Re: Virus or Trojan problems

Unread postby jmw3 » September 10th, 2010, 1:40 am

Hello & Welcome to Malware Removal

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this ensure Notify me when a reply is posted is ticked on the POST A REPLY page.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • It will require more than one round to properly clean your system. Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! even if symptoms seemingly abate.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.
If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Thanks

DDS
Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links & save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply
Gmer
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here & save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

NOTE: If you cannot run GMER as indicated above, save a scan from the initial startup scan.
  • Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed & no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan
  • Double click the gmer.exe file
  • The program will begin to run & perform an initial scan. If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan. Click No
  • After the "initial scan" is complete, click on the Save button, save the log file to your desktop & post it in your reply

Re: Virus or Trojan problems

Unread postby rockspaz » September 10th, 2010, 6:33 am

Hello and thank you for the help!
I am getting messages that Ad Watch Live is blocking svchost.exe from going to websites.

I encountered a problem with gmer. I got error code oxc0000034. Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key. The gmer scan started but stopped before completing. ????????????????

Here are the dds logs:

Hi

Some more homework for you while I go through these other logs:

Disable Ad-Aware's Ad-Watch
  • Start Ad-Aware
  • Click the Ad-Watch tab
  • Click the Settings button
  • Ensure all highlighted options below are unchecked:(some settings may be used or changed only in the Pro version)
      Under the General tab
      Processes Protection
      Registry Protection
      Network Protection
  • Under the Detection Layers tab:
      Spyware heuristics
      AntiVirus engine
  • OK your way out, & close the main Ad-Aware window
  • Shut down Ad-Aware & Ad-Watch Live! by right clicking on the system tray icon, and selecting Exit Ad-Aware
  • OK the change
Leave Ad-watch disabled until we're done.

Rootkit Unhooker
Download Rootkit Unhooker from Here & save it on your desktop.
  • Disable your security programs
  • Double click RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan
  • Check Drivers and Stealth Code, uncheck the rest, then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked then click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished then go File > Save Report
  • Save the report somewhere you can find it such as your desktop then click Close
  • Copy/paste the entire contents of the report & post it in your next reply
Note - You may get the following warning - it is ok - just ignore it:
"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Hi

TFC (Temp File Cleaner)
Download TFC (Temp File Cleaner) by Old Timer Here & save it to your desktop.
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC Cleaner will close all open application windows
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program, your desktop will temporarily disappear
  • If prompted, click Yes to reboot
Note: Save your work.. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take any longer than a couple of minutes & may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

TDSSKiller
Download TDSSKiller.zip & save it on your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your Desktop
  • Double-click the TDSSKiller Folder on your desktop
  • Important!: Run this fix once and once only
  • Double click TDSSKiller.exe then click Start scan
  • A box will appear saying System scan completed
  • If any Malicious objects are found, click the default action Cure > Continue > Reboot now
  • If any suspicious objects are detected the default action will be Skip, ensure Skip is selected then click Continue
  • A log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0 10.09.2010
  • To find the log click Start > Computer > C:
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply
ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations (DO NOT download ComboFix from anywhere else but one of the provided links):
Link 1
Link 2

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Re: Virus or Trojan problems

Hello,

I ran the TDSS Killer but I am not able to find the log file on the C drive, even after doing a search. I can't find the progam either.

I'm not sure how to save the programs to my desktop. When I double click the exe file, it only gives me the option to click "save" and then it opens the program.

I disabled the antivirus and antispyware and firewall

I ran Combo Fix and it loaded the Windows Recovery Module and started the scan but it crashed with a blue screen message stating Bad_Pool_Caller

Please advise.

Thanks

What web browser are you using to download - Internet Explorer, Firefox, something else?

View Hidden Files & Folders Windows XP
To view Hidden Files & Folders do the following:
Click Start
Open My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Select the View Tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm
Click OK

See if you can find the TDSSKiller log now.

Try running ComboFix after booting your computer into Safe Mode. If ComboFix needs to reboot the computer, make sure you boot back to Safe Mode to allow it to finish & produce it's log. Once you have the log, then boot back to Normal Mode.

I"m using Firefox for the downloads. I followed your instructions for showing hidden files but I still can't find the SDSSKILLER log. I did have to reboot after I ran the scan. When I do a search on the C drive, it says it can't locate because it is not indexed.

I'm trying to run ComboFix in safe mode now.

Hi

I notice your downloading things I ask you to to:
c:\documents and settings\Laptop\My Documents\Downloads
& not the desktop. Look there for TDSSKiller. There are reasons we ask you to save the files to the desktop. First things are easy to find & second, most of the tools we use are designed to run from the desktop.

So having said that, please move ComboFix from the Downloads folder & place it directly onto your desktop. Hopefully now you should be able to run the following ComboFix instruction from Normal Mode. If not boot back to Safe Mode as before, then Normal Mode for the Kaspersky Online scan.

CFScript
Close any open browsers.
Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code box below into it:

Code: Select all
Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=dword:00000000
DDS::
Trusted Zone: internet
Trusted Zone: mcafee.com
DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0012-ABCDEFFEDCBA} - hxxp://java.sun.com/update/1.5.0/jinsta ... s-i586.cab

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
If prompted by ComboFix to update, please do so
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
  • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, & also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 21.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Here
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs & remove all older versions of Java
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel
Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply
Pictured tutorial if required.
This scan will take quite some time to update & scan, so be patient with it.

I went to c:\documents and settings\Laptop\My Documents\Downloads but TDSSKiller is not there. Could it have a different name?

I tried to drag Combofix onto the desktop but it only added a shortcut. Again, when I download a program and click on exe, it is not giving me an option to save it to a location. It only give me a "run" option. How do I get it to save to desktop instead of the default folder? I'm using Firefox.

Also, a Windows Patrol message came up saying it detected a change to the rundll32.exe and is asking if this change is OK. I had disabled during the combofix run but it started running with the restart. Is this from the combofix change or something else? Is this change ok or not?

I'll wait to hear back before I do your above instructions.

Hi

With regard to Firefox - There's two ways you can change the download location. This first way is the easiest:
  • In the task bar at the top of the screen, click Tools then Options
  • Click the General tab
  • Under Downloads, click the save files to radio button then click Browse. Brows to your Desktop & select it, then click OK
Alternatively, you can choose the Always ask me where to save files option.

I tried to drag Combofix onto the desktop but it only added a shortcut.
What about right-clicking on the ComboFix icon, choosing copy, then choose paste on your desktop.

Also, a Windows Patrol message came up saying it detected a change to the rundll32.exe and is asking if this change is OK.
Did WinPatrol give any information on what is trying to change it? A lot of files call it.

I changed the setting in Firefox to always ask me where to download. Thanks.

I was able to move Combofix by right clicking on start and then went to explore and then dragged it to the desktop.

As for WinPatrol, I think it spotted a change from: C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe C:\Windows\System32\ieframe.dll, Open URL % A change was make to use the following program: rundll32.exe ieframe.dll, Open URL %
WinPatrol is asking if this change is ok
