Need help with Email virus

Unread postby wakeboarder540 » September 26th, 2010, 1:34 am

Hi, on my family's home computer I was having trouble with an email virus, I tired to fix it myself. I wanted to check with you guys to see if its all clean now.
My dad said his email address on hotmail.com was sending out a message to everyone in his address book with an almost blank page and a silly link to a website at the bottom.

So to fix the problem I restored to an earlier restore point, Deleted files with ATFcleaner, got the newest firefox version, uninstalled some junk in windows (couldn't get a few things though like trojan remover was missing files to uninstall and like wise for spy-bot search and destroy. but the trojan remover is still kinda installed though cause you can still see it in a menu when you right click a file "scan with trojan remover") I ran avast free anti virus in windows and the startup scanner, didn't find anything. We tested loggin into hotmail to see if it would send them but doesnt seem to be doing it but I want to be sure.

I'm so thankfull for your awesome help you have provided me in the past, and would appreciate a bit of help to make sure its clean. Thank you so much!

heres the HJT and uninstall log:

Hello wakeboarder540,
My name is Airscape and I'll be helping you with your malware issues.
The logs can take a while to research. Please be patient with me.

Take note of the following before we begin.
  • Post to this thread only and please stick to it until you are given an All Clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that your computer is clean.
  • The instructions I give are for This computer only and should not be used on any other pc.
  • Do NOT run any tools/scans unless I unstruct you to.
  • Try not to install/uninstall any programs while we work. This will add extra time researching your logs.
  • If you have found assistance elsewhere and no longer require our help, please say so, and this topic will be closed.
  • If you have any problems, please stop and ask before proceeding with any fixes.
  • ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST

Note: As I'm still in training here at MRU everything I post must be checked by a teacher first. So there may be a slight delay in between posts.

Important:
Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any important files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Thanks, I appreciate the help :D

So last night I downloaded and ran the malwarebyte anti malware software from this site and scanned computer and got like 12 infections cleared out then ran again full scan and didnt find anything, sorry this was before you posted and I was thinking it was worth a shot seing as the hotmail virus sending got worse ( now it sends even if the computer isnt on apparently) which is making me think perhaps someone compromised my dads account so we changed his account pass to a much stronger one. if someone hasnt got my dads account cracked then thats really bad cause that would mean that the virus is in hotmails server or in my modem right? Cause how can our computer be sending out ads-emails with a virus while the computer is turner off??? but then again my dad is the one who said it was turned off the times the messages said they were originally sent from (but maybe my dad left it on and forgot he tunred it on in the morning sort of thing, I dont know)
Sorry for any inconviences this may have caused you if you would like me to repost a new log/logs let me know

thanks again

Sorry for the delay.

Can you please post the log from Malwarebytes showing infections found?
The log can be opened by going to Start > All programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > Log- date.txt

So we have a current registry backup, please do the following:

Backup the Registry:
  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say NO to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\todays date which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes System registry and Current user registry are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the backup folder.

Note: to restore the registry (if needed) goto the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

--------------------------------------------------

Please download DDS ... by sUBs.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds/
Save it to your desktop. Alternate download link:here.
  1. Double click the tool to run it.
  2. A black Screen will open... read the contents but do nothing.
  3. When DDS finishes... Notepad will open with 2 reports... DDS.txt and Attach.txt
Ignore the comments about zipping / attaching any of the report files. The 2 report files are not saved anywhere,
if you close Notepad, before copying /pasting them... you will need to run DDS again.
  4. Copy/paste both DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply.
  5. Once the reports have been posted, you can delete DDS from your desktop.

So please post back with the Malwarebytes log and both DDS logs.

Thanks

Hi wakeboarder,

What are your reasons for using Hamachi 0.9.9.9?

Please download This Tool and save it to your desktop.
Double click MGADiag.exe to run it.
Click Continue. The program will run, please be patient.
Click Resolve Now (if available) and follow the prompts.
Once done, click on Copy then Paste the contents into your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------

Download CKScanner by askey127 from here: http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/CKScanner.exe
Important - Save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
A message box will verify the file saved.
Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Post back with the MGADiag.exe log, the CKFiles.txt log, and let me know what problems you still have.

Thanks

Ok sorry about the wait, hit a road block unfortunately... did not pass WGA check,
I got this computer given to me with it installed, it would seem with a non legit version :(

Where can I go to buy a legit XP pro digital license, I would like to purchase just the
license so I dont have to reinstall windows? Please advise me what to do to get a genuine license

Oh and I had hamachi installed to LAN with friends to play LAN PC games over the internet for some oldschool PC games that only would work if you were locally connected like at a lan party, hamatchi makes a virtual LAN so we could play over the internet
deleted it seeing as I dont use anymore
heres those logs:

Unfortunately, as you have determined your OS is not genuine and neither is your Office.
Until this is rectified I will not be able to continue helping as per Forum Rules and this thread will be closed.

Please visit:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/

Click on Validate Windows. Then when validation fails - click on Get Genuine to find out how to get a WGA Kit.

Once you've made your operating system and your version of Office genuine, and if problems still persist you are more than welcome to start a new thread requesting assistance.

This topic is now closed.

If you still require help, once you've made your operating system and your version of Office genuine please open a new thread in the Malware Removal forum, include a fresh HijackThis log, and wait for a new helper.

If you have been helped and wish to donate to help with the costs of this volunteer site,
