Google Redirect

Unread postby SDub2032 » September 3rd, 2010, 7:26 pm

Hi, a few days ago I had a problem on my computer, somehow a virus jumped on here. I managed to get into safemode and install
MalwareBytes Anti malware which found some stuff and deleted it. The computer was working okay for a while, I could download things and everything seemed okay. A day later, my wireless internet connection dropped down and became very slow and often unresponsive, I'm not sure if it's connected but when the ethernet cable is plugged in it is working fine.

At the same time, I noticed what I have since found out is a Google Redirect Malware. I've tried various things that I read online, I read something about the wdmaud file in Windows\System32 that is the problem, I followed some advice and used OTM to remove it and then ran Malwarebytes again, which found nothing, nor did SpyBot, however, when I looked again, the wdmaud file was back and my google redirect problem is happening again, although it doesn't happen every time I search.

I also followed some other advice on a forum and put a No-Script add-on to my firefox, however that doesn't seem to fix the problem with google.

I will post the Hijack this log and hope someone can help me. Also, if there are any other evident problems I am more than willing to listen to try to improve the laptop.

Thanks in advance

Hi SDub2032,

Welcome to the forum.

My nickname is deltalima and I will be helping you with your computer problems.

The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Uninstall List
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.

Hi SDub2032,

Download and run OTL
Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with OTL.txt and Extras.txt from the OTL scan into your next reply.

The GMER program did cause the computer to blue screen so I ran it in Safe Mode. Should I just stay in safe Mode for the rest of the process?

Hopefully the 3 files should be attached

Hi SDub2032,

Should I just stay in safe Mode for the rest of the process?

No, please keep to normal mode where possible.

Please paste future logs into your reply, do not attach as it makes them more difficult to read.

Please remove Spybot - Search & Destroy as it may interfere with the fixes, it can be reinstalled later if required.

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs,
highlight Spybot - Search & Destroy
    click Remove
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

TDSSKiller

  • Please Download TDSSKiller.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Extract (unzip) its contents to your Desktop.
  • Double-click the TDSSKiller Folder on your desktop.
  • Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe and click Copy then Paste it directly on to your Desktop.
  • Important!: Run this fix once and once only.
  • Double click the TDSSKiller icon on you're desktop then click Start scan.
  • A box will appear saying System scan completed.
  • If any Malicious objects are found click Cure > Continue > Reboot now.
  • A log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0 24.07.2010.
  • To find the log click Start > Computer > C:.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Hi SDub2032,

Please re-open HijackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6522
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Now close all other open windows and then click on Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

Please reboot the computer.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

MBAM says there is nothing there, as it has done on a few occasions while the redirect is still happening...but maybe it's actually not this time? I found and removed the three items before this scan with HijackThis

Hi SDub2032,

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.3 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE, UNCHECK any Free Add-Ons, and click Download to install the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • After it completes the Installation, close the Download Manager.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, & also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 21.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Here
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs & remove all older versions of Java
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u21-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply and also let me know how your computer is running now.

Hi, I thought things were running okay on the computer now, but after checking I see it's still doing the Google Redirect when I turn No Scripts off, when it's on, it's just not loading the Google search page. The wireless has stayed connected today though, before it was saying no signal or connected and being very very slow.

Here is the Kaspersky log:

Run Combofix

Temporarily disable any antispyware, antivirus and or antimalware real-time protection as they may interfere with running of ComboFix.

Download ComboFix from here to your Desktop.

For more information about Combofix please see here.

Close all programs.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it’s malware removal procedures, if not, then follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. Once installed, you should see the following message:

The recovery console was successfuly installed.
Click ‘YES’ to continue scanning for malware
Click ‘NO’ for exit

Click the YES button.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your “drive access” light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

When finished ComboFix will produce a log file. Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

Re: Google Redirect

Unread postby SDub2032 » September 6th, 2010, 1:03 pm

Hi, I did the two things. The first one I think removed some stuff, or did whatever it was supposed to, it then restarted the computer because it wanted to, when it rebooted, no log opened and I don't know where to find it. Here is the second log though, I think it finished and worked okay, when I looked it was on a blue screen saying something had not worked, I restarted and when it reopened it opened the program and the completed log:

Hi SDub2032,

Download SystemLook and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    winlogon.exe

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

We may need to copy an important system file from another computer; do you have access to another computer running Window XP Service Pack 2?
