Computer freezes

Unread postby Duojet » August 29th, 2010, 11:02 pm

My laptop isn't very old, less than 2 years. I don't use it for much, mostly just browsing, Youtube, and the occasional Facebook game. Now all of sudden it can't handle these things. As soon as I try to play a video it will get real slow and then freeze. I don't know much about computers but I've noticed the CPU will jump to 100%.

Help! Please:)

Hi Duojet,
Edit: Sorry, Deltalima and I got crossed up here answering your thread. I will go ahead with it from here on. -askey

Quite a lot to do here. Just take one step at a time. Let me know if you cannot do any of the steps.

You have TWO antivirus programs running at the same time.
This will actually reduce your protection, and cause system instability.
I will ask you to remove one of them below.
You should have only ONE antivirus program and ONE anti-spyware program running on your machine.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
Click on the Tools menu, click General Settings, Scroll down to Real-Time Protection Options section and Deactivate the Real-Time Protection system.

Then, in the toolbar across the top there is a little downpointing arrow next to the question mark icon.
Click on that, get a drop down list. One of the options is to exit Windows Defender.
Click on that, and there will be a pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit. Click Yes/OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE= ... io&pf=cnnb
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE= ... io&pf=cnnb

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus
--OR-- BitDefender Antivirus 2010 <== Uninstall just ONE of these, not both
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Spybot - Search & Destroy

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
If the Spybot Uninstaller asks whether you want to remove all files and settings, answer YES. If it reports it cannot remove everything, that's OK.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and Run as Administrator in Vista)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, (or right click and choose "Run as administrator") and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Right click on RSIT.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Default location for both files is C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

Okay, I've done everything. I encountered a couple of problems but I think everything worked out.

Spybot had a error pop up that said "Service 'SBSD Security Center Service' failed to uninstall with error: 'System Error. Code:1060. The specified service does not exist as an installed service"'
After a minute it appeared to work it out and finish uninstalling.

Bitdefender had a pop up that said, "Service 'Bitdefender Desktop Update Service' (LIVESRV) could not be deleted. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to remove system services."
I pressed retry a couple of times and it worked it out. It took me a few trys to get it to uninstall because it would start but then it would timeout?

Also, today my Avira went off for the first time. It said, "Malware Found: a virus or unwanted program 'TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen' was found in file 'C:\Windows\Temp\tmp0000369a\tmp00002d83"'. I clicked remove and it started scanning and when it was complete nothing happened except the same alert popped up. I tried the removal button several times but the same thing happened.

duojet,
---------------------------------------------
Symantec did not remove everything as it should. This is a common problem.
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says).
On your desktop, right click on Norton Removal Tool, choose "run as administrator", and follow the instructions.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entry:
(This line may be missing)

O23 - Service: Norton Internet Security - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.0.0.125\ccSvcHst.exe (file missing)

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and run OTM
Click here to download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTM.exe to run it. (Right-click and "Run as administrator" in Vista/Win7)
  • Copy the following code and paste it in the white space under Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved (below the yellow line at the bottom of the window).
    Code: Select all
    :files
    C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy
    C:\ProgramData\BitDefender
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\BitDefender
    C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]

  • Click the MoveIt! button
  • OTM will ask to reboot the machine. Please do so.
  • You can find the log as described below and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
    • Start Notepad (Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad)
    • In Notepad, click File, then click Open
    • In the File Name: box, type *.log then press Enter
    • Navigate to C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\ and locate the newest log and open it (they are named as {date}_{time}.log)
    • Copy the contents of the log and paste it in your next reply.

Duojet,
-----------------------------------------------
Run a Scan and Get Last Avira Report
Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir
Click on the Link labeled "Scan System Now"
When it finishes, have it remove anything it finds.
If necessary, Right click the red umbrella icon in the system tray and click Start Antivir again.
In the left pane, click Overview, then click Reports
There wil be reports titled Update and reports titled Scan. Find the most recent report in the list titled Scan
Click on the Report File button, or Right click the report and choose Display Report.
The report contents will come up in Notepad. Highlight the entire report (Ctrl+A) and copy to the clipboard (Ctrl+C).
Paste the contents (Ctrl+V) into your next reply.

Tell me how it's running.

Duojet,
A final check if you please. Let's see if there is anything else.
This typically takes 5-10 minutes to run, but may take longer on the first pass.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Click the browse folders button, then click on Desktop on the left as the location for the installer and click Save again. Close the dialog when the download is complete.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe.
  • Right click it, choose Run as administrator and Continue
  • Let it install where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. A shield symbol will show on the desktop icon while it is updating, and will disappear when it's done.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program has started up, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items, check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any "Scan" log listed to open its contents. The logs are listed and named by time/date stamp.

You can keep this Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and I would suggest you update it and scan with it every week or two.
You will not need any other Antivirus or Antispyware programs, so please don't install any.
You can convert to the paid version of Antivir if you wish. It does give better e-mail coverage. Your choice.

Also, NEVER, NEVER update or install a new "flash" or "codec" because one of the YouTube videos says to do it.

So just curious, what is the difference between the Avira and the Malwarebytes? Is the only advantage to buying Avira the email protection? A friend downloaded it for me so I don't know anything about it. The only email I use is yahoo, is it pretty safe?

Duojet,
The Avira application is a very thorough Anti-Virus program.
The paid version of it scans every e-mail going to and from your machine, in addition to its online surfing protections.
There are other free Antivirus programs that scan e-mail, but they have other shortcomings.
Avira runs on your machine all the time, and will detect if any website you visit tries to download any garbage onto your machine. Antivirus programs detect and remove known corrupted files.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is an Anti-Spyware application that scans for and removes adware, spyware, items that track your behavior, and other possibly unethical, but not necessarily Illegal, intrusions.
This program will remove items which are deceptive. An antivirus usually does not, but the distinction is becoming blurred to some extent. The free version of Malwarebytes only runs when you scan with it every week or two, so it finds things only after they are already on the machine.

The current wisdom is that you need exactly one antivirus and one antispyware application on the machine.

Yahoo e-mail is OK if you like it.
Most of the difference in e-mail sites relates to how well they filter out Spam before you get it.

No e-mail is safe if you click on underlined links that appear to come from friends, especially if they say things like "You gotta see this!"
"Wow is this hot" , etc.

Does that help a little?
