Hello hangsterthemonster,

You have a serious Look2Me infection running of which we will take care but I would like to have additional information on 3 files. Please perform the steps below.

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
Search for Hidden or System Files

By default, the Search companion does not search for hidden or system files. Because of this, you may be unable to find files, even though they exist on the drive.

To search for hidden or system files in Windows XP:
  1. Click Start, click Search, click All files and folders, and then click More advanced options.
  2. Click to select the Search system folders and Search hidden files and folders check boxes.

The following file is probably related to Sony, but I wanna be sure
Submit the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VESWinlogon.dll to Jotti's scanner at:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Post the results here in the next reply.

Navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ folder and right-click on VESWinlogon.dll. Select Properties from the context menu that pops up, go to the Version tab, and get all the information you can from there (click on the individual Item Names under Other Version information so that you can see the details for each). Post that information here.

Thanks for checking those files hangsterthemonster, like expected the VESWinlogon.dll is related to Sony, as for the others I wanted to know their "real" status. :)

Please take note of the instructions that follow, print them out for reference as you won't be able to access this page while performing the fix.
Don't use the program yet.
______________________________

Please download WebRoot Spy Sweeper from the following location:
http://www.webroot.com/downloads/
  • Click the Free Trial link under Spy Sweeper to download the program.
  • Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it's safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)
  • Once the program is installed, you will be prompted to check for updated definitions, click Yes. This may take several minutes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, close the program and reboot your computer into Safe Mode
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Launch Spy Sweeper
    • From the left pane, click Options then Sweep Options
      • Check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives.
      • Check Local Disc C.
      • Under What to Sweep, check every box.
    • Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system. If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so immediately. This is a necessary step to kill the infection!
    • When the scanning is done, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next. It will remove all of the items found.
    • From Results, select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log to your Desktop or to a convenient location.
  • Exit Spy Sweeper.
______________________________

Reboot your computer in Normal Mode
  • Open the l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing the Enter key.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post the L2m log back here as a reply along with the Spy Sweeper log and a new HijackThis log please. You may need several replies to post the logs I did request, otherwise they might get cut off.

reply on scan instructions

Unread postby hangsterthemonster » November 5th, 2005, 10:35 pm

I have done all you told me. But, I couldn't find a 12mfix folder or a 12mfix.bat file on the desktop after rebooting in normal mode. I even tried searching it, but still it couldn't be found. However, step 1 of the scanning process was successfully completely and also a new HJT log was saved.

Thanks for the logs, I'll go over them and will post back. In meanwhile we really need the l2mfix.exe - note : that's L 2 and not 1 2 like you wrote in your post

Click Start > Run > type cmd and hit enter.

copy this line into the cmd window:

cd c:\ & dir /s l2mfix* > files1.txt & start notepad files1.txt

Right-click in cmd window and choose paste from the popup menu. Hit Enter
Give it a few minutes to run, search & results should come up in notepad. It should give you the folder were the l2mfix folder is located.

If you don't find it, download the program again please.
This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post the L2m log back here as a reply.

Hello hangsterthemonster,

Cool :) Let's move on then.

We need to disable some tools as they might intefer with the rest of the fix.

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware
  1. Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  2. Click on Options, Settings.
  3. In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  4. Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  5. Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  6. After you unchecked these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  7. Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware Icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
______________________________

Disable SpySweeper
  1. Open it and click Options over to the left then Program Options
  2. Uncheck Load At Windows Startup.
  3. Over to the left click Shields and uncheck all there.
  4. Uncheck Home Page Shield.
  5. Uncheck Automaticly Restore Default Without Notifiction.
______________________________

Print these directions or copy/paste them into a Notepad document and save it to your desktop. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • Open the l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing the Enter key.
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, Notepad will open with a log. Post that log along with any additional information as directed below.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the desktop icons don't dissappear or the log does not pop up, then in the l2mfix folder double click the second.bat file to continue with the fix.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite 3.5 from here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • When installing, under Additional Options uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you could get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click Ok.
  • The program will prompt you to update. Click the Ok button.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left-hand side of the main screen click the Update Button.
  • Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once finished updating, close Ewido.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates. Make sure to close Ewido before installing the update.
______________________________

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix. You MUST run this tool in Safe Mode or it won't detect anything.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido Security Suite, and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
    • Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
    • Under What to scan select Scan every file
    • Click on Ok
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report button
  • Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido and reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

Post the following logs please and I will review the information when it comes in.
  1. L2m log.
  2. the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
  3. Ewido log
  4. New Hijackthis log

Well done, the worst is over :)

Make sure that Microsoft Antispyware and Spy Sweeper are disabled before fixing the things below.

In the next step we are going to stop a and remove the following Service:

Click Start then Run
Type in services.msc
Click Ok

Scroll down and double click on the service called Command Service
Click Stop and then set the Startup Type to Disabled.

Now we will remove the Service from the Registry. Maybe all of the following entries wont be present. If you don't find a key, proceed to the next key.

Click Start then Run
Type in regedit
Click Ok.

In left pane of registry editor, Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cmdService
If cmdService exists, right click on it and choose Delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ cmdService
If LEGACY_cmdService exists then right click on it and choose Delete from the menu.

If you have trouble deleting a key, click once on the key name to highlight it and click on the Permission menu option under Edit. Uncheck Allow inheritible permissions and press copy. Click on everyone and put a checkmark in full control, press apply and ok and attempt to delete the key again.

Repeat the above procedure for ControlSet001, 002 although you might not find the service listed in those keys.

Hi, I did every step, but I was unable to find the file C:\WINDOWS\System32\31C533FD5F.dll in my computer, thus, I was unable to check it on Jotti's scanner. Also both Panda and Kaspersky found problems, the following are the logs:

Panda:

Incident Status Location

Virus:Trj/Downloader.FXM Disinfected C:\regular_plugin.exe
Virus:Trj/Omatib.A Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\autoupdatev2.exe
