My neighbor called this morning - his computer keeps asking him to pay for cleaning his system. I told him to stop everything and I'd come take a look. Things don't look good. EVERY app you try to run gets the same message - the file is infected and do you want to clean things up.

I tried several ways to run HijackThis and finally had success booting into Safe Mode. Here is the log:

Re: Please Help : AV Security Suite

Unread postby xixo_12 » June 26th, 2010, 9:24 am

Hi,
Let's proceed.

First,
P2P software.
IMPORTANT: I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.
LimeWire 5.5.9

  • It's not a good idea to have them.
  • You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the P2P program(s) listed above.
  • If you do not wish to remove your P2P programs, don't proceed with the next instruction and please tell me to close this topic.

Next,
CKScanner.
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Double click on CKScanner.exe to run it and click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

What you need to post
Checklist.
  • Content of CKFiles.txt

Hi,
Please run in normal mode.

First,
Remove programs.
Please Click on Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove the listed program(s) by clicking Remove
Ask Toolbar

If some programs listed above are not in present, please do not panic and proceed to the next step.

Next,
Rkill
Please download from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:
One, Two,Three or Four
  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.
Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Next,
exeHelper by raktor
Please download from HERE and save to the desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Next,
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Run
  • Double-click Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to run the program.
  • Click on Update tab > Check for Updates.
  • Once done, click on Scanner tab, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    Image
  • Refer to above image and then click Remove Selected to proceed.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

What you need to post
Checklist.
  • Content of exehelperlog.txt
  • Content of MBAM log

I still cannot run any applications running in normal mode. I can open the Control Panel, but when I try to run "Add or Remove Programs" I get the following message: "Aplication cannot be executed. The file rundl32.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?" I did a shutdown.

I have been doing everything so far with the Administrator id. Should I switch to the normal user id in Safe mode?

Hi,

Please skip Remove programs. instruction.
Do the rest of instruction in normal mode. Don't try in safe mode. I would like to see how they try to defend.

The first two programs ran fine. Here is the exehelperlog.txt content:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware failed to open. I got an error message:

"An error occurred. Please report the following error code to the MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware support team: Error code: 730 (0,0)"

I did a search on their forums and found the solution is a re-install. It ran after the install. Here are the results:

Ok, I've finally finished the steps. GMER was a challenge. The first time it ran for about 3 hours and then the system rebooted. The second time it completed, but the system was locked up. I tried running in Safe Mode but the screen could display the whole app - I only saw the Ok and Cancel buttons and couldn't figure out how to scan. I went back to NOrmal mode and has success finally. Total time was about 8 hours. Anyway, here are the logs:

Hi,
Let's proceed.

First,
Remove programs.
Please Click on Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove the listed program(s) by clicking Remove
Adobe Reader 9.1.3

If some programs listed above are not in present, please do not panic and proceed to the next step.

Next,
Update Adobe Reader.
  • Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader.
  • It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.
  • You can download it from HERE

Note : Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3 instead from Foxit Software
Reminder : Do not install anything dealing with AskBar presented as an installation option.

Next,
Java is out of date.
It can be updated by the Java control panel
  • Click on Start > Control Panel (Classic View) > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update Tab > Update Now.
  • An update should begin.
  • Follow the prompts.

Next,
CCleaner - Clear temp.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the Windows tab, under Internet Explorer, uncheck Cookies if you do not want them deleted.
(If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the Options icon at the left side of the window, then click on Advanced. Untick Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Click on the Cleaner icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
Caution: It is not recommended that you use the Issues feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Next,
Kaspersky Online AV Scan
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next.

What you need to post
Checklist.
  • Content of Kaspersky scan log
  • Any other problem?

Everything ran fine except for the last step, the Kaspersky scan. After clicking Accept the download began and this message poped up:

"Launch of the Java Application is interrupted. Please establish an uninterrupted Internet connection for work with this program."

I don't understand the problem. I am on a broadband connection and am able to browse after the message appears. Is there some Internet Explorer timeout occuring?
