williemi,
The Kaspersky problem is nothing to be concerned about.
It often has difficulty running.

Do you use the GemPlus Smart Card Reader?
------------------------------------------------------------
Please run a full scan with Norton and let it remove anything it finds.
------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it shows any malware items, Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2011-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
.
-----------------------------------------------
Please download MiniToolBox and run it.
Check ONLY the following in the list:
  • Flush DNS
Click GO and post the result (Result.txt).
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
---------------------------------------------------
So, In Your Reply, we will be looking for the following :
The contents of:
  • the Malwarebytes log
  • the message from MiniToolbox
  • checkhd.txt from the disk check
  • comments about the Norton scan and Gem Plus
Please feel free to use separate replies.

1) I dont use the card reader (I think it's something my spouse uses on his computer, that he used on mine one time)

2) Norton ran fine; the only risk it detected was tracking cookies (and says it resolved those)

3) MiniToolBox:

4) Malwarebytes log below (it did not find anything). However, I had also run it yesterday and it found (& I removed) Files Infected:
c:\documents and settings\Emily\application data\google talk\googletalk.exe (Trojan.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

today's run:

williemi,
I think your machine looks OK.
That MiniToolbox process removed any "memorized" Google redirects.

If it's running well, please do as follows to remove all our extra tools:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Start OTL (Right click and Run As ADministrator)
Click the button labeled Clean Up

You should be good to go.
