Malware virus Issues

Unread postby chips13 » September 12th, 2010, 7:09 pm

I recently was misfortunate enough to be a victim of the antimalware doctor virus. After reading several sources of information during the brief few times I could actually get online...I sourced some programs which were recommended so as to eradicate my computer of this virus...I then transferred them to my laptop, from my brother's laptop via usb but the virus would not allow them to run...it shut down most systems so eventually I had to just restore my laptop to factory settings and cut my losses. I restored via keys at the start up as my computer was refusing to boot at that stage.

Now my computer seems to be running fine, except for the hourglass on the mouse which appears every few seconds and lasts for a few seconds, accompanied by a slowing of the computer during these moments. Now after the virus mishap I tried Vipre antivirus software and have ran a scan, which found a few issues but no major threats to the system...I also on the recommendation of a friend ran MalwareBytes which found two registry errors but the problem has still not been solved...I then ran RegCure to see if it was a registry error and it found a few problems but still the hourglass keeps flashing...

On other suggestions I've ran Emisoft Scanner, which simply highlighted RegCure as an issue and removed it...I then ran SuperAntispyware which located some cookies but nothing serious...

I have no idea what could be the issue so any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks guys!

Hi chips13,
All those delays, etc. are a necessary result of Microsoft trying to update your system with Service pack 3 and hundreds of updates.
If it requests to install Internet Explorer 8, allow it.
It all NEEDS to happen.
Meanwhile, you have some corrections that also need to happen:
-----------------------------------------------
Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=491394#p491394
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P program BitComet in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time.
If you have used this, you can be fairly confident this is a principal reason your computer is infected

It's really important, if you value your PC at all, to stay away from P2P file sharing programs, like utorrent, Bittorrent, Azureus, Limewire, Vuze, Shareaza, Bitlord.
Criminals have "planted" thousands upon thousands of infections in the "free" shared files. Some of the recent infections can turn your machine into a doorstop.
It's also very important to avoid any "cracks" or "Keygens" that allow unauthorized use of programs. Besides being illegal, these files also are loaded with "planted" malware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
Adobe Reader 6.0.1
Search Assist
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
BitComet 1.23

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, (or right click and choose "Run as administrator") and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.33 are vulnerable.
Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr933_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis (double-click in XP, or right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl +A), copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the log contents into a reply.

chips13,
------------------------------------------------
Download and Run Rkill
Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double click on Rkill. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7).
  • A command window will open, then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue. If you cannot get one of the downloads to work for you, try one of the other links.
If you cannot get Rkill to run without being stopped, don't proceed further, and post back to tell me about it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any "Scan" log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
  • You can now delete the installer icon, named mbam-setup.exe from your desktop.

Let me know how it goes.

Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.
Ran as Colin on 13/09/2010 at 20:49:20.

Is this normal?

Fantastic...well below is the MalwareBytes Log. Nothing was found. I have, on your advice, allowed the new internet explorer to install, the Microsoft Service Pack and a few updates have also installed. I take it I can expect to be updating for a while?

chips13,
The machine will probably update a few files for a couple more days.

Let's clean out any junk that accumulated during the removals and update process.
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run Temp File Cleaner (TFC.exe)
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and Run as Administrator in Vista)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.

You can keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Temp File Cleaner.
I would run a scan with each of them every few weeks.
You do not need any additional Antivirus or AntiSpyware programs on there. In fact you should have exactly ONE of each; no more.

After the updates calm down, I would have Norton AntiVirus do a complete scan and allow it to remove anything it finds.
Be sure to keep your Norton subscription up to date.
If you ever decide to change Antivirus programs, be sure to uninstall the old one when you Install the new one.

Also after the updates calm down, you can defragment your hard drive (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter).
Highlight drive C: and click "Defragment". It may take a while, so some Users let it run overnight.
You don't need to do it very often, but it's useful after so many system changes.

Once everything seems to be the way you want it, be sure to make an image of the whole hard drive using Norton Ghost, if you have an external drive on which to save the image. You would need to save the image to an external drive like a Western Digital Passport or similar

Absent any strange behavior, you should be good to go.

I ran the Temp File Cleaner, which didn't locate that much but considering its a fairly fresh hard drive after I cleared the computer. The hourglass is still flashing but I take it this will desist when the updates are finished?

I shall defragment the hard drive in a few days when the updates have stopped.

Thanks a lot for the help, it's greatly appreciated.

chips,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: Browser Address Error Redirector - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\BAE\BAE.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ECenter] "c:\dell\E-Center\gtb.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSKDetectorExe] C:\Program Files\McAfee\SpamKiller\MSKDetct.exe /uninstall
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
<==If you don't use MSN messenger, check this one also
Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Open Internet Explorer
Click on Tools in the top menu, and choose Windows Update
Let it check for available updates.
If it comes up with anything, Choose Express Install and let it finish

Now let me know about the hourglass behavior

Hey askey127,

I did as you asked, keeping the msn one because I use msn messenger quite a bit...and it seems to have worked fantastic...the hourglass has vanished and there are no cpu spikes...what do you think the cause was because I would like to prevent this in the future?

Thanks for your time and excellent work, I really appreciate it!

These two are most likely:
It may have been the McAfee registry entry trying to start a non-existent file.
The registry entry should have been removed by the McAfee utility, but they are kind of sloppy.

It also could have been the first entry (BAE.dll).
Can't tell for certain.
