Problem:
IEXPLORE.exe keeps reloading itself and running in the background. I have run Malwarebytes program, I have McAfee running on the computer at all times, and have tried a-squared and a couple others to no avail. I can end the task in task manager but it simply reloads itself in seconds. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I can provide any other info necessary to get this solved. Thanks in advance.

earlycobra,
Your Windows operating system is in such a state, with totally inadequate updates, it's not a certainty it can be fixed without a complete Reformat and Re-Installation of Windows.
If you wish I will try.
Please do exactly what I ask, and don't install, remove or scan with anything else until we are done.

You have Limewire and a very old Java installed.
Either of those, coupled with the lack of protection from improperly updated Windows can turn your machine into a doorstop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Adobe Acrobat - Reader 6.0.2 Update
Adobe Reader 6.0.1
HijackThis 1.99.1
Internet Explorer Default Page
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 15
LimeWire PRO 4.10.0
MyWay Search Assistant

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
----------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner
Download Temp File Cleaner and save it to your desktop.
Double click to run it. (Right click and Run as Administrator in Vista)
If you have a lot of junk files to remove, it could take a while, so please be patient and let it finish.
When it's done, if it asks to Reboot, choose to do so. This will remove files that could not be removed while Windows was running.
After Restart, log back in to your usual account.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix
IMPORTANT NOTE: ComboFix is a VERY POWERFUL tool. DO NOT use it without guidance.
ComboFix uses very forceful tactics to remove malware from your system. Your antivirus software may warn you about the file.
You will need to disable all your antivirus software BEFORE running ComboFix.
.
  • Download ComboFix from here
  • Rename it while saving the download to zzz.exe and save it to your Desktop. Do not try to rename it after it has been saved to your desktop, or the infection may prevent you from using it.
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop, not from any other folder on your computer**
  • Disable ALL antivirus/antimalware programs before proceeding!
    DISABLE MCAFEE SECURITY CENTER
Please navigate to the system tray and double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center.
    • Click Advanced Menu (bottom mid-left).
    • Click Configure (left).
    • Click Computer & Files (top left).
    • VirusScan can be disabled in the right-hand module and set when it should resume or you can do that manually later on.
    • Do the same via Internet & Network for Firewall Plus.
  • Now start ComboFix (zzz.exe)
  • The tool will check whether the Recovery Console is present on your system. If it is not, ComboFix will prompt you whether you would like to install it.
  • If it is not, make sure you are connected to the internet as ComboFix needs to download a file. When you are connected to the internet, click Yes and follow the prompts. When asked whether to continue scanning or to exit, click Yes to continue scanning (no need to disconnect from the internet as ComboFix breaks your internet connection for you).
  • Do not touch the computer AT ALL while ComboFix is running.
  • When finished, the report will open. Reenable your protection software and post the log in your next reply
A copy of the log will be located here -> C:\ComboFix.txt
If you cannot connect to the internet after running ComboFix, unplug the cable you use to connect to the internet and plug it back in.

After you have posted the Combofix log, please re-enable your McAfee security software.

earlycobra,
Each time your machine boots up now you will briefly see a black screen with the Recovery Console as an option.
This allows a technician an extra avenue for repair in case of serious malfunction.
For normal operation, you can just ignore the screen and allow it to boot.

Be sure to re-enable your McAfee Security Center, if you haven't yet done so.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the latest version of Java Runtime Environment from here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
In the first section on the page, labeled JDK 6 Update 21 (JDK or JRE), click on the button labeled Download JRE. Do NOT choose the button labeled "Download JDK".
Select the Platform Windows and check the box to agree to the license.
Choose the Windows Offline installation version and click on the link.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it on your desktop, (or right click and choose "Run as administrator") and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.3 are vulnerable.
Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.[/list]
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT(RESTART) Your Machine
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
  • Start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click on The Update tab. Choose Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the Program and Database downloads have finished, (may take a while), Click on My Computer under Scan. Go for lunch. This will take a while. Don't interrupt it.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post the contents of this log in your next reply.

So we are looking for the log from Malwarebytes and the report from the Kaspersky scan.

earlycobra,
A few gremlins in there. Let's remove them.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Run a Script with ComboFix.exe (zzz.exe)
  • Open a new Notepad window (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad). Choose File, New.
  • Highlight the contents of the codebox below and press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard. Do Not copy the word "Code".
    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\Documents and Settings\Christopher Lott\My Documents\My Music\Other\ugk one day your here - greatest hits.wma
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\0.03451768341710737.exe
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\0.2632461735990167.exe

  • Paste the contents of the clipboard into the Notepad window by pressing Ctrl+V or Edit, Paste
  • Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

    Image
  • Now drag and drop the CFScript.txt icon onto combofix.exe (zzz.exe) as in the picture above, and follow the prompts.
  • Then post the resultant log, C:\ComboFix.txt, in your next reply.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Temp File Cleaner Again and allow it to Reboot
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download SP3 and Burn the Image to a CD
If you have a broadband connection, get the Windows XP Service Pack 3 download from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2fcde6ce-b5fb-4488-8c50-fe22559d164e&displaylang=en
It is an .iso image file, designed to be burned directly onto a CD using your CD burning software.
If that appears successful, unplug your internet connection, disable your McAfee Antivirus, and run Setup from the CD.
It may take 1-2 hours to install. It will include the Installation of IE8, which may require you to be present.

Let me know how it goes.
If you succeed, we will be ready for a final cleanup and protection setup.

Ok, I successfully completed all of the steps required thus far. The iexplore.exe program is still running in the background, although interestingly it was a capital I before and is now a lowercase "i". Whatever this virus/trojan is also changes the "wave" setting on my soundboard to zero, thus effectively muting my sound. I feel we have made some good progress though, let me know what to do next.

Thanks,
Chris

earlycobra,
Good. Please tell me the make and model of your PC, if it's available.
-----------------------------------------------
Download Bootkit remover to your desktop
This is a rar file. If you do not have a program to open it, then download and install Peazip

Extract Remover.exe to your desktop
Double click Remover.exe
It will show a Black screen with some data on it.
Right click on the screen and select > Select All
Press Control+C
Open a notepad and press Control+V

Post the resultant log here please
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next reply please.

Looking for the bootkit remover log, and the two logs from the RSIT Scanner. Use separate replies if you prefer.

earlycobra,
Read this carefully, please.
You have an infection in the Master Boot Record of your system disk.
------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT NOTE TO DELL USERS - fixing the MBR (Master Boot Record) may prevent access to the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. There are a couple of known fixes for said condition, though the methods are somewhat advanced. If you are unwilling to take the risk of not having the Dell Restore available, you should not allow this FIX to execute.

If you choose NOT to perform this Fix, you would then need to restore your computer to its original factory state using Dell Restore, OR allow your computer to remain having an infected MBR (the latter definitely not recommended), OR attempt an MBR repair using Dell support (see below).

It may be that the safest thing to do is contact Dell and ask for the best method to restore the Master Boot Record.
The Dell does provide an online instruction to fix a corrupted MBR. It is here if you want to evaluate it for difficulty or try it:
http://supportapj.dell.com/support/topi ... 8F5B280867

The procedure below installs a "Standard" MBR and there is also some risk it won't work on your machine at all, leaving it unbootable.

FIX PROCEDURE:
Click Start > Run, type Notepad and press enter.
Copy/paste the text in the Code box into Notepad and save it as fix.bat to your desktop.
Code: Select all
@ECHO OFF
remover.exe fix \\.\PhysicalDrive0
EXIT

Exit Notepad and double click fix.bat to run it. When done, your computer should reboot automatically.
When succesfully done and restarted, please double click on remover.exe, use the same procedure as you did originally, and post what is now shown under MBR status.

I have not used that restore feature in the entire time I've owned the computer, and I really don't see me using it in the future. Is there a workaround to restore the computer if the Dell restore gets deleted? I think I will probably just go ahead and do it, but let me know.

earlycobra,
If the Dell Restore gets deleted, and the machine gets in trouble or won't boot, the only recourse is the use of an imaging program which will restore any partition or entire disk exactly as it was. It must be put in place to make an image ahead of time.
If you own a Dell (or HP), it is the prime recovery method. You MUST use it before the disaster if you want the benefit.
(Dell and HP do not give a complete stand alone System disk for XP so you can reformat and re-install XP.)

An IMAGE allows you to completely recreate your hard disk if it becomes seriously corrupted.
These programs will put EVERYTHING back EXACTLY as it was when you made the image.

These provide the ONLY total recovery from severe infections or a corrupted Windows system.
If your hard drive still works, it will even fix a Windows system that won't Start.
You can save the image to multiple DVDs, or to an external Hard Drive.

Acronis True Image is here:

Norton Ghost is here:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/ghost

Terabyte Image for Windows is here:
http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-windows.htm
Terabyte Image for DOS is cheaper, and works on ANY system, but the interface is clunky.

If anything goes wrong with a FIX, the image recovery won't fix it, but will put it back.
