Unread postby frerom » November 4th, 2010, 2:03 pm

Hi,
I'm worried my computer may be infected.
I tried installing the latest Hijackthis but was informed that there is something wrong with windows installer.
I am at a loss on what to do since Java reports they are still researching the error 1721.
Please help.

I'm worried my computer may be infected.
I tried installing the latest Hijackthis but was informed that there is something wrong with windows installer.
I am at a loss on what to do since Java reports they are still researching the error 1721.

Is this the only problem that you notice?

Hi Muppy03,

I also tried to install HJT 2.04 but received the message that windows installer has a problem.

During my investigation I tried Microsoft recommendation for unregistering and registering in safe mode, renaming the 3 msi files. I even looked at installing windows installer 4.5 but hesitated when it suggested backing up the register.

I also checked the hard disk and defragmented.

The only other problem I have is trying to update Adobe Flash so that Secunia doesn't report it as being insecure.

Info and log files follow.

Re: Unable to install Java opdate 6.21 and 6.22

Unread postby muppy03 » November 10th, 2010, 7:30 am

Is this computer used for business at all?

I see that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, did you run it at all?

but hesitated when it suggested backing up the register.

That is easy, let’s do it now.

Backup the Registry

  • Download ERUNT
  • Save it to your desktop. Right click on the downloaded file(erunt.zip) and click Extract.Follow the prompts to extract the file.
  • Now click on the folder "erunt" and find and double click on the file called Erunt.exe
  • Click OK. Then Click OK again.
  • Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

Dial-A-Fix

We need to repair some of windows' internal registration settings
  1. Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Extract the zip file to your desktop.
  3. Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
  4. Check the box "Fix Windows Installer", when you do this other boxes will automatically be checked, this is ok
  5. click on go
  6. Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Please reply with:-
  • Answer to questions
  • Update on problems
  • New HJT log

Quote "Is this computer used for business at all?"

I am retired for the last 2 years. I used to bring work home.

Quote "I see that you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, did you run it at all?"

Not lately. I used it about a year ago when I had an infection.

Re Dial a fix The Primary Mirror folder was empty so I used the Secondary Mirror.
I had 2 messages.
One saying that it couldn't determine the version of IE and another re hotkey restrictive policies. I saved the PRT screen and can send you the files if you want.

Re problems,
1.- I installed HJT v2.04 with the MSI file I previously downloaded and it installed with no problems.

2.- I haven't updated java yet. Do I need to install v21 and 22 or just the latest.

3.- The Windows Update icon appeared and there are 4 updates waiting to be installed. I'll wait until I hear from you before I install them.

4.- I just edited now to add what may be a related problem. I usually get a daily email with streaming video included. For about the past week or 2, I can not access the streaming video. All I see is a blank window (with a small square in the top left corner) where the streaming player should appear.

Re: Unable to install Java opdate 6.21 and 6.22

Unread postby muppy03 » November 10th, 2010, 11:41 pm

1.- I installed HJT v2.04 with the MSI file I previously downloaded and it installed with no problems.

:thumbright:

2.- I haven't updated java yet. Do I need to install v21 and 22 or just the latest.

Just the latest and you can remove via add/remvove programs this older version Java(TM) 6 Update 20

3.- The Windows Update icon appeared and there are 4 updates waiting to be installed. I'll wait until I hear from you before I install them.

They should be fine to install but let’s run a couple of scans first to make sure nothing is hiding.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Please reply with:-
  • MBAM log
  • Kaspersky log
  • New HJT log

Re: Unable to install Java opdate 6.21 and 6.22

Updated java successfully  after some trouble. Received error 1721 notification again and the computer seemed to get lost. I'd see the hard drive lite come on once in a while. I selected shutdown on the computer and waited. Previously I'd lose patience and press the power button. I did notice the cursor change to hourglass when I had it in the tray area. Finally after about 10 minutes the computer shut down. There was an error message but I didn't have time to read it. I tried the update again after disabling the anti virus, secunia and win patrol and this time the java update was successful.

I had no control over the windows updates. They installed when I shut down the computer last night.

I had to download a new version of Malware bytes. I downloaded it from one of the other posts.

Kapersky scan failed. Reported the license has expired. :?

MB and HJT logs follow.

Re: Unable to install Java opdate 6.21 and 6.22

Please try ESET for me instead. :)

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Thank you for your help to update java and check for malware.

Computer appears to be working fine. I took this oportunity to clear out some programs that Secunia was flagging. I did have a lot of trouble updating Adobe flash player but it does appear to be installed now. I had to use a manual install. I have attached a HJT log if you want it.

There is one issue that I am having that I can't resolve at the moment. I usually get a daily email which allows me to click to a blog with streaming video. For the past few weeks, I can not access the streaming video. All I see is a blank window (with a small square in the top left corner) where the streaming player should appear. I believe it has something to do with adobe flash player and IE 8. I have the videos showing in Mozilla Firefox. The latest flash player version 102.64 is installed.

Re: Unable to install Java opdate 6.21 and 6.22

Might be worth trying uninstalling using the Flash Player Uninstaller then re-installing. Make sure you Reboot after the uninstall. When you download, save the file to the desktop.

Manual Flash Player Uninstaller
http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flas ... player.exe

Manual Flash Player Installer

Let me know if it fixes the problem.

Sorry. It doesn't fix the problem. I believe IE 8 is the source of the problem. For some reason the player is not getting loaded or activated because of some settings or whatever.
When I uninstalled and reinstalled adobe flash player I also automatically uninstalled the adobe plugin for Firefox. So when I tried to view the content on Firefox it wasn't there but at least it said I needed to download the Flash Pugin. Once I did that the player appeared and I had to allow some company to store info on my computer and then I could watch the video. The Adobe global settings control states which company is storing the info on my computer.

I'll use Firefox for the next while if I need to watch the video blog. For now I'm happy. I only have 2 programs being flagged by Secunia for being out of date, none insecure.

Thanks again for your help with java. I really appreciate the timely and effective help offered at this site. Have a great summer. We are getting ready for winter.

Sorry that I have not solved that particular problem, you might be better served asking at a general tech help forum, where there will be folk who specialize in such problems. Below are a couple of sites that may be of help. :)

I would gladly swap our summer for your winter, would be a wonderful change. Where I am does not really get cold at all, no indoor heating needed ever. :(
