can't load web pages, system slow

Unread postby thomas2010 » March 21st, 2010, 8:44 pm

Hi there

I've been having some issues with loading web pages in firefox/chrome/IE, loading stops part way through but housemates using the same router are not having issues (they are wireless, I'm wired by ethernet to the router). Oddly download speeds seem quite quick on my computer even though web pages take a long time to display if they will even load at all.

Not sure if relevant but recently had an alert from PC tools spyware "system event blocked, threat name Adware.eZula, Spyware Doctor has blocked an application attempting to access the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MEMWARP.dll" and exact same thing with file "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MEMWARP.ocx" but infection was cleaned for both files.

Here is my HijackThis log:

Hello and welcome to the forum.
My name is Airscape and I'll be helping you with your malware issues.
HijackThis logs can take time to analyze. Please be patient with me.

Take note of following before we begin:
Copy the instructions to Notepad or print them, as you may be offline during parts of the fix.
  • Post to this thread only and please stick to it until you are given an All Clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that your computer is clean.
  • The instructions I give are for This computer only and should not be used on any other pc.
  • Do NOT run any tools/scans unless I instruct you to.
  • Try not to install/uninstall any programs while we work. This will add extra time researching your logs.
  • If you have found assistance elsewhere and no longer require our help, please say so, and this topic will be closed.
  • If you have any problems, please stop and ask before proceeding with any fixes.

Note: As I'm in training at MRU everything I post must be checked by an expert first. So there may be a slight delay in between posts.

No reply within 3 days will result in your topic being closed.

If you read this before I get the chance to post, please post a new HijackThis log and uninstall list.

Re: can't load web pages, system slow

Unread postby thomas2010 » March 23rd, 2010, 12:13 pm

Hi Airscape

Whilst running the scans had 3 alerts from spyware doctor,
all Adware.eZula attempting to access
C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE{5B974CFC-6787-47D2-AF41-C3C7905ED389}\RP472\A0090640.DLL
Same as above but \RP462\A0089630.DLL
and C:\PROGRAM FILES\REGISTRY PATROL\MEMWARP.DLL

Internet pages still loading very slowly if at all, file downloads are quick though and system is running quickly on non-internet related tasks.
Here's the requested logs.

Thanks again
Tom

Re: can't load web pages, system slow

Unread postby thomas2010 » March 23rd, 2010, 3:36 pm

Apologies for this Airscape, I know I'm not supposed to do any other scans while we're working together - since my last post my PC tools spyware doctor done an automated scan, it found 8 tracking cookies which I removed. I didn't realise it was running. I will change the settings so it doesn't do any more scans at the moment. I thought you should know in case this changes anything, again apologies

Hi,

Uninstall programs

Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click Add/Remove Programs
Right-click on the programs below.
Click Remove.

Askbar --- don't worry if this is missing.
Registry Patrol
Registry Mechanic
Spyware Doctor

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.

Note on Registry Cleaners:
Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference.
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

Here's some more info:
http://miekiemoes.blogspot.com/2008/02/ ... ng_13.html

  4. Click No when you get the option to run ERUNT at Windows startup.
  5. During the installation, check Launch ERUNT
  6. Accept the defaults for running a backup

-----------------------------

Download/Run OTM

Hi Airscape

Askbar, Registry patrol and registry mechanic were not in the add/remove program list. (Spyware doctor was and I removed). The pc is much the same, ok on non internet tasks but still slow with sporadic page loading on the internet using firefox though I would say there has been a little improvement in the success of being able to load a page after clicking on things several times.

Requested logs posted below

All the best

Tom

Unread postby Airscape » March 25th, 2010, 9:13 pm

Hi thomas2010,

May I ask which type of internet connection you use? (dial-up/broadband, etc)

Upload a file

Please goto Jotti or Virustotal to upload a suspicious file.
Click on the Browse button next to the white box.
Navigate to the file below and click on it.

C:\Documents and Settings\Tom\Desktop\rvd.exe

Click the Open button.
Click the Submit/Sendfile button.
The file will be scanned by several anti-virus programs, please be patient while it finishes.
Once complete, copy/paste all results from each AV in your next reply.

----------------------------------------

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here
  • Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
  • Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
  • The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
  • Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
  • A black box should briefly appear and then close. This will enable your Control Panel and stop the Administrative warnings, at least until the malware infection resets the registry policy keys again. You can run this as many times as you like. A permanent fix requires removing the infection.

--------------------------------

Reset XP firewall
  • Click Start > Run > type Firewall.cpl and click OK
  • Click on the Advanced tab >> Restore Defaults >> At the prompt click on Yes >> OK
  • On the General tab, click Off (not recommended).
  • Click OK.

------------------------------

Rooter.exe
Download Rooter.exe from Here & save it to your desktop.
SCAN
  • Double-click on Rooter.exe on your desktop, to run the tool
  • The Rooter interface will appear, with a variety of options displayed
  • Click on Scan
  • Once the scan has finished a log will open called "Rooter#.txt. The log can also be found at %systemdrive%\Rooter$\Rooter#.txt (# is the number assigned to the report)
  • Click Close to exit the program
  • Copy/paste the contents of Rooter#.txt in your next reply

------------------------------

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted to Reboot (Restart), click "Yes".

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted.
It should not take longer than a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

------------------------------

Please post back with the following:
Jotti or Virustotal results
Rooter#.txt
Answer to the question Regarding the internet connection?
How is the pc running... is the browser still slow?

Thanks.

Hi Airscape

Thanks for all your hard work so far, I'm using a broadband connection. The browser is still very slow, it will sit there loading continuously without displaying a page but if I reload or type the web address in, the page will sometimes flash up straight away, or else it will keep on trying to load and take forever!

Cheers

Tom

Hi,

Can you run this scan please.

MBR Rootkit Detector:

Please download MBR Rootkit Detector by GMER and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the MBR.exe file to run it.
  • A window will open briefly then close.
  • A log will be produced & saved to the desktop, called MBR.log.
  • Please post the contents of that log in your next reply.

Hi,

How are things running now?

GooredFix-Option 1

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click GooredFix.exe to run it.
  • Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt).
Note: Do not run Option 2 yet.

----------------------------

Gmer

Please disconnect from the internet and disable your computer's security programs, as they will likely interfere with Gmer. See Here

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here and save to your desktop.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. UNCHECK the following:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Connect back up to the internet and re-enable your computer's security programs.

-------------------------------

Please post back with the following:
1.GooredLog.txt
2.Gmer log
3.How is the pc running.

Thanks.

Howdy

hope you're well.

I doulble clicked on GooredFix.exe and and didn't get any further options (so wasn't able to select 1. Find Goored (no fix)), it created a file GooredFix.txt which is posted below and a folder on the desktop called GooredFix Backups.

GMER crashed about 40 mins into its scan so I ran it again overnight and as far as I know it completed.

The pc is much the same as before, about 50% of the time it loads a webpage fast, the other 50% its either very slow or won't get the page at all. AVG is unable to update because the download speed is minimal (ie displayed in bytes) and so times out. Non internet tasks still running ok.

Quick question - I deleted spyware doctor as requested a few posts back now, am I ok to be out on the internet without it? Does Spybot search and destroy do the same job?

Thanks for your help

Tom

Re: can't load web pages, system slow

Unread postby thomas2010 » March 27th, 2010, 1:59 pm

Hi Airscape

Have just had the pc switch itself off on me, it restarted itself and once it had come up a windows dialog box came up and said the system has recovered from a serious error (this is what happened last night when I ran the GMER scan).

One further thing, I'm using a laptop connected wirelessly to the same router my desktop pc is attached to. When I replied to your last post on the desktop the page wouldn't load once I had pushed the submit button. I checked the forum using the laptop and the post had got through to the website yet the desktop couldn't load the page to say it had been submitted.

I'm not sure whether this stuff is relevant or not but I've put it down in case it is any help to you!

Do you think this is fixable or am I better off reformating the drive and starting from scratch?

Many thanks for your advice

Tom
