Cannot change HOSTS File or Fix using HijackThis

Unread postby jkpenfold » April 10th, 2011, 7:45 am

I've found that the hosts file has been edited and I am unable to change it.
I've tried renaming it, using the hosts-perm bat file, running the laptop in Safe Mode and as the administrator, however when I change it, it just comes back the same when I reboot.

On HijackThis I can see the errors, but when I fix them, nothing happens and if I run the scan again the errors are still there.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is my DDS & HijackThis, I hope this is what you need.

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
This may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Backup your data - XP
Backup your data - Vista
Backup your data - windows 7

Please post an Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Unread postby Cypher » April 10th, 2011, 11:44 am

Hi jkpenfold.
Ok continue with the instructions below then give me an update on how your computer is performing.

Please download HostsXpert and unzip it to your desktop, Do not run it yet.

Next.

Back Up registry with ERUNT

  • Please download ERUNT and save it to your desktop.
  • Alternate Download
  • Double-click on erunt_setup.exe to install the program
  • Untick the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  • Click No when you get the option to run Erunt at Windows startup.
  • During the installation, tick Launch Erunt.
  • Accept the default options for running a backup.
  • Erunt will then backup your registry.
  • Click OK to finish.
  • If you are unable to back up your Registry with ERUNT ....
    • Let me know.
    • Do not follow any further instructions until I tell you to.

Next.

Download and run OTM

Download OTM.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
  • Right-click then copy the following code, Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
    "Start Page"="http://www.msn.com"
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]
    "ProxyServer"=-

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [EmptyFlash]
    [emptytemp]
    [ClearAllRestorePoints]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right-click then paste the code into the blank box below Image
    • Next click on the large Image button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

  • When prompted with:
HOSTS file does not exist, press OK to create HOSTS file, Cancel to quit.
  • Select OK.
  • Check to see if top button on left hand side says Make Writable?

Re: Cannot change HOSTS File or Fix using HijackThis

Hi,

I ran OTM with that script =, however when I tried to run Your Hosts it said

"Your HOSTS file is marked as a "system file" and can NOT be manipulated.
Press OK to remove the system file attribute, CANCEL to Quit"

Hi jkpenfold.

AVG 9 advice

We need to run a tool called ComboFix, ComboFix will not run until AVG is uninstalled as a protective measure against the anti-virus.
This is because AVG "falsely" detects ComboFix (or its embedded files) as a threat and may remove them resulting in the tool not working correctly which in turn can cause "unpredictable results".
Since AVG cannot be effectively disabled before running ComboFix, the author recommends you to uninstall AVG first.
In the meantime after running ComboFix i would like you to install Avira Personal FREE Antivirus, see instructions at the bottom of this post.

AppRemover

  • Please download AppRemover from Here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click AppRemover to run it.
  • Now follow the prompts to remove
    AVG 9
    .
  • Reboot your computer.

Next.

Download and Run ComboFix

  • Please download ComboFix from one of the following links.

    Link 1.

    Link 2.

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**
  • Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Next.

Download and install Avira Personal FREE Antivirus from Here.

Hi Cypher,

After I changed the HOSTS files attributes I ran the OTM script again.
This time is removed the HOSTS file and when I ran the HostsXprt it worked correctly and I uploaded the new file.
I then ran Malware & RSIT and everything is now working on my browser.

Do you still recommend I remove AVG, run the combo fix and install AVIRA?

Please find the logs of the RSIT below. Info then log.

Hi jkpenfold.
Do you still recommend I remove AVG, run the combo fix and install AVIRA?

Yes i still need you to run ComboFix, we need to be sure your computer is clean.
Post the ComboFix.txt log in your next reply.

Hi jkpenfold.
Thanks for all your help today

You're most welcome.
I need to check something out so please do the following.

SystemLook

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :reg
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options /sub

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

It's taking a while to run the scanner, I should have the log in the morning. (I'm in the UK).
Would you recommend not using AVG? I noticed it's been causing a few problems on other PC's.
Is Avira a more stable software?
