Tough Google redirect virus.

Unread postby dieselfoot » November 12th, 2010, 8:22 am

Hi,

My name is Chris and last night I found that I had been infected by what I believe is the google redirect virus. I spent most of the night scanning, rebooting, and researching solutions to no avail. I've downloaded and run Malwarebytes, tdsskiller, as well as a couple of others. Since running tdsskiller I haven't had the redirecting issue, but I'm still concerned that I may still be infected.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi dieselfoot,
By running those programs yourself, the analysis and correction may have been made more difficult.
You have probably had a rootkit infection. They can be very serious.
We will try to retrieve enough information so we can figure out how to proceed.
Please don't install, remove or scan with anything unless I ask, until we are through with your machine.
-----------------------------------------------
Please open My Computer and double click the C: drive
In the main C: directory, you will likely see at least one file with a long name like TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt
d,m,y,h,m,s will be time stamp digits representing day, month, year, hour, minute, and second.
If there is more than one file with this kind of name, please let me know
Please double click the most recent of these files (with the latest time stamp) so it comes up in Notepad.
Highlight the entire contents (Ctrl+A), Copy (Ctrl+C), and paste(Ctrl+V) into a reply here.
-----------------------------------------------
Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=491394#p491394
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P program Azureus in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time.
If you have used this, you can be fairly confident this is a principal reason your computer is infected

It's really important, if you value your PC at all, to stay away from P2P file sharing programs, like utorrent, Bittorrent, Azureus, Frostwire, Limewire, Vuze, Shareaza, Bitlord.
(Limewire has just been shut down by the courts).
Criminals have "planted" thousands upon thousands of infections in the "free" shared files. Some of the recent infections can turn your machine into a doorstop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Ad-Aware SE Personal
Azureus
CleanUp!
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
If the Spybot Uninstaller asks whether you want to remove all files and settings, answer YES. If it reports that it cannot remove all files, that's OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
So will be looking for the following in your reply:
  • Contents of the last TDSS Killer log
  • Info on whether there is more than one TDSS killer log
  • Info on any problems Uninstalling the requested programs.

dieselfoot,
You had a serious infection planted in the Master Boot Record of your hard disk.
Looks like you were lucky and TDSSKiller fixed it.
Now to check for resulting file and settings damage elsewhere in the machine.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable all your antivirus software after downloading but BEFORE running ComboFix.
.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • DISABLE AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG icon in the task bar.
    • Click on Tools.
    • Select Advanced.
    • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
    • In the main pane, DESELECT the option to "Enable Resident Shield."
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe)
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it. (You would).
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts.
When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • It will run through about 50 procedures, then take a while to assemble its output log.
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running.
  • When finished, the report will open. Post the log in your next reply, and then Reenable your AVG protection software
A copy of the log will be located here if you need it-> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

The Recovery Console produces a brief (2 second) black screen at bootup which allows an additional technical resource for repair in case of a major failure. In regular operation, you can ignore it.

Re: Tough Google redirect virus.

Unread postby dieselfoot » November 12th, 2010, 5:39 pm

Ok, I had to uninstall AVG as ComboFix wouldn't run with Avg off. Now I am temporarily without anti-virus. Do you have any recommendations for anti-virus software that isn't AVG?
Thanks again,
Chris

dieselfoot,
Looks quite good.
------------------------------------------------------
Warning - Compromised Data
Because the infection has had remote control access to your machine, you should assume that any data on it may have been stolen.
Take whatever precautions you think sensible about any financial (credit cards, banking, etc.), or other critical information that has been passed through or stored on the machine.
I would suggest changing all account names/numbers, and passwords for ANY accounts that have been used with the machine.
That includes not only banking, credit cards, and financial, but also website and e-mail accounts as well.
------------------------------------------------------
How is the system running?
You can keep the Antivir free, or sign up for the paid version which autoscans e-mails.
Free version gives one nag screen per day.

You also can uninstall Antivir and immediately install Microsoft Security Essentials if you prefer.
(We needed Antivir for the log)

I would update Malwarebytes Anti-malware and run it. You don't need any other Anti-spyware program.
------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it shows any malware items, Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
.

askey127,

Thank you again for quickly helping me through this mess. I'm going to stick with Antivir for the time being and I also switched firewalls from windows to comodo firewall.

dieselfoot,
We will try to retrieve enough information so we can figure out how to proceed.
Please don't install, remove or scan with anything unless I ask, until we are through with your machine.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please Uninstall Comodo and re-enable the Windows Firewall.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.

dieselfoot,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: avgsecuritytoolbar - {F2DDE6B2-9684-4A55-86D4-E255E237B77C} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG10\Toolbar\IEToolbar.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdate1c9e4ee3bae6daa) (gupdate1c9e4ee3bae6daa) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run ComboFix
  • FIRST DISABLE AVIRA ANTIVIR
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for an open umbrella on red background (looks like this:Image )
    • Right click it and untick any of the options AntiVir Guard enable, Antivir Webguard enable, and Antivir Mailguard enable, that are present.
    • You should now see a closed umbrella on a red background (looks like this: Image )
The AntiVir Guards are now disabled.
Post the log in your next reply, and then Reenable your AVIRA protection software
