Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Let’s get the internet working first. Let me know on your next post if the connection is fine after doing the following.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:50370
    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\DOCUME~1\Chuck\LOCALS~1\Temp\dwm.exe
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [svchost] C:\Documents and Settings\Chuck\Application Data\Microsoft\svchost.exe

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

NEXT I would like you to restore your Proxy settings as they have been modified by malware and that's the reason why you can't connect.
To do this:
In Internet Explorer: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings >uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.

REBOOT COMPUTER

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please reply with:-
  • Uninstall list
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)

Your logs are looking surprisingly good considering you have had an infection; can you tell me what problems you are still experiencing? Have you run any particular tools?

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :folderfind
    PCSecurityShield

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Please reply with:-
  • System look.txt
  • New HJT log
  • Update on problems

I have not experienced any other problems with the computer. I can now freely use Mozilla Firefox or Internet Explorer and our email is working also without problems. I have not run any other tools. Thanks.

AV: The Shield Deluxe 2009 Antivirus

Is this something that you had installed at one stage?

Although the computer appears to be running well I would like you to run a couple of scans for me, to make sure there is nothing hiding.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.

Please reply with:-
  • MBAM log
  • New HJT log

We used the Shield Deluxe 2009 Antivirus program for about a year, then upgraded to Shield Deluxe 2010 Antivirus until we began having debilitating malware problems, then dumped it in favor of IT-recommended AVG Free 9.0.

Files Infected:
C:\Documents and Settings\Chuck\Application Data\Microsoft\stor.cfg (Malware.Trace) -> Not selected for removal.

Is there any reason you did not select the above for removal?

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log

I thought the instructions you gave me told me not to according to the following statement.......

"Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected."

Do I need to re-run the Malware Bites Anti-Malware remover again and remove this file before continuing with the latest measures?? Thanks.

The file not checked was not in C:\System Volume Information folder. :)

Not to worry, continue on with the rest of the instructions.

My bad on the faulty file name recognition..........must have been a rough day...........

I went through these steps until I tried to run ComboFix.exe. I tried to disable my AVG Free 9.0.869 and was unable to disable the E-mail scanner. I tried to run the ComboFix but it would not run due to AVG Free, giving me a message to uninstall it. I then tried to uninstall the AVG Free and was unable to. Where do I go from here?? Thanks.

Just disable the Resident Shield of AVG.

To disable the Resident Shield, please:

  • Open AVG User Interface.
  • Double-click on the Resident Shield.
  • Un-tick the option Resident Shield active.
  • Save the changes.

I ran this process previously after disabling the Resident Shield, and then ran it again as you instructed, with the same results. ComboFix would not run and it gave the following message:

"ComboFix cannot run when AVG is installed. This is due to AVG's targeting of ComboFix's files/processes. It would be dangerous to continue.
Please uninstall AVG or use another tool."

Thanks.

Ah ok, sorry crossed wires there for a bit :) Let’s do an online scan instead.

Is the computer behaving, any problems?

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

I ran ESET Online Scanner twice, found the same trojan infection both times, but was unable to save a log file that I could find with Notepad or Wordpad, and I did not write it down, which I could do after running ESET Online Scanner again if that is how I need to do it. I also tried to just select and copy the log but it would not copy. Thanks.
