Hey there...2nd post as I didn't read the instructions thoroughly enough; I am sorry for that...wont happen again.

Google search page redirects when I click on whatever link I choose from the search. The redirects are not just to add sites but also fake search results.

I saw a similar problem posted just a couple down from this but there were a few different symptoms, so I posted this.

Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Sincerely,
Mark

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 3 days will result in this thread being closed.

Hi MarkinVegas

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Don't attempt to install any new software (other than those I ask you to) until we've got your computer clean.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process. If your defensive programmes warn you about any of those tools, be assured that they are not infected, and are safe to use.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • If you're using XP, you'll need Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • If you're using Vista or Windows7, it will be necessary to right click all tools we use and select ----> Run as Administrator
Important As I said earlier removing Malware is a potentially hazardous thing to do, so to increase our chances of recovery in the event of something unexpected happening, I'd like you to make a backup of your Registry before we start to clean your computer.
  • Download ERUNT to your desktop
  • Alternate Download
  • Double-click on erunt_setup.exe to install the program
  • Untick the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  • Click No when you get the option to run Erunt at Windows startup.
  • During the installation, tick Launch Erunt.
  • Accept the default options for running a backup.
  • Erunt will then backup your registry.
  • Click OK to finish.
  • If you are unable to back up your Registry with ERUNT ....
    • Let me know.
    • Do not follow any further instructions until I tell you to.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Nothing of any concern in your HJT log, but then most re-directors don't show on HJT, so I'll need you to run an alternate scan for me.

Download DDS and save it to your Desktop (must be in this location).
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both to your Desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of both into your next reply please.

Post each log separately please so it doesn't get cut short by the forum post size limiter.

Please Note: DDS will ask you to attach the 2nd log, just ignore that instruction and post it please.

Thank you so much for your help. I will certainly do my very best at following all directions.

Here are the two files. The backup went ultra smooth, no problems.

Thanks again
Mark Colquitt

Re: Google redirects and more

Unread postby Gary R » March 5th, 2011, 6:54 pm

Not too much leaping out at me, however I do have a few questions.

  • Did you set your start page to Facemoods search ?
  • Is this a second hand machine, and if not can you tell me why you're not running a standard Windows install ?
  • Did you recently attempt to install Avast Anti-Virus, since you appear to have a failed install of that program on your computer.

Next

I'm going to need to run some extra scans .....

First

  • Download MGA Diagnostic Tool to your Desktop.
  • Double click MGADiag.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click Continue and let the scan run.
  • When finished it will have created a log.
  • Click Copy.
  • Next open Notepad.
    • Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
    • This will open an empty Notepad file.
    • Right click in the empty file and choose Paste to copy the log from MGA Diagnostics into it.
    • Save the file to your Desktop.
  • Close MGA Diagnostic Tool.
  • Copy/Paste the log in your next reply please.

Next

Download CKScanner to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick CKScanner.exe to launch it.
  • Click Search For Files.
  • After a couple minutes a list will appear in the panel to the right.
  • Click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Close CKScanner.
  • Copy/paste the contents of ckfiles.txt in your next reply please (it will be on your Desktop).

Next

Download OTL by OldTimer to your Desktop.

Alternative Download

If you already have a copy of OTL delete it and use this version.

  • Double click OTL.exe to launch the programme.
  • Check the following.
    • Scan all users.
    • Lop check.
    • Purity check.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList
  • Under Custom Scans/Fixes copy/paste the contents of the code box below.

  • Save the report somewhere you can find it. Click Close
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • Answers to my questions.
  • MGADiagnostic log
  • CKScanner log
  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt
  • RKUnhooker log

Please post each log separately to prevent it being cut off by the forum post size limiter. Check each after you've posted it to make sure it's all present, if any log is cut off you'll have to post it in sections.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
