Hi there,
I have had similar problems as others on this forum. My browser frequently redirects to random search sites. I have done scans with AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials but there are still issues that neither can remove. MSE found rootkit - Alureon.H...on it's last scan.
Occasionally my browsers cannot open any pages at all so I have to restart and then they seem to work. I also have gotten weird pop up messages such as this:

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
...when nothing of the sort is open

I know just enough about this sort of this to really mess things up so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
My name is Airscape and I'll be helping you with your malware issues.
The logs can take a while to research. Please be patient with me.

Take note of the following before we begin.
  • Post to this thread only and please stick to it until you are given an All Clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that your computer is clean.
  • The instructions I give are for This computer only and should not be used on any other pc.
  • Do NOT run any tools/scans unless I instruct you to.
  • Try not to install/uninstall any programs while we work. This will add extra time researching your logs.
  • If you have found assistance elsewhere and no longer require our help, please say so, and this topic will be closed.
  • If you have any problems, please stop and ask before proceeding with any fixes.
  • ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST

Note: As I'm still in training here at MRU everything I post must be checked by a teacher first. So there may be a slight delay in between posts.

Important:
Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any important files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Hi nordicgirl,

Step 1 - Multiple Anti-virus Programs
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti-virus programs running in memory at once:

    AVG 9.0
    Microsoft Security Essentials

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer.
Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.
Please remove one of them NOW.

(It looks like you have the paid version of AVG so I recommend keeping that one, and uninstalling Microsoft Security Essentials, but your choice)

Uninstall via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

I also recommend that you uninstall RegVac Registry Cleaner 5.01 (Trial Version)

I'm not a fan of "Registry cleaners" personally, so I recommend that you uninstall it.
(if it does work, you won't notice the difference. If it does not work correctly you can end up with an unbootable machine)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Step 2 - Fix HijackThis lines
Run HijackThis and click on scan
Place a tick next to the following lines (if still present)

Please Note: Only check these items listed below!
(many entries listed in a HJT log are necessary for the operation of your pc)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [nbubfpxu] C:\Documents and Settings\Ingrid Granlin\Local Settings\Application Data\bagvpt\iswgsysguard.exe
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.163.74,93.188.166.109
    O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.163.74,93.188.166.109
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.163.74,93.188.166.109

Close all open windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Click Yes when prompted
Close HJT and Reboot (Restart) the computer

Additional Notes

If you have problems with your internet connection after running the above fix:

  • Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
  • Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.
  • Under the Networking tab double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
  • Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

-------------------------------------------------------

Step 3 - TFC(Temp File Cleaner)
  • Please download TFC to your desktop.
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in bottom left of TFC.
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted.
It should not take longer than a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

----------------------------------------------------------

Step 4 - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end of installation make sure you leave a checkmark next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy/paste the log into your next reply.
  • The log can also be opened by going to Start > All programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > Log- date.txt

Note: Some infections will prevent MBAM from running. If MBAM won't run, try renaming the file mbam-setup.exe to a random name, then try again.

Restart the computer

--------------------------------------------------------------

Once the above steps have been completed and the pc restarted, please continue with the following:

Step 5 - Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)
  • Please download RSIT by random/random from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two text files will open.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of both log.txt (will be maximized) and info.txt (will be minimized)

Note: both logs can be found in the C:\rsit folder if you lose them.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Logs/information to post in next reply:
Please post the following in your reply - Use seperate posts if you prefer
  • MBAM log
  • Both RSIT logs (log.txt & info.txt)
  • An update on how the pc is running?

Thanks

Thanks so much Airscape.
It seems to be running much faster but it is still jumping to random sites occasionally when I search. If it continues I will post again.

Sorry for the delay.

Backdoor Warning
Your computer has multiple infections, including a Backdoor.
A backdoor is a software program that gives an attacker unauthorized access to a machine and the means for remotely controlling the machine without the user's knowledge.
A backdoor compromises system integrity by making changes to the system that allow it to by used by the attacker for malicious purposes unknown to the user.
Typically it's installed without user interaction through security exploits, and can severely compromise system security.
Such infections may open illicit network connections, use polymorphic tactics to self-mutate, disable security software, modify system files, and install additional malware.
These backdoor infections may also collect and transmit personally identifiable information, without your consent and severely degrade the performance and stability of your computer.
A backdoor infection can give intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, obtain passwords, steal personal information, etc.

Further info on backdoor trojans: http://www.symantec.com/security_respon ... 09-0911-99

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft
and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords
(ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, any online activity you perform, requiring a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again.
Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan,
the best course of action would be to do a reformat and re-installation of the operating system (OS).
This decision will have to be made by you...

We can attempt to clean this machine but we will not guarantee that it won't still be compromised, afterwards.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:
When should I re-format and reinstall my OS
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
How and Where to backup your files
Restoring your backups

Please let me know how you would like to proceed.
Thanks
