Connection issues with Vista, possible malware?

Unread postby Transien » September 17th, 2010, 11:14 pm

Recently, I've developed a problem which keeps me from connecting to the internet properly. Windows Update works fine, but Sypwareblaster, Firefox, Avast, and Adaware cannot connect. IE is hit and miss, with more sessions lately that will not work. At first I suspected a firewall issue, but after manually entering an exception for Adaware into Windows Firewall, I still couldn't update. I cleaned out my system recently using Ccleaner (after connection issues began, but before IE quit completely on me), and went through my uninstall list and removed several add-on toolbars:

Bing Toolbar
Google Toolbar
Yahoo Toolbar
MyWebSearch Toolbar

The last one is what worries me. I know there are programs that, when uninstalled incorrectly, will break a computer's internet connection. Is MyWebSearch one of them? If not, is there anything in my Hijackthis log that looks suspicious?

Thanks!

Darrel

Hello Darrel,

Please do not make any further changes to you're system unless i tell you to do so..
Please advise me if you have tried any other fixes while you were waiting for help.

Now:

Vista Advice:
  • All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.
  • The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC).
  • When prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Security Check

  • Please download Security Check by screen317 from:
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click SecurityCheck.exe And select " Run as administrator " , then follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
  • Please post the contents of that document.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.

  • Right-click ATF-Cleaner.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Next.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe And select " Run as administrator " then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Now:

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

Please download RSIT by random/random... and save it to your desktop.
  • Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
  • The first one, "log.txt", << will be maximized
  • The second one, "info.txt", << will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Now:

Please post:
Any fixes you attempted,
the checkup.txt, Mbam.txt, and the two Rsit logs.

Thank you,

Tequesta

Tequesta,

Here are the logs you requested. As for changes I've made, I ran a scan with Spybot and found a few traces of MyWebSearch and PlaySushi and removed them. I also tried a winsock fix using netsh winsock reset and resetting my TCP/IP Stack with netsh int ip reset. Neither yielded any results. As it stands, IE still freezes and crashes anytime I use it, and nothing can connect to the internet except windows update.

Correction!

I spoke too soon about Windows Update being the only process that can connect to the internet. Though my antivirus cannot connect, and I had to manually update Malwarebytes, I doublechecked and realized that Adobe can update just fine, as can Apple Software Update, both programs that were installed prior to all these troubles.

Hello Darrel,

First thing I would like you to do is to turn Word Wrap off in Notepad:
  • Open Notepad then on the Toolbar click Format.
  • Make sure Word Wrap is unticked then close Notepad.

Now:

Scan With RKUnHooker

  • Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  • Now right-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • * This can take a while. Please be patient *.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of this log in you're next reply.
  • This log can be lengthy you may have to post it in separate replies.
  • Note: You may get the following warning - it is ok - just ignore it:
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Please post the RkUnhooker log.

Thank you,

Tequesta,

As for your questions, I have turned off Word Wrap in notepad. If this is regarding the strange doublespacing in the forum, my only explanation is that I am uploading using a Linux box, since the Windows laptop is broken, and something is getting all garbled. I'll try to remove the extra spaces to make the logs more readable.

I am indeed using a DSL router to access the internet, but I have two other computers using the same router with no issues. The broken computer, however, is a new addition. I will try to dig up the default password for my router and see if there are settings that are preventing access. Unfortunately, I am not really sure what the password is. Perhaps I'll take the broken computer to a public Wi-Fi spot and see if it works there. What do you think?

Before I get to my Hijackthis log, I want you to know that I couldn't find C:\Windows\System32\drivers\dmlj.sys anywhere.

I made sure that I could view hidden files and folders, but didn't see anything. I also tried using Vista's search function, but to no avail. Sorry.

Here is my log. Notice that, even though I removed the R0 entries, they are back again.

Hello Darrel,

Would you please clarify the status of your computer. Is it able to connect intermittently, or is it unable to connect to the internet at all?

There is a little button on the back of the router that will reset it to the default settings. If you got the router from your ISP, they will be able to provide you with the default password and will assistance you if need.

SystemLook

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

Please remember to run as an administrator
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *dmlj.sys*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Thank you,
