Multiple Malware Found, Keyboard not working

Unread postby PeCh909 » December 7th, 2010, 12:29 am

Hi,

I'm actually helping a friend fix this computer and I'm at a road's end. This computer is for home use only. I am running windows XP with SP3. The computer originally loaded up windows fine up to the log-in screen, but immediately after log in, explorer.exe would fail to load. The only way to run any program was via the task manager. Any time I tried to run a malware/virus scanner, it would automatically close. The keyboard also doesn't work properly. I am able to type the first ~30 or so letters without problem but beyond that, it starts autodeleting what I type and becomes unresponsive. I did a repair install with the windows XP cd and was able to recover explorer.exe. I was successful in running Malwarebyes, Spybot, and AVG anti-virus after the repair install and found about 25 trojans, 15 malware entries and multiple spyware (which I cleared). The computer was actually running faster explorer.exe was recovered, but now is very slow and the keyboard still doesn't work. I'm using my own laptop to write this post. Any .txt or log files are being transferred to my computer via usb drive so I can post it. Thank you

PeCh909,
Let me explain what I think is going on, based on your description and the logs posted.

This machine has a P2P program (utorrent), an obsolete Adobe reader, some obsolete Java installations.
Any of these can get a machine infected, but the "Free Files" from using the P2P program are the worst. No machine can tolerate using a P2P program for long.
This machine appears to have been infected by Bamital.D, a very serious infection, which is difficult to fix.
Bamital.D infects two critical Windows files: explorer.exe and wininit.exe.
He had the misfortune of having AVG on board as his antivirus.
AVG, in its wisdom, deleted one or more of the critical but infected Windows files, leaving the computer unworkable.

------------------------------------------------------
Warning - Compromised Data
Because the infection has had remote control access to all the Internet activities, you should assume that any data on it may have been stolen.
Take whatever precautions you think sensible about any financial (credit cards, banking, etc.), or other critical information that has been passed through or stored on the machine.
I would suggest changing all account names/numbers, and passwords for ANY accounts that have been used with the machine.
That includes not only banking, credit cards, and financial, but also website and e-mail accounts as well.
Don't use the infected machine to make the changes.

Now, what to do.
My recommendation at this point is to do a Complete System Recovery.
Most machines have such a Recovery Option, which puts the machine back into its "as purchased" state. All files and applications will be lost.
A Repair Install is a partial rebuild, and is not likely to work after Bamital downloads so many other trojans, and AVG deletes the files.
If the machine does not have a Complete System Recovery option from a hidden partition, I would regard a full HD Reformat and Re-install of XP as the only solution.
Most manufacturers will supply an Installation CD for a fee, if it did not come with the machine.

If a Complete System recovery can be done, painful as it is, the machine would then need to immediately install all the Windows Updates, and a new antivirus (Avira Antivir or Microsoft Security Essentials would be suitable).

Sounds good. Ill try to salvage any important files and just reformat the machine.

Thank you again,

Since the resolution of this issue will require a Reformat and Re-Install of Windows, this topic is closed.
