Nearly every time I try to open a non-secure (non-https) website, I get an ad or something completely unrelated to what I am wanting to load. I find this especially when using Google. I figured out pretty quickly that I can successfully access the cached sites.

I've run AdAware, Spybot S&D, AVG Free (several times, the last time, in safe mode), none of them finds a virus or malware. UGH!

Please help! Thank you.

Thank you for your prompt reply!

FYI, after posting here, a virus/malware/trojan/worm, (whatever the hell it is), showed up in my systray as an anti-virus icon, complete with pop-up balloon and window saying my computer has been infected. (No kidding!) I can't do anything to get rid of the windows and warnings.

I will follow your instructions, but I have a feeling that I will eventually need to reformat. And if I do that, I'm planning on purchasing Windows 7 (upgrade). Would an upgrade from XP to 7 be difficult because of the ^%#* infection? Also, the icing on the proverbial cake-- I do not have the XP install disks, I believe the machine came with it already installed.

Correction-- I found the XP install disk. It's SP2, will that conflict with the SP3 that is installed on the machine?

Hi Susan.
Thank you for your prompt reply!

You're welcome.
I will follow your instructions, but I have a feeling that I will eventually need to reformat.
I found the XP install disk. It's SP2, will that conflict with the SP3 that is installed on the machine?

If you reformat your computer using the XP discs this will wipe your PC and restore it to a factory state.
You will then need to install XP SP3 and all of the latest updates.
But we can attempt to clean your computer and a reformat would be a last resort.
Please let me know what you decide to do.

I figured it out yesterday. The machine was infected with AntiMalware Go. And I followed bleepingcomputer.com's instructions for getting rid of it. No reformatting required (this time). Needless to say, I am now running the full version of Malwarebytes.

Many thanks for your time.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
