Hi there,

have had problems with computer for few months, first noticed laptop kept on freezing up, did antivirus scan, tried with avast (already had it installed before the laptop started playing up) avast could not complete the scan and kept on freezing, tried with AVG says ok, but still having problem, used spybot S&D and apparently cleared it, but laptop still freezes up, so tried with avast and the scan just doesn't complete, in boot time scan does not progress beyond "c:\programfiles....ion\ko\CLI.Component.Dashboard.resources.dll and when logged in and using interface does not progress beyond "c:\programfiles\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Implement...\CLI.component.Eeu.resources.dll
Just tried another AVAST scan and the laptop froze up and shut down.

I will be away from the computer for the next few days..so please dont lock this thread, i will reply as soon as i get back. Thank you, any help is really appreciated.

Hi sj123,
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
You might want to Copy/Paste/Print these instructions and Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs... including your browser!
Double click to run it. (Right click and choose Run as Administrator in Vista or Win7)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, it will report the total size of files removed. If it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
--------------------------------------------------------
Run DDS
Download DDS by sUBs to your desktop.
Your antivirus software might question the file. If it doesn't allow it, please turn off your AntiVirus first.
  • Double click DDS.scr to run it; give permission if necessary, and wait for the scan to finish
  • As the scan nears completion, DDS.txt will open.
  • DDS will continue scanning
  • When DDS is finished scanning, a second text file named Attach.txt will also open.
  • Please ignore the pop up instruction to zip and attach the Attach.txt file.
  • Save both the DDS.txt and the Attach.txt files to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the Attach.txt and DDS.txt files in your next reply.
  • Use separate replies if you wish.
Remember to turn your AntiVirus back on if you stopped it for the scan.

sj123,
If you just saved HiJackThis to that folder on your desktop named \Hijack\ then open that folder and delete HiJackThis.exe
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender
Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button, All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.
If you don't see it in the Programs List, you can access and start it using the Control Panel.
Start Windows Defender and Click Tools, and then click Options.
Scroll down to the bottom. Under Administrator options, UNcheck the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save.
Administrator permission is required. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable all your antivirus software BEFORE running ComboFix.
.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • DISABLE AVAST
Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like this: Image) and choose (Stop On-Access Protection)
Avast On-Access Protection is now disabled. (Later you can Reverse the procedure to re-enable the On-Access Protection).
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe). Right click and choose "Run as administrator".
  • OK any disclaimers and start the Scan.
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running.
  • It will run through about 50 tasks, and take a while to assemble the report.
When finished, the report will open. Post the log in your next reply, and then Reenable your protection software
A copy of the log will be located here if you need it-> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

also is it ok for me to run avast scan whilst you are still trying to solve the problems??
another question is that after running the combofix, there were some combofix-quarantine, backenv, snapshot @2011-02-19, files were created under a folder named Qoobox in OS (C:), do i need to keep them or can i delete them???
sorry for all the questions
Thank you

sj123,
I would keep MBAM, to update and run it every week or two. It is a good check against common spyware.

You can delete SystemLook and ComboFix (zzz.exe) from your desktop if you machine is running well. Otherwise leave them since they may be needed.
The folder C:\Qoobox is a quarantine folder and it contains some information for ComboFix , along with infected files. The entire folder can be deleted when cleaning is done.

I don't see any malware on your system.
Is your machine behaving properly? If not we can look in more detail.
You can run a full scan with Avast and have it delete or quarantine anything it finds.

sj123,
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download and run the tool named Rkill, which may help in allowing other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run one of the other ones.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator
You only need to get ONE of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about any of these tools, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
Rkill.exe
RKill.com
RKill.scr
Rkill.pif
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If ir does not, delete the desktop entry. Then download and use the one provided in the next link.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.

If you cannot get any of the versions to flash a black box and then disappear, proceed with the following anyway:
--------------------------------------------
TDSSKiller - Rootkit Removal Tool
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky... save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  1. Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
(Vista - W7 users: Right-click and select "Run As Administrator")
If TDSSKiller does not run... rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. ektfhtw.com).
If you don't see file extensions, please see: How to change the file extension.
  2. Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  3. If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  4. If malicious objects are found, they will show in the "Scan results - Select action for found objects" and offer 3 options.
    • Ensure Cure (default) is selected... then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    • If Cure is not offered as an option, choose Skip.
  5. A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  6. Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.
If, for some reason, you can't locate the text file to paste into your reply, just tell me, but DO NOT run the program a second time.

sj123,
We can replace Avast with Antivir to see if we can get complete scan results.
Let's see whether there are are any disc problems first.
-----------------------------------------
Check hard Drive for Errors
Open Notepad... then copy and paste the following line into Notepad:
(Notepad is in Start, Programs, Accessories)
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

Now Save the NotePad file like this:
  • Click on File from the top menu bar.
  • Select Save As, use Filename: testhd.bat and Save As Type: All Files.
  • Choose Desktop as the location
  • Click Save.
Right click on testhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it. OK the UAC.
A Command Prompt box will pop up, then close after a couple minutes.
Please post the contents of the checkhd.txt file from your desktop.
If the file is very long, just copy and paste the LAST 20 or 30 lines into your reply.

sj123,
I would print this out first, to be sure you are doing everything in the correct sequence. Don't Guess.

We are going to remove your Avast5 antivirus and replace it with an antivirus called Avira Antivir.
This is necessary to for all our tools to work corrrectly.

Then we will have Antivir run a scan and give us a report without removing anything.
-----------------------------------------------
Download Antivir Free
This program is free for personal, non-business use.
Download AntiVir Free from here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml
Click the Download button. Then when the "Download Locations" page comes up, choose the first External Mirror (exe)
Save the Installer to your desktop, but don't run it yet. The installer file will be named avira_antivir_personal_en.exe
Double check to be sure you know where to find it.
------------------------------------------------
Remove AVG Antivirus Using the Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click this Entry, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Avast 5

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------
Install Antivir
Right Click the Avira Antivir Installer you saved on your desktop, choose "Run as administrator", and let it Install Antivir.
-----------------------------------------------
Update and Scan with Antivir
Right click the red umbrella icon and choose Start Antivir.
When the window comes up click Start Update.
When the update is complete, click on Scan System Now.
This full scan could take a hour or more.
It will ask what to do with any items it finds.
IMPORTANT >> For Now, tell it to IGNORE any items it finds. Do not choose Quarantine or Delete.
-----------------------------------------------
Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
There wil be reports titled Update and reports titled Scan. Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display Report.
The report contents will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.
