Unread postby Denske » March 20th, 2011, 9:48 pm

I first visited this site for help last fall, with great success. I would greatly appreciate additional help now.

This first attacked last night with warnings and apparent scans, which I tried to stop. It interfered with access and gave multiple warnings, ending up plastering my desktop generic alarms. I shut off computer and selected safe mode but then chose to go to restore point earlier in the week. Computer seemed ok. I updated Avira, scanned and it reported and quarantined Java/Agent.2212. After coming to site and learning about recommended DDS, I downloaded and ran and saved the logs just before the malware struck again. I again booted up in safe mode and transferred files to thumbdrive. The files follow. I will be working from this clean (I hope) computer and leave the other one off until I get directions.

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
This may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Backup your data - XP
Backup your data - Vista
Backup your data - windows 7

Hi, Cypher,

Having a little trouble following your instructions.

Upon turning on computer, the malware was active again. It doesn't allow reaching a requested web site using any of IE, Firefox or Chrome browsers. It give all kinds of bogus warnings and solicitation for activating a service. When I put an address into a url window, I can get just a glimpse of the desired web site before the "warning" comes back. I tried going back to another restore point but it didn't give any relief this time. You had directed me to send two path/file combinations to www.virustotal.com, but I was not able to. As a test I did check to see if I could do the third step to remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0. I didn't actually remove it because I didn't know if doing it out of order would matter.

Is there something I can do to get around the action of the malware? Should I try yet another restore point?

Hi Denske.
Please do not use system restore again unless i instruct you to do so. this could complicate things.
See if you can complete the following, if you have trouble running ComboFix in normal mode, try running it in safe mode.

Download and Run ComboFix

  • Please download ComboFix from one of the following links.

    Link 1.

    Link 2.
  • Note: You must rename it before saving it... Rename it: Cypher.com. See images below.

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

    Image

    Image
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Hi, Cypher,

I downloaded ComboFix using a separate computer and transferred with thumb drive. I had to kill the popups a couple of times, but it ran fine. Resulting file is reproduced below. Btw, it is called "log.txt," not "ComboFix.txt." I think it is what you want anyway, and I didn't think you meant I should rename it.

Have only tried a few things with the computer after running ComboFix. Everything seems ok so far. I was able to get to every web site I tried without pop-up interference, and the shield icon from XP Security 2011 that was in the application tray in the lower right of the screen is no longer there.

Hi Denske.
Good work so far, if possible boot your computer in normal mode from now on.

Disable Avira anti-virus
  • Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for an open white umbrella on red background (looks to this: Image )
  • right click it-> untick the option AntiVir Guard enable.
  • You should now see a closed, white umbrella on a red background (looks to this: Image )
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the fix.

Next.

ComboFix - CFScript
This script is for this user and computer ONLY! Using this tool incorrectly could cause problems with your operating system... preventing it from ever starting again!
You will not have Internet access when you execute ComboFix. All open windows will need to be closed!
  1. Please open Notepad and copy/paste all the text below... into the window:
    Code: Select all
    Driver::
    a6ab7e4f

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\a6ab7e4f.sys

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\lFkFjMd05200

    DDS::

    DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} - hxxp://java.sun.com/update/1.6.0/jinsta ... s-i586.cab

    Firefox::

    FF - Ext: Java Console: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0021-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -
  2. Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt
  3. Please disable any Antivirus or Firewall you have active, as shown in this topic. Please close all open application windows.
*Only* when the 2 items above (Step 3) have been taken care of...
  4. Drag the CFScript.txt (icon) into the ComboFix.exe icon... as seen in the image below:
    Image
This will cause ComboFix to run again.
Do Not use your keyboard or mouse click anywhere in the ComboFix window, as this may cause the program to stall or crash.
Do Not touch your computer when ComboFix is running!
  5. When finished ComboFix will create a log file... you can save this file to a convenient place.
Please copy/paste the ComboFix log file in your next reply.

Next.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  • Launch the application, Check for Updates >> Perform Quick Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • ComboFix log.
  • Malwarebytes log.
  • Please give me an update on how your computer is performing.

Cypher,

No progress yet. Since running ComboFix the first time I had been able to boot successfully into normal mode. Tonight I copied the indicated text into notepad, dragged it into the Cypher.com.exe (ComboFix.exe) file. It seemed to run successfully and I saved it on my desktop (or so I thought). When I tried to run Malwarebytes, the rogue program took over and prevented it from running. When I went looking for the log file produced by ComboFix, I couldn't find it. I also cannot find CFScript.txt, although perhaps it was supposed to disappear after dragging it into the ComboFix icon. It is too late this evening to try to make another CFScript file and try again. Doesn't seem that it will be successful anyway, since the XP Security 2011 program seems to prevent it.

Hi Denske.
Lets try renaming Malwarebytes to see if that will allow it to run.

Rename MBAM and Run Scan

  • Go to Start, Computer.
  • Double-click Local Disk C:.
  • Double-click Program Files.
  • Double-click Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • In the top menu, click Views, choose Detail.
  • Right-click the "application" named mbam, and choose Rename.
  • Type in the new name as winlogon.exe and hit <Enter>
  • At the "Access Denied" notice, click Continue.
  • Wait until the screen indicates completion. (grayed out area disappears)
  • Double-Right click on the new winlogon.exe.
  • Select Check for Updates >> Perform Quick Scan.
  • If any malware items are found, Check all items and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2009-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt

Cypher,

The step I couldn't complete was to use the CFScript in a run with ComboFix and to follow that with a Malwarebytes quick scan. I hope this doesn't constitute a serious violation of your rule not to do anything you don't instruct, but after reporting to you last night I reran ComboFix (without script). As it had the first time, it deleted two files and the computer seemed to work. I'm sorry for not waiting for your new instruction; I won't do it again.

Anyway, after doing it, I was able to complete both the ComboFix rerun with the script and the Malwarebytes quick scan. I am sending results of all three.

Right now the computer is working fine. I am able to use it for this and other web sites. I do notice that the XP Security 2011 icon is still in the program tray, but it is marked with an "X" and is presently disabled.

Log File, ComboFix (Cypher.com) run without script:

Hi, Cypher,

Sorry about that update oversight. I did try the update step previously, but forgot it this time. Simply updating from program didn't work, however. I had to go to their web site. And I see that among the most recent changes was a fix to the update routine.

Computer still working ok, with rogue program apparently still disabled in tray. Haven't turned computer off.

Denske

Here is the log (note that it refers to database ver 6158, rather than 6458 referenced above):

Hi Denske.
Sorry about that update oversight. I did try the update step previously, but forgot it this time.

No need to apologise at all these things happen :)
Try deleting the icon in your system tray, let me know if you were able to do so.

Cypher,

Just to be clear, you instructed as follows:

Try deleting the icon in your system tray, let me know if you were able to do so.
I would like you to do a couple of updates for me then run another scan.

This was followed by the detailed instructions for Java Runtime Environment, Acrobat Reader, ESET, etc. Did you mean that I should try to delete the icon before all of the updating, and report back before separately, or do all steps in the post and then report?
