Redirect Virus

Unread postby kyfeez » April 16th, 2011, 9:53 pm

I recently acquired the Redirect virus somehow. Whenever I click on a link from a search engine it takes me to a different web page entirely. They usually are just advertisements. I used Housecall and deleted to virus, but through research found that most of the time normal virus scans wont fix it. I eventually found this forum and would really appreciate the help. I already did Hijack this and will post the log below. Thanks

Re: Redirect Virus

Unread postby deltalima » April 17th, 2011, 4:17 pm

Hi kyfeez,

Welcome to the forum.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please do not run any scans or make any changes to the system unless I ask you too.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the program file and selecting: Run as Administrator.
Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program.
When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Remove P2P Programs

  • I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    FrostWire

  • Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
  • Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

  • Click on start
  • Then Run
  • In the open text entry box please copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click enter.
  • Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the programs listed above (in red) and any other P2P you have installed NOW.
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Upload a File to Virustotal

Please go to Virustotal

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\Users\Kyle\AppData\Roaming\softkbd3.dll

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Download and run OTL
Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click on OTL.exe and select: Run as Administrator.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Right click the .exe file and select: Run as Administrator.. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
    Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with OTL.txt and Extras.txt from the OTL scan into your next reply.

The posts were doing something weird and posted my reply twice. So read this one and skip the next one because they are the same thing..Couple things I thought I should mention. I could not select to run the programs as "administrator". The option wasn't available but I am the only user for this computer so I am the adminstrator. I don't know if this matters but I was able to select all of the same options for the scans without doing it as an administrator.

< End of report>

I followed every direction you gave me and doubled check to make sure I did. After GMER was done scanning a message came up that said "There were no modifications found to your system" There is no report for me to copy and paste in here. Did I do something wrong? Thanks for the help so far

Re: Redirect Virus

Unread postby kyfeez » April 17th, 2011, 7:04 pm

Couple things I thought I should mention. I could not select to run the programs as "administrator". The option wasn't available but I am the only user for this computer so I am the adminstrator. I don't know if this matters but I was able to select all of the same options for the scans without doing it as an administrator.

Here are my results for OTL

7.00 Gb Paging File | 5.00 Gb Available in Paging File | 70.00% Paging File free

< End of report>

I followed every direction you gave me and doubled check to make sure I did. After GMER was done scanning a message came up that said "There were no modifications found to your system" There is no report for me to copy and paste in here. Did I do something wrong?

Hi kyfeez,

PRC - C:\Users\Kyle\Downloads\OTL.exe

Please follow the instructions exactly, I asked for OTL to be downloaded to the desktop and not the downloads folder, this could be important with some of the tools we will use.

PRC - C:\Program Files (x86)\FrostWire\FrostWire.exe

Did you uninstall Frostwire? If so please reboot before continuing, if not then please uninstall now.

Security Check
Please download Security Check ... by screen317. Save it to your desktop.
Alternate download site: Link 2
  1. Double click the SecurityCheck.exe icon to begin.
  2. Press the Space Bar when you see the "press any key to continue..." message.
    A Notepad results file will open automatically called checkup.txt
  3. Save "checkup.txt" to your desktop. (This output file is NOT automatically saved!)
  4. Please copy/paste the entire contents of the checkup.txt file into your next reply.

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Ok. I figured out how to download stuff to my desktop. It makes me download it into downloads folder. I don't have a choice but then I have to find it and send it to the desktop. I use Windows 7 and the option to save to the desktop isn't there. I uninstalled Frostwire the first time but I rebooted so it should be gone now. Here are my results from Security Check.

Results of screen317's Security Check version 0.99.10
Windows 7 (UAC is enabled)
Internet Explorer 8
``````````````````````````````
Antivirus/Firewall Check:
Windows Firewall Enabled!
WMI entry may not exist for antivirus; attempting automatic update.
Anti-malware/Other Utilities Check:
Java(TM) 6 Update 14
Out of date Java installed!
Adobe Flash Player 10.1.53.64
Adobe Reader X (10.0.1)
Mozilla Firefox (3.6.16) Firefox Out of Date!
````````````````````````````````
Process Check:

I downloaded Rootkit unhooker and tried to run it but an error message came up that said. "Error loading driver, NTSTATUS code: 0xC000036B"

I tried to download it a couple different times but that message popped up everytime. I was not able to run the program.

Hi kyfeez,

No Anti-virus Software Installed!
Looking over your log ... there is NO evidence of anti-virus software installed.. This puts you at serious risk.
Anti-virus software will help detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories.

To protect your computer from infection...download a (free for personal use) anti-virus program from one these reliable vendors.

  1. Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Superior detection, the "free" version has no email scan.
  2. avast! Free Antivirus - Excellent detection, the freeware version includes email scanning.
  3. Microsoft Security Essentials ** - New, from Microsoft, with email scanning, easy to install, easy to use.
    ** Your PC must run genuine Windows to install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Installing a new AV product.
Do NOT unistall any existing anti-virus product yet!
  1. Download the new Anti-virus product to your computer.
  2. Save any work. Close all applications, especially your Internet connection.
  3. Uninstall any existing anti-virus product... Use the AV uninstall option if available.
  4. Reboot your computer, if not done during the uninstall.
  5. Install the new AV product... following installation instructions.
  6. Check for updates to the new AV product, if not done during install setup.
  7. Run a full scan of your computer.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time.
Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Please post the log from the scan in your next reply.

I ran the Avast full system scan and it found 1 threat. I couldn't copy and paste the log so I will just type it.

File name: C:\Users\Kyle\AppData\Local\Temp\1f3ef412.exe
Severity: High
Status: Threat: Win32:Pirminay-H [Trj]
It also gave me the option of deleting the threat from Avast.

Hi kyfeez,

It also gave me the option of deleting the threat from Avast.

Please run Avast again and choose to remove that file.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

TFC

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.22.3 log created on 04192011_155450

Files\Folders moved on Reboot...
C:\Users\Kyle\AppData\Local\Temp\FXSAPIDebugLogFile.txt moved successfully.
File move failed. C:\windows\temp\_avast_\Webshlock.txt scheduled to be moved on reboot.

Registry entries deleted on Reboot...

I followed the directions exactly how you told me to and there was no file at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
I even ran the online scan twice to make sure and still there was no log file. The computer is running good now. Links do not redirect me to a different website. They actually work! Thank you so much for the help. I really appreciate it.

Hi kyfeez,

Now that you are clean, please follow these steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, & also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 24.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Here
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 24 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue.The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs & remove all older versions of Java
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u24-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version

Remove GMER

Delete the GMER icon from your desktop.

Clean up with OTL

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program. This will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Happy surfing and stay clean!
