Hotmail spamming my address book

Unread postby kuboa » April 27th, 2011, 10:10 am

I recently developed the problem of my e-mail (Hotmail) spamming friends with offers for beach property deals.

I note that I have Spybot Search & Destroy with TeaTimer active, MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and also Avira Anti-Virus. I have updated them all and run scans since the problem began (beyond the regularly scheduled scans), *mostly* to no avail, but MB Anti-Malware did find this:

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\control panel\Homepage (PUM.Hijack.HomePageControl) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

Meanwhile, I noticed that when I clicked "Select All" to inform my friends I was aware of the problem, I had several contacts that I never added, to wit: CamBooty, DrunkGirlRoom, TipsyChick, and HornyGirlHere. I have not found those words anywhere in registry or file system searches.

I am ashamed to admit that my downloading antics got me a rootkit infection recently, but I opened a downloaded file after getting help.

Because of that experience, I already have a number of programs recommended or requested by MalwareRemoval staff, which is why I am able to post the results of DDR.scr in this post (see below).

Thank you,

~Kuboa

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

GMER

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow .sys driver to load, please consent.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All << (don't miss this one)
    See image below, Click the image to enlarge it
    Image

  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

If GMER crashes, then restart your computer and try again, this time also uncheck Devices. You can also try the scan in safe mode if necessary. You might want to save these instructions with notepad or print them because there's no internet in safe mode:

  • Restart your computer
  • During startup, but before the Windows logo appears, tap the F5/F8 key continually or hold down the Shift key;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • When asked to proceed to safe mode, click Yes.
  • Make sure Trend Micro Antivirus is disabled, then follow the GMER instructions.
  • When finished reboot the computer.

Next, Scan again with DDS and post a fresh set of logs for my review.

=======================================

Please include the following logs in your next reply (post all logs as text, no attachments please):
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • gmer.txt

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
