Computer runs very slow

Unread postby NatalieGB » January 17th, 2011, 6:56 am

Thank you for taking my case. I have done all of the things in the "Read this first" section that you recommended including defraging the "c" drive. Everything runs very slow. On boot up, the Microsoft music da da da da da is distorted. The mouse does not scroll smoothly. Before I ran Hijack This, I ran TFC by Old Timer and a quick scan of Malware Bytes. The logs you requested are listed below. I have also included the log from Malware Bytes for your review. (I deleted the infected file)

Thanks for your help.

Re: Computer runs very slow

Unread postby Cypher » January 17th, 2011, 2:14 pm

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forum.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Backup Made Easy - XP
Backup your data - Vista
Backup your data - windows 7

I have also included the log from Malware Bytes for your review. (I deleted the infected file)

Did you delete the infected item after you posted the log because it seems you took no action?.

    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Next.

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

You should still have this program on your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  • Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(This log can be lengthy, so a separate post may be needed.)

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • OTM log.
  • RSIT log.txt.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

Re: Computer runs very slow

Unread postby NatalieGB » January 18th, 2011, 6:40 pm

Hi Cypher. thanks again for your fast response. Acouple of questions. I notice in one of the above logs (RSIT I think), a process is running called HP Smnple Save. (R2 BackupService;BackupService; C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Application Data\HP SimpleSave Application\uUACTokenSvc.exe [2010-07-01 83512]). This program came with a HP external hard drive for automatic back up. Can I delete it?
The 2nd question is really a comment. I ran and pasted your instructions in OTM. It did ask for a reboot and I did. I had to sign in to run Windows (thats new) and a new file called thumbs.db showed up on my desktop. (My wife had been moving pictures to the external hard drive). After I signed in the OTM program was still on the desktop and asked me if I wanted to run, save or cancel. I was'nt sure what to do so I ran it again and I immediatly got a log file on the screen which I pasted below. FYI, on start up, the da,da,da,da,da MS music is still distorted and the mouse behaves poorly.

Thanks,
Nat

Hi Natalie.
This program came with a HP external hard drive for automatic back up. Can I delete it?

Can i ask why you want to delete it?
Please run RSIT for me again and post the resulting log.

New developments....Since running OTM, the only way I can get the computer to reboot is by turning it off and then cold starting it. If I try to reboot from the start menu, the computer goes through the process until it gets to the Microsoft screen "Windows is starting up" It seems stuck at that point. It's not frozen because I can move the mouse pointer, but nothing I do seems to get it going. I eventually turn off the machine, wait a little bit and power up. After the XP screen I get a box that says "Logon Message". The message is "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction" There is an OK button in the box which I click on and it brings me to the sign on screen. At this point I click on "Nat's Computer" (the only option) and I get a message "loading preffrences" This seems to take a long time until I get my desktop. One other thing, when I click on IE on the desktop, it takes a long time to load. Music is still distorted, though not as bad.

To answer your question about deleting the HP Simple Save, I don't use that drive for system backup, only for picture archive. The backup program is on the hard drive in case I ever want to use it. It just seemed that I didn't need that program running in the background when I wasn't using it.

Did you delete my last post or did I not send it properly? In any event here is the results of the latest RSIT in case you didn't get it.

Hi Natalie.
Hi Cypher, in my frustrated state, I forgot to thank you for helping me figure out whats going on with my computer!
No problem and you're welcome.
Did you delete my last post or did I not send it properly?

No none of your posts were deleted.
It just seemed that I didn't need that program running in the background when I wasn't using it.

It's a legit file so i wouldn't recommend it's removal.

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • * This can take a while. Please be patient *.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of this log in you're next reply.
  • This log can be lengthy you may have to post it in separate replies.
  • Note: You may get the following warning - it is ok - just ignore it:
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Next.

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start->Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • RKUnHooker log.
  • checkhd.txt.
