Browser Redirects Trying to Help a Friend

Unread postby InfiniteD » November 25th, 2010, 4:47 pm

I'm working on a friends machine remotely through Log-Me-In and having difficulty with this particular infection removal. According to my friend, it seemed to have started around the time when a "Whitesmoke" toolbar was installed (I didn't ask if it was intentional or not). I removed it through Add/Remove programs and HJT entries that were obviously related to it. There is also (still) a Street Ads Browser Enhancer which is said to be installed in C:\WINDOWS\$NtUinstallMTF197\. ESET Smart Security 4 is the installed security suite and it keeps popping up with blocked web sites that something on the computer is still trying to access. The web sites area bunch of mumbo-jumbo, like "crj71ki813ck.com/zGKHDGdvFj/6NgT+Unz7y9Qq6..."; the most common attempt seems to begin with "lkckclckli1i.com/...." Different IPs.

So far I've thrown at it:

1) Malwarebytes
2) SuperAntiSpyware
3) Spybot S&D
4) Trend Micro Housecall
5) Bit Defender Online Scanner

The Bit Defender scan is still running so far having not found anything. The only real symptoms of infection at this point seem to be the denied web site access attempts that ESET keeps blocking and when you try to do a Google search, it will give you the results, but when you click on one of them it does not take you to the desired web page and instead begins to redirect.

Here is the most recent HJT log:

Update: Resolved. Ended up being a TDSS Rootkit infection and Kaspersky's TDSS Killer seems to have done the job. Following up with MBAM scans to be on the safer side. Thank you.
