This is my daughter's notebook. She is complaining that she cannot download programs (I asked her to download Spybot), that IE shuts down often and unexpectedly, and is generally acting very erratically.
You recently helped me with a 'cleaning', and I hope you can do the same for her. Thanks!

Welcome back to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT install new programs while we are fixing this machine.
  • Be sure to use the subscribe button to receive notification by Email that you have been replied to.
If I do not hear from you in 3 days from my last post this topic will be closed. You will need to start another.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

NOTE to Vista and windows 7 users:
For any tool I ask you to run you will need to "right click on it and choose
"Run as Administrator"

You may want to try and use firefox if your having trouble downloading some tools we'll need to work on this machine.

____________________________
Download Firefox browser from here and install it..

In fire fox click tools/options..
Under the general tab look at downloads and choose from there using the browse button where you would like them to download. I choose desktop because it works for me. ( I may have you download many things to the desktop so this may save you time) You may be comfortable having them elsewhere.
or you may choose :Always ask me where to save files" and it will do just that then you can browse to where you want them saved each time.

___________________________
I see no signs of an anti virus program.. SHAME!!
I suggest you get one in asap.
I will list 2 free anti virus programs just choose 1.

AVIRA
or
AVAST FREE

Download and install one of these and run a full scan.

___________________________________________
Uninstall Programs
Start/control panel/Programs and features ;
And Uninstall the following

Java(TM) 6 Update 17
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Spybot search and destroy - Good program but gets in the way of cleaning. You may reinstall it after your done.

I might uninstall registry booster also. I personally use no thing to "tune up" my registry.

_____________________________________________
Update Java Runtime

You are using an old and vunerable version of Java. The lateset is Java Runtime Environment (Java SE 6 Update 23).
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download JDK 6 Update 23(JDK or JRE)
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

_____________________________________________
RSIT
  • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

This log will also produce a Hijackthis log so NO reason to post one of those.

_________________________
In your next reply I would like to see:
  • The report from RSIT
  • Let me know what you were and weren't able to do.

Remeber my comment about not being able to download programs?
Neither Avast Free or Avira would download. After waiting for the file transfers both programs showed an error screen that couldn't be copied. the avast message was : "The app failed to start because its side by side config. is incorrect Please see the app event log for more detail." I could NOT copy the voluminous event log.
The avira message was in the same nature...something about Windows updates running parallel...

Spybot could NOT be removed. When I tried, I got the following message: "Messages file C:\program files\spybot s&d\inins000.msg is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program"

The old Javas came off and the new one was installed.

Re: Cannot download; redirects, etc

Unread postby Bob4 » January 13th, 2011, 8:12 pm

Remeber my comment about not being able to download programs?
Yes I remember. Thats why I was hoping to get Firefox installed with the possibility of IE having an issue. I see we got RSIT onto the machine. Looks as if this is possibly a Microsoft Visual C error. So let's see if reinstalling it helps with the downloading and file issue.

From a machine that you can download from.
Download this file and move it to the problem machine with a flash drive or CD and install it.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/7/7/977B481A-7BA6-4E30-AC40-ED51EB2028F2/vcredist_x86.exe

After that reboot the machine if your so prompted and try and re-download one of those Anti virus programs I listed above.
Please let me know how/if that helped.

Sorry, I thought the Firefox suggestion wasn't critical...I installed Firefox, then tried to install Avira from it with the same result. The error message daid the a Windows update was running parallel, and to try the install later.

I also had no luck downloading the Microsoft program from a flash drive...i got it on the machine, but it wouldn't load.

Sorry, I thought the Firefox suggestion wasn't critical
As it turns out it wasn't. At the time I didn't have any other information other than you couldn't download anything.
But if I ask you to do something it's probably best to give it a try.

.I installed Firefox, then tried to install Avira from it with the same result. The error message daid the a Windows update was running parallel, and to try the install later.
Does this mean you can download it OK?
Just cannot install it ?

Windows update was running parallel
Please write down and post the entire error message for me. Never heard of and can't find any information on that error.

Avira downloaded but won't install...even after removing the registry items.
Below is the exact text of the error message:

"SETUP OF AVIRA ANTIVIR PERSONAL-FREE AV

Installation of the MS Runtime Redistributable Kit has failed.

The probable cause is a Windows update runningin parallel.
Please check whether a Windows update is in progress and run A. a little later.

If the installation fails again, please contact A. support.

Setup will close."

TDSSKiller installed, but no infection was reported.

Nod32 stopped at Step 2 of initialization with an "Unexpected Error 101"

This isn't going very well. I'm fearing damage may be fairly extent and format might be in order. While it will take me a while to go through this next log I suggest you back up all important pics /documents on this machine. Place them on a CD or a flash drive.

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
