Browser search results are being redirected!

Unread postby EliWCoyote » December 6th, 2010, 9:31 pm

Thanks in advance for your help! Something is hijacking my web searches on my home computer:
1) When I start to type search text into Google search, it used to start the search and show me results based on a character-by-character match. Now it waits until I hit Enter or click the Search button.
2) The search results appear to be normal Google search results, but if I hover over a link, I see it goes to "www.google.com/go?27061234" or a similar 8-digit number. I think I should be seeing a link identical to the one printed on-screen.
3) Clicking on any Google search result routes me to some random commercial web site that has nothing remotely to do with the search or the search result.
4) Although I use Google Chrome as my primary browser, Internet Explorer seems to have the same problem.
5) At first I could go to http://www.yahoo.com and use that search engine instead, but it now appears to be doing something similar. A test I ran just now tried to send me to a "harmful" web site that was blocked by my anti-virus software.
6) I use the latest version of both AVG Anti-Virus and Spybot Search & Destroy, and both are current. Two complete scans with both have not found any problems.
7) Nothing else out of the ordinary has happened...yet. I'm a little concerned that whatever this is might be keylogging or the like.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear.
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.
  • DO NOT be installing new programs while we are fixing this machine.
  • Be sure to use the subscribe button to receive notification by Email that you have been replied to.
If I do not hear from you in 3 days from my last post this topic will be closed. You will need to start another.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire 5.5.8
Seeings Lime wire has closed it's doors no reason to keep it anyway.

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programmes.
I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.
Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Also uninstall spybot search and destroy. Although it's a good program it sometimes stops us from making changes we need to. You can reinstall it later when we are finished..
Just easier this way.

Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and choose Run as Administrator in Vista or Win7)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.

RSIT
  • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

This log will also produce a Hijackthis log so NO reason to post one of those.

Re: Browser search results are being redirected!

Unread postby EliWCoyote » December 8th, 2010, 11:22 pm

1) LimeWire uninstalled
2) Spybot uninstalled
3) Three elements fixed in HijackThis
4) Ran HostsEXpert.exe
5) Ran TFC.exe
6) Ran RSIT, logs pasted below
7) Tested browser, Google appears to be working exactly as expected now. All unusual behavior mentioned in my first message is gone.

Also, assuming (just for the moment) that we have corrected the problem and you have spare time to answer my dumb questions :), I would like to ask a few.

1) Did I understand your instructions correctly at the end of "HostEXperts" that I should click "Make readable only" and switch it back to "Make writeable" again?

2) Judging from the solutions you had me apply, it seems to me like this was the work of a rogue website I visited that somehow rewrote my Hosts file and/or redirected my browser during my one visit...rather than from malware that physically installed itself on my computer. Is this correct? Can you tell me more about what caused this?

3) Would any of the utilities you had me install be useful as a cleanup tool if re-run on a monthly basis, or should I just discard them after we're finished?

1) Did I understand your instructions correctly at the end of "HostEXperts" that I should click "Make readable only" and switch it back to "Make writeable" again?
yes Making it read only keeps it
from being changed by a rogue site or any other malware.

2) Judging from the solutions you had me apply, it seems to me like this was the work of a rogue website I visited that somehow rewrote my Hosts file and/or redirected my browser during my one visit...
rather than from malware that physically installed itself on my computer. Is this correct?
So far it seems that way.

EliWCoyote wrote:
3) Would any of the utilities you had me install be useful as a cleanup tool if re-run on a monthly basis, or should I just discard them after we're finished?
Once were done I'll ask you to remove any
tools you no longer need. AT this point you can keep hostexpert and TFC cleaner. Hostexpert to modify your host file if need be and TFC for regular monthly maintenance.

Things looking better. Let's get 2 more scans to be sure.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post the contents of that log.

If you accidently close it you may find it here.
Start -> All Programs -> Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware -> Logs

______________________________________________
Scan with ESET online scanner:
  • Open Internet Explorer by right-clicking the IE icon (on the Start menu or quick launch) and selecting Run as administrator
  • NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start, copy/paste the following command into the search box and press Enter:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.
  • Please be sure to close this Internet Explorer window before continuing.

We have been noticing more and more problems with AVG these days.
I would uninstall that and install either one of these free anti virus programs instead.

1) Ran mbam. Found and removed about 4 objects. One appeared active (cleanmgr.dll), the rest were in an old backup folder; it's highly likely they were leftovers that haven't been active in years.

2) Could not run Internet Explorer as Administrator, get the following message: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." If I run Internet Explorer as current user with "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" checked, nothing happens. Only by running it normally, or Run As current user while unchecking this box, does IE open. Ran ESET this way instead. ESET found 13 threats and did not remove them, but they are all in the aforementioned old backup folders and it's extremely likely they are dormant and can be deleted manually or what-have-you. Note: Notepad copy-and-paste command no longer works as written, the correct path is now "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner".

3) Everything's working fine insofar as I have used it, but I'm trying to keep web browsing and especially web searching to a minimum until this is resolved, in case doing so re-installs things or something.

Here are the logs you requested:

Whoops My typo.

D:\My Documents 20060202\My Downloads\BSINSTALL.exe
D:\My Documents 20060202\My Downloads\Junk Drawer\BSINSTALL-1.exe

Navigate to and Empty this folder completely
D:\Backup from old C drive\Documents and Settings\Eli\Local Settings\Temp

If you choose to use anything off this hard drive ever I would certainly scan each file one at a time. Remember that AVG has already missed them.

Great news ! Image

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

_______________________________
Delete the following:
RSIT.exe

___________________________________
Please create a 'clean' System Restore Point:
The reason for doing this is in case you need system restore you don't put back all we just took out.

Click start/all programs /accessories/system tools/system restore

Vista and windows 7 users must now choose System protection.

Place a check mark by turn off system restore

Windows will give you a warning click yes
Click APPLY
REBOOT the computer

Now go right back to the same place and place a check mark by system restore
Click APPLYand OK

Firewalls
A few words on Microsoft firewall in XP . It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended).
3. Click OK.
I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:
Never run 2 firewalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Online Armor Firewall
Sunbelt Personal Firewall Free

A few things to help this from possibly happening again

________________________________________
Windows Updates
Be certain automatic updates are turned on
XP.
Vista
Windows 7

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical/important updates.
I know rebooting sometimes can be at an inconvenient time. Postpone it till later. This will still take less time than we needed to fix your machine. ;-)

SpywareBlaster

Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Browser settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs.
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.

SiteHound

http://www.firetrust.com/en/products/sitehound

This tool bar will help protect you from.

Over 4,000 fake bank and credit sites.
Tens of thousands of pornographic
and adult sites.
The never ending fake phishing sites.
Malicious sites, which can infect you
with spyware and adware if you visit
them.
Sites to download software which
may infect your computer with
spyware, a virus or adware

_______________________________________
Always watch closely to any software your installing.
If they want to install something more than their program stop right there and investigate what it is they want to place on your computer.
If they give you the option not to install it choose that until you investigate it completely.
The more you install that you don't want or need the more you'll wish you didn't.

Read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Finally have a read here about securing your computer a bit more. It''l probably take less time to read this than it did to fix your machine.
