System restore, Windows update/installer problems

Unread postby georgec84 » January 16th, 2011, 8:56 pm

Hi everyone,

Please excuse the long post but I'd like to explain what's happening with my system.

XP SP3
Dell Dimension 4500

Last week I was infected by the Alureon.a virus. This prevented me from booting my PC, but I was able to clean it using help from various sites/forums.

Despite this, my PC has some leftover issues. The Turn off computer button from the Start Menu causes explorer.exe to lag for a minute or two. I can either wait for the blue window to show up or use Task Manager to manually end explorer, run it again, then simply select Shut Down/Standby/Restart from the Task Manager menu. Yet, the same lag occurs at the blue Windows is shutting down... screen. After about a minute or so the shut down (or restart) actually occurs.

The other issues relate to System Restore and Windows Update. I have found these don't work. I get the "System restore cannot protect your computer at this time. Please restart and try again." error for SR, while when I try Windows Update it gives me an error code in IE (Error number: 0x80248011). I have done what the Microsoft website suggests to fix this error to no avail. I have run services.msc and eventvwr.msc to analyze error messages and here they are:

wuauclt (612) An attempt to determine the minimum I/O block size for the volume "C:\" containing "C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs\" failed with system error 5 (0x00000005): "Access is denied. ". The operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).

The System Restore initialization process failed.

The System Restore Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the drive specified.

I have attempted various fixes (e.g. making sure System Restore is set to run automatically), but the root problems remain. I believe that these errors are the result of damage the Alureon.a infection did to my registry.

In addition, Windows Installer is not working and says "windows installer could not be accessed". Basically I can't uninstall anything.

Other notes:

- System file checker (sfc /scannow) and chkdsk report no errors. All my system files are intact.
- I have run Dial-a-fix per advice from other forums but that hasn't changed anything.
- I wish to avoid reinstalling XP as it would be extremely troublesome for many reasons.
- I have also read that's it's possible to try backing up restore points (Sys Vol Info folder), reinstall system restore, and load a restore point. I am not sure if this would accomplish much since something in my registry is preventing access to these programs.
- Last two windows updates installed were KB938759 and KB 978601

I'm posting here because I wonder if there is still some residual infection. I hope you guys can help me. My HijackThis and uninstall logs follow. Thanks.

Re: System restore, Windows update/installer problems

As you are currently receiving help with your System Restore and Windows Update issues at Tech Support Forums, we would suggest you continue on there:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/ ... 44124.html

In addition, it appears you have used a number of malware removal tools and have gone through various malware removal procedures in an attempt to clean up your computer. It is quite possible that the malware and/or the malware removal process has damaged vital system files. You are also actively engaging in the use of Peer to Peer filesharing software, which is most likely the source of your computer's infection and subsequent loss of functionality.

Your best option at this point is to reformat your computer and reinstall its operating system.

As you're receiving help elsewhere, this topic is now closed.
