Open button, at bottom left. The log should open in Notepad as a text file.
  3. Please copy and paste the entire mbam-log-yyyy-mm-dd (time).txt file in your next reply.
Be sure to post the complete log... including the top portion showing MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  4. Exit MBAM when done.

next,

Please re-run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan.

re-run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware with Full Scan
if your Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is still running, go ahead to step 2.

  1. Please start MBAM (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) again.
You must be connected to the Internet to obtain any updates.
  2. Press the Update tab.. then press the Check for Updates...button. <<---Important!
Once any updates are installed or you get the message that you are up-to-date
  3. Press the Scanner tab...
  4. Select FULL SCAN this time... then press the Scan...button. This scan will take a while, so please be patient.
    When the scan finishes...
  5. Check all items except any items (if present) in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
  6. Let MBAM remove what it can... if there are files to be deleted on reboot... please reboot the machine so MBAM can finish the removal.
If you rebooted, then you'll need to start MBAM again.
  7. Press the LOG... tab. Locate the most current log file.
Please copy and paste the most recent log (from this new run) in your next reply.

TDSSKiller - Rootkit Removal Tool
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  1. Right-click TDSSKiller.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. fziapevq.com).
If you don't see file extensions, please see: How to change the file extension.
  2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

OTL
Please download OTL ... by Old Timer . Save it to your Desktop.
  1. Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  3. Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
Leave the remaining selections to the default settings.
  4. Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  5. When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened, maximized
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized on task bar.
  6. Please post the contents of both OTListIt.txt and Extras.txt files in your next reply.

Checklist
Please restart your computer and post:
  • Rkill log
  • both mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt
  • both OTL log
  • An update on your problems
