Google Redirect and Random Redirect/Pop Problem

Unread postby SarahMazing » March 2nd, 2011, 4:05 pm

Hello,

Recently my mother has had quite a bit of trouble with her PC. She has been getting redirected to random search engines and sites when she clicks on a google link, and the only way to get around this is to right click > open in new tab. Even then, that sometimes doesn't work. I have had her do full scans with AVG Free, Spybot S&D, and MalwareBytes. I have also updated her system32>drivers>etc>hosts file, which has stopped many of the pages from loading, but they still attempt to. I would love to have some help with this problem, as it has become quite frustrating for myself and my mother. Thank you so much ahead of time.

Sarah

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forum.

My name is Blottedisk and I will be helping you with your malware problems. This may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine. If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know. Before we delve into this, please note the following important guidelines.

  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The forum is busy and we need to have replies as soon as possible. If I haven't had a reply after 3 days I will bump the topic and if you do not reply by the following day after that then the thread will be locked due to inactivity. However, if you will be away, let us know and we will be sure to keep the thread open.

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start:

Backup Made Easy - XP
Backup your data - Vista
Backup your data - windows 7

Ok, now we start. Please follow the steps below in order:

Step 1 | Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:

This is THE Mirror

--------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Save it to your desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on Minimal Output at the top
  • Download the following file scan.txt to your Desktop. Click here to download it.
  • Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom.
  • A window will appear saying "Click OK to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel".
  • Click the OK button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop.
  • Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in this topic.
    • You may need two posts to fit them both in.

Step 2 | Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

Main Mirror - This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
Zipped Mirror - This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.

Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

Image

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Make sure all options are checked except:
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
    • Show All (This is important, so do not miss it.)

Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Step 3 | Please download TDSSKiller.zip and extract it to your Desktop.

  • Double click on TDSSKiller.exe to launch it.
  • If using Vista or Windows7, when prompted by UAC allow the prompt.
  • Click on Start Scan
  • The scan will run.
  • When the scan has finished a list of detected items should be displayed.
  • Check to make sure the Cure option is selected in the drop down options. If cure is not available DO NOT select either Delete or Quarantine, just select Skip and let me know.
  • Please click on Continue
  • TDSSKiller will now attempt to clean the infection from your computer.
  • It will now ask for a reboot to complete the process, please click on Reboot now
  • When finished re-booting, a log of the cleanup will be found at C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_DD.MM.YYYY_HH.MM.SS_log.txt (where DD.MM.YYYY_HH.MM.SS are the date and time the tool was run)
  • Post the contents in your next reply please.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
