Computer takes a looong time to load web pages even with DSL

Unread postby ottersea » December 27th, 2010, 8:57 pm

I have just gone thru removing a lot of problems with the computer and now it is extremely slow loading web pages. My wife's computer that uses the same home network runs fine but mine is extremely slow. I try to load a webpage and it just sits there with no activity for a long time. I can take as much as 30 seconds for a web page to load while the wife's does the same in a second. For instance this page took 20 seconds to load. I do not know if there is a bug or if it is hardware. I am using the motherboard ethernet port. I am enclosing the hijackthis log. If do not see anything there that might cause this I will have to try getting another ethernet card to use. Thanks

Hi again ottersea,
It looks to me that the DNS Client did not get disabled as it should.
This will produce the symptoms you have.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Disable DNS Client Service. This is necessary when installing a large HOSTS file.
From Start, or Start, Run
Type services.msc in the box and hit <Enter>
Give permission to continue if necessary.
Scroll down to DNS Client on the list, Right Click it and choose Properties.
Under Service Status, click Stop. Wait until it reports the service stopped.
Under Startup Type, choose Disabled.
Then click Apply, OK

Let me know how it works, or what you observe.

Went there and DNS Client was already disabled. Under service status it said stopped. So that is not it. It is weird, sometimes it just screams along and at other times it is dead slow.

It's also true that any time you delete the Internet cache with a big cleanup, it takes a week or so to fill it back up.
Meanwhile, things are slow.
It will likely recover OK.

Okay will give it a week or so to see if it speeds up. I also notice that on a lot of sites where there is a link that goes to another page i6 does not work now. I get a unable to connect message when using firefox. In IE I get Internet explored cannot display page. I do not know if this is because something that was changed or what but can be aggravating.

Your HOSTS file will prevent connections to sites that purvey spyware, adware, and viruses.
This will help prevent you from getting infected with drive-by downloads.
Look at it as a blessing, and value those sites that you can connect to.

The HOSTS file is here C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\HOSTS
You can edit the file with notepad and remove the line for any website which you do not want blocked.
(You may have to right click and check properties, and change the Read-Only box for the HOSTS file first, before you can edit)
Just be aware that it knows more than you about the sites.

Okay this is getting ridicules. Now the computer is even slower than before. I tried loading my email at yahoo.com and it never did load. I ran a speedtest.net test and it showed .56ms ping, 1.50 Mbs download, .26Mbs upload. Sometimes the windows screensaver will not activate. The printer keeps going online and offline. Both firefox and IE8 are slow loading. It was just once in a while that it slowed down now it has been slow all day. Any ideas what is wrong or am I going to have to wipe the drive and start all over even tho I don't want to do that. Thanks

OK, let's remove a bunch of things from automatic startup.
They can be re-started one at a time, if one of these proves to be the culprit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {872b5b88-9db5-4310-bdd0-ac189557e5f5} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {872b5b88-9db5-4310-bdd0-ac189557e5f5} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {872b5b88-9db5-4310-bdd0-ac189557e5f5} - (no file)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS.000\system32\ctfmon.exe
O23 - Service: Roxio UPnP Renderer 9 - Sonic Solutions - C:\Program Files\Roxio\Digital Home 9\RoxioUPnPRenderer9.exe
O23 - Service: Roxio Upnp Server 9 - Sonic Solutions - C:\Program Files\Roxio\Digital Home 9\RoxioUpnpService9.exe
O23 - Service: LiveShare P2P Server 9 (RoxLiveShare9) - Sonic Solutions - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxLiveShare9.exe
O23 - Service: RoxMediaDB9 - Sonic Solutions - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxMediaDB9.exe
O23 - Service: Roxio Hard Drive Watcher 9 (RoxWatch9) - Sonic Solutions - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatch9.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine

Now see how it runs.

(If you want to do just 3 or 4 at a time, and reboot and check speed after each session, you may be able to narrow it down quickly, if you find out the set of removals that speed it up.).
