iexplore.exe BHO or not.

Unread postby Butcher » February 13th, 2011, 3:35 pm

Hi
Hoping you can help me with a problem on my laptop. I am running Vista Home Premium
and having a problem with a BHO - iexplore.exe that keeps trying to install when we go
online. I am not sure if this is a problem or not. It has never showed up before until
recently. Spysweeper keeps flagging it as an issue. I am including a HiJackThis log and
an uninstall log.

The favor of a reply will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Butcher

Hi Butcher,

Sorry for the delay.
If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender
Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button, All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.
If you don't see it in the Programs List, you can access and start it using the Control Panel.
Click Tools, and then click Options.
Scroll down to the bottom. Under Administrator options, UNcheck the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save.
Administrator permission is required. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HijackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - MRI_DISABLED - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Ask Toolbar BHO - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Webroot Toolbar - {D4027C7F-154A-4066-A1AD-4243D8127440} - C:\Program Files\Ask.com\GenericAskToolbar.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - (no file)

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Adobe Reader 8.1.3
Ask Toolbar
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 10.0 are vulnerable.
Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr1000_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

After the new Reader is installed, Open Adobe Reader X. (Right click and Run as administrator in Vista/Win7)
OK the license.
Click on Edit and select Preferences.
On the Left, click on the Javascript category and Uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript.
Click on the Security (Enhanced) category and Uncheck Automatically trust sites from my Win OS security zones.
Click on the Trust Manager category and Uncheck Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications.
Click the OK button

Please tell me when the tasks are complete, and tell me the status of the Norton 360.
Is it up to date and paid for? If not, we need to replace it.

Hi askey127,
All but 1 task was completed.I could not remove the Ask toolbar since it is not listed in the add/remove progrms list.
Also,I do not use Norton 360.I use Webroot Spysweeper with antivirus,Malwarebytes and Spywareblaster.I understand that Ask and Norton are listed in the uninstall log for Hijackthis but I don't see them in add/remove programs.Let me know what I should do next.

Butcher,
Webroot Spysweeper installs the Ask toolbar(they get paid for it), and probably doesn't allow the bar to be uninstalled separately.
The Ask toolbar is spyware that delivers misleading searches, and is one reason Webroot is not popular among forum helpers.
If you ever install Webroot again, be careful to DISALLOW installation of the toolbar

What I would like to do is Uninstall Webroot, clean your machine, and leave it to you whether you want to re-install it.
Cleaning a machine with Webroot on there is difficult because it does not allow disabling the Antivirus.
---------------------------------------------
Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
Please Be patient. This tool removes hundreds of files and settings. It will let you know when it's done.

=================================================================================
If it's important to you to keep Webroot, stop here and tell me. If you are willing to proceed, please do as follows:
=================================================================================

These directions should work exactly.
Do each step before proceeding to the next.
I would print this out first, to be sure you are doing everything in the correct sequence. Don't Guess.

We are going to remove your Webroot Software and replace it with an antivirus called Avira Antivir.
This is necessary to for all our tools to work corrrectly.

Then we will have Antivir run a scan and give us a report without removing anything.
-----------------------------------------------
Download Antivir Free
This program is free for personal, non-business use.
Download AntiVir Free from here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml
Click the Download button. Then when the "Download Locations" page comes up, choose the first External Mirror (exe)
Save the Installer to your desktop, but don't run it yet. The installer file will be named avira_antivir_personal_en.exe
Double check to be sure you know where to find it.
------------------------------------------------
Remove Webroot Spysweeper and Antivirus Using the Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click this Entry, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Webroot Software

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Uninstall ALL of it if asked.
-----------------------------------------------
Install Antivir
Right Click the Avira Antivir Installer you saved on your desktop, choose "Run as administrator", and let it Install Antivir.
-----------------------------------------------
Update and Scan with Antivir
Right click the red umbrella icon and choose Start Antivir.
When the window comes up click Start Update.
When the update is complete, click on Scan System Now.
This full scan could take a hour or more.
It will ask what to do with any items it finds.
IMPORTANT >> For Now, tell it to IGNORE any items it finds. Do not choose Quarantine or Delete.
-----------------------------------------------
Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
There wil be reports titled Update and reports titled Scan. Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display Report.
The report contents will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.

askey127,
Since I never purchased or installed Norton 360 on my laptop I have no idea what version it is.Your link asks me which version I have 1.0,2.0,3.0 or 4.0.I understand that the Hijackthis uninstall log shows Norton 360 but in doing a search of the machine I can't find anything from Norton. The link does not ask me what version of Windows I have. How do you want me to proceed?

Just proceed with the rest of the sequence. We will get Norton later.

Butcher,
That's a good result.
----------------------------------------------
You can download the free version of Revo Uninstaller from here: http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uni ... nload.html
I would attempt to use it to Uninstall Norton 360 and Ask Toolbar.
It will succeed many times when regular methods fail, and it is very good at removing remnants.
Let me know.
-----------------------------------------------------------
In Any Case, Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. You can easily control any Browser Helper or Startup Program with it.

Tell me how it's running.

askey127,
Installed Revo and WinPatrol.Revo did not see anything from Norton.Removed Ask toolbar however this error came up: Error 1905.Module C:\ProgramFiles\Ask.com\Generic AskToolbar.dll failed to unregister.HRESULT-2147220472(Is this a phone number?).Contact your support personnel. What am I doing with WinPatrol? Is it similiar to Spybot? Also, before I removed Webroot the BHO I kept seeing trying to install when I went online was gone however when you exited a website or came offline it would reappear.I kept blocking the install process but this was associated with Webroot.I have not seen any evidence of it trying to install. What do you want me to do next.

Thanks agian,

Butcher,
I think the original difficulty had to do with the Ask Toolbar.
I want to be sure it's gone.
---------------------------------------------
Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    Ask Toolbar*

    :folderfind
    Ask.com

    :regfind
    Ask Toolbar

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Butcher,
We can take care of that.
Download and run OTM
Click here to download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right Click OTM.exe and choose "Run as administrator" to run it.
  • Copy the following code and paste it in the white space under Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved (below the yellow line at the bottom of the window).
    Code: Select all
    :reg
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\GenericAskToolbar.ToolbarWnd.1]

  • Click the MoveIt! button
  • OTM will ask to reboot the machine. Please do so.
  • You can find the log as described below and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
    • Start Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad)
    • In Notepad, click File, then click Open
    • In the File Name: box, type *.log then press Enter
    • Navigate to C:\_OTM\MovedFiles and locate the newest log and open it (they are named as {date}_{time}.log)
    • Copy the contents of the log and paste it in your next reply.
