XP laptop virus warnings and anti virus offers to purchase

Unread postby scout61 » October 23rd, 2010, 2:32 am

I turned on the computer and was confronted with an Anti Virus warning with offers to
purchase anti virus software. I appears that all programs are infected as I cannot open any
programs, restore fails to run.

I am posting the results of the HIjackthis.log and the Uninstall_list program:

scout61,
Sorry for the delay. My fault. My original post didn't succeed and I didn't notice.
If you still need help, please proceed:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:29775
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [mbkbtcks] C:\DOCUME~1\User\LOCALS~1\Temp\mowqwtdgu\jdrugbxyhsn.exe
O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} -
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1BDE76F4-A04D-47BA-A2F9-48066E9C19AF}: NameServer = 93.188.164.36,93.188.160.106
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{ED38C0D1-74F1-4B33-B235-54DCC248BD5B}: NameServer = 93.188.164.36,93.188.160.106
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.164.36,93.188.160.106
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{1BDE76F4-A04D-47BA-A2F9-48066E9C19AF}: NameServer = 93.188.164.36,93.188.160.106
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.164.36,93.188.160.106

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Java(TM) 6 Update 18
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 22 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, (or right click and choose "Run as administrator") and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it shows any malware items, Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
.

Re: XP laptop virus warnings and anti virus offers to purcha

Unread postby scout61 » October 28th, 2010, 11:10 pm

Hi askey127,
Thank you for your help!
I have completed the following, per your instructions:
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis.
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment.

However; I cannot seem to get this Malware program to run.
I have purchased a copy of Malwarebytes, but with the same result.
I click on the Malware icon and it darkens, just like it is about to launch, but
no go. Then the icon just lightens-up as though it was canceled. Before this
the Malwarebytes came up with its own page with available selections.
I have a email to the Malware support folks about my trouble, but have not heard back from Malware yet,

The good news! I can now get to the internet! It does take some time but will get to the web.
I am using firefox as by browser.

Progress, Thanks, What to do next?

scout61,
You have been suffering from an infection called Wareout, which sends all your internet connections thru a server in the Ukraine. Some data on your PC may have been stolen.
Take precautions about any financial (credit cards, banking, etc.), or other critical data that may have passed through the machine by changing accounts, passwords, etc..

You can't get away with having no active antivirus.
If there is not too much damage, we should be able to get Malwarebytes to run later.
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download and run the tool named Rkill, which may help in allowing other programs to run.
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run one of the other ones.
You only need to get ONE of these to run, not all of them.
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
Rkill.exe
RKill.com
RKill.scr
Rkill.pif
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If ir does not, delete the desktop entry. Then download and use the one provided in the next link.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
------------------------------------------------
Scan with exeHelper:
Download exeHelper and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com - your desktop, and should open at the end of the scan)
  • Please post the contents of the log.txt file in your next reply.
  • Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).
-----------------------------------------------
Download Antivir Free
This program is free for personal, non-business use.
Download AntiVir Free from here : http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml
Save the Installer to your desktop, but don't run it yet.
-----------------------------------------------
Run, Update, Scan with Antivir
Double Click the Avira Antivir Installer on your desktop, Install the program, Have it update itself, and run a full scan.
Have it fix anything it finds.
-----------------------------------------------
Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
There wil be reports titled Update and reports titled Scan. Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display Report.
The report contents will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.

Due to Lack of Response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
