Redirecting Problem

Unread postby seth8888 » May 13th, 2010, 2:53 am

Hello, just a few days ago i noticed that i've began to have problems while surfing the internet. It all started when i noticed "Adobe has stopped working" while i was browsing the internet. After that, i began to get random redirecting problems where it would redirect me to a website saying that my computer may be infected with a malware and that i need to install some antivirus product, closing whatever website i was browsing and forcing me into this website.

I also would recieve a random pop up to some random advertisement website within intervals of roughly about an hour.

The other problem i suffer is that about 50% of the time while browsing through google search, it would re-direct me to random advertisement websites.

I use Windows Vista Home Premium.

I had downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware, but it did not detect or help at all. So now i require assistance if possible, and i would greatly appreciate any sort of help you guys can give me.
Edit: I have also installed norton 360 On saturday, May 15th, and it has detected and removed 10 viruses. However, the redirecting problem and the random 1 hour advertisement is still happening. (Computer is much faster after this though)

Here is my log from my Hijackthis.log, and my uninstall_list.txt following afterwards.

Hi and welcome to Malware Removal Forums., Sorry for the delay in answering your request for help.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Read Back up your files

please note the following important guidelines.
  • The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer, can damage that computer and possibly make it inoperable!
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • The logs from the tools we use can take some time to research so please be patient.

  • If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.

Vista Advice:
  • All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.
  • The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC).
  • When prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Remove P2P Programs

  • I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    Vuze

  • Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.
  • Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
  • Click on Start > All programs > Accessories > Run.
  • In the open text box copy/paste appwiz.cpl Then click Ok.
  • Uninstall the programs listed above (in red) and any other P2P you have installed NOW.
  • Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next.

Please post a new Uninstall list.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Next.

Run CKScanner

  • Please download CKScanner from Here
  • Important: - Save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click CKScanner.exe > select " Run as administrator " then click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Next.

  • Please download this tool from Microsoft.
  • Right click on MGADiag.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it.
  • Click Continue.
  • The program will run. It takes a while to finish the diagnosis, please be patient.
  • Once done, click on Copy.
  • Open Notepad and paste the contents in the window.
  • Save this file and copy/paste it in your next reply.

Unread postby Cypher » May 17th, 2010, 5:37 am

Hi seth8888.
Thank you for spending your time in helping out with this problem, i really appreciate it.

You're most welcome.
Please continue with the instructions below.

Please download GMER Rootkit Scanner from Here.
  • Right click the .exe file and chose Run as Administrator. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All << (don't miss this one)
See image below, Click the image to enlarge it
    Image
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in your next reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Next.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

Please download RSIT by random/random... and save it to your desktop.
  • Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
  • The first one, "log.txt", << will be maximized
  • The second one, "info.txt", << will be minimized.
Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • Gmer.txt log
  • RSIT log.txt and info.txt contents.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.

For the Gmer Rootkit scanner, it apparently is running into a problem during scanning. It would just scan for a while (15-25 minutes) then all of a sudden, the computer goes into a crash screen saying something about "protecting your hardware" due to errors, and then it restarts, so thus, i have been unable to finish the scan so far, which means i'm unable to save a Gmer.txt file as of right now.

I have ensured that IAT/EAT has been unchecked, all the drives besides C:\ drive has been unchecked (only C:\ drive has been checked, and the only other drive is the D:\ drive, which is unchecked.) I also ensured the Show all box has been unchecked as well.

Should i move on to the RSIT first or should i try the GMER rootkit scanner again? (This would be the 5th time running this if i were to run it again)

Hi seth8888.
It's important the we try to get the gmer scan to run so try this.
If successful post the gmer log in you're next reply.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Right click DeFogger And select " Run as administrator " to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Next.

Disable Norton 360

  • Right-click the Norton 360 icon in the system tray and select Open Tasks and
    Settings Window.

  • On the right side, under Settings, click on Change advanced settings.
  • Next, click on the Virus & Spyware Protection Settings.
  • Uncheck Turn on Auto-Protect and select Apply.
  • You will be asked to select a time for Norton to reactivate.
  • Choose Until I turn it back on.
  • Note: Dont forget to Re-enable it after the gmer scan

If you still have problems running gmer try running it in safe mode.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

I used the DeFogger and disabled norton 360, but it still ended up crashing. However, after the computer crash and restart and rebooting into safe mode, i managed to successfully run GMer's scan. I have not re-enabled DeFogger, but i have re-enabled norton 360 now.

Here is the GMer.txt log (saved while running the computer in safe mode)

Re: Redirecting Problem

Unread postby Cypher » May 19th, 2010, 6:14 am

Hi seth8888.

Your computer was infected with a ROOTKIT. In particular, the TDL3/TDSS rootkit, also known as Win32/Alureon. A rootkit is a set of software tools intended for concealing running processes, files or system data from the operating system.

Due to its rootkit functionality, it's impossible to tell what may have been done when the system was compromised.

Therefore it may be prudent to:

  1. Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts.
  2. Change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password)

What are rootkits from Wikipedia

How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it

This can prove difficult to remove so we will try the easiest way first.
Let me know if you're searches are still being redirected after this fix.

Ooh ok, good to know. There hasn't been much that i've done in terms of requiring passwords, but i'll go and change all of the ones i've been using just in case. Before i came to this fourm too, windows update ran a automatic scan and found something similiar too. When it finished scanning, it also said that my computer was infected with the Alureon.H virus, which matches up to what you said.

It doesn't seem like i'm getting anymore pop-ups anymore and the redirecting has stopped. Although it may be too soon to be cheering for victory and getting my hopes up, i feel like jumping around in joy right now. However,i'm not going to stop being vigiliant until the last second, so here's hopes to that this is the beginnning of the end of this nasty little bugger..!

Anyways, Here is the tdsskiller.txt

Re: Redirecting Problem

Unread postby Cypher » May 20th, 2010, 5:15 am

Hi seth8888.
It doesn't seem like i'm getting anymore pop-ups anymore and the redirecting has stopped.

Good let me know if you start having similar problems again.
We still have work to do so stay with me.

Fix HijackThis entries

Run HijackThis

If using Vista, you must right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
  • If you are on the Main Menu page... Click "Do a system scan only"
  • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Scan...button.
  • When the scan finishes...Place a check mark next to the following entries (if they are still present)
  • Note: Only check those items listed below.
    O1 - Hosts: ::1 localhost
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O23 - Service: nProtect GameGuard Service (npggsvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\GameMon.des.exe (file missing)

  • After checking these items... CLOSE ALL open windows except HijackThis.
  • Click the Fix Checked ...button...to remove the entries you checked.
  • Choose YES...when prompted to fix the selected items.

Next.

Download and run OTM

Download OTM.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click OTM.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Right-click then copy the following code, Do not include the word Code.
    Code: Select all
    :Services
    npggsvc

    :Files
    C:\Windows\system32\GameMon.des.exe
    C:\Program Files\Vuze
    C:\Windows\system32\GameMon.des

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]

    • Return to OTM, right-click then paste the code into the blank box below Image
    • Next click on the large Image button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Next.

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)

You should still have this program on your desktop.
  • Right-click on RSIT.exe And select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  • RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  • Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(This log can be lengthy, so a separate post may be needed.)

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • OTM log.
  • RSIT log.txt.
  • Please give me an update on your computers performance.
