Sorry for the delay, I've been testing a few things to try and figure the best approach.

I need a bit more info off your machine first.

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad.
Save it as "All Files" and name it look.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
type c:\boot.ini >> %Temp%\KatLook.txt
Echo ........................... >> %Temp%\KatLook.txt
type C:\Windows\look.bat >> %Temp%\KatLook.txt
Echo ........................... >> %Temp%\KatLook.txt
dir /a /d /s C:\cmdcons >> %Temp%\KatLook.txt
notepad %Temp%\KatLook.txt
del /q %0
exit

Double click on look.bat
This shouldn't take long

Notepad will open, please copy/paste the results here.

Let's try the easiest option first ....

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 1

Create A Batch File
Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad.
Save it as "All Files" and name it Rename.bat Please save it on your desktop.

@Echo Off
attrib -a -h -s -r c:\boot.ini
If exist c:\boot.ini.katana goto Replacebootini
copy c:\boot.ini c:\boot.ini.katana
If exist C:\Cmdcons rd /s /q C:\Cmdcons
Echo Please continue with step 2
pause
Exit
:Replacebootini
ren c:\boot.ini boot.ini.old
copy c:\boot.ini.katana c:\boot.ini
Echo Please continue with step 4
pause
del /q %0
Exit

Double click on Rename.bat

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 2

Please follow the instructions at the following link to install the recovery console from the CD
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 3

Please double click Rename.bat again

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 4

Try booting your machine to recovery console without using the CD
If you are successful, please try the Maxlook instructions again
ie.
Execute the following bolded command at the C:\windows> prompt

batch look.bat

Hi Katana. Sorry for the delay. I’ve been out of pocket for the last couple of days. Anyway, I was unable to achieve success. First of all, the XP CD I’ve been using is for SP1 and my machine is running SP2. So I cannot simply install the Recovery Console to my hard drive. I had to employ the procedure located here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871

After I got everything set up according the preceding procedure, I attempted to run your script (which I can see attempts to remove the cmdcons directory) and it failed with “Access Denied” on every file within the cmdcons folder. So I then tried to delete the Recovery Console manually using the procedure located at the link you gave me (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654) and I also got “Access Denied” on all the files within the cmdcons folder. I then tried logging in as administrator and also tried deleting it in Safe Mode. I also tried unchecking the “read-only” option within folder properties, but it keeps changing it back to read-only. I checked my permissions and I have “full control” but I cannot delete the folder or its individual files. My guess is that files within this folder are in use by windows and “locked.”

So, I can't seem to get rid of the Recovery Console...

This should get rid of it :)
Custom OTL Script:

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    Code: Select all
    :Files
    C:\Cmdcons

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top.
  • If OTL asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTL

I was able to remove the Recovery Console using the instructions in your last post. But I was NOT able to reinstall it using any of the Microsoft procedures. The setup wizard will not "integrate" the SP1 and SP2 files as advertised. Since I removed it from my hard drive, I tried booting to the recovery console using the CD to see if it behaved any differently, but still could not access the c:\windows folder. Still thinks the c: drive is a floppy drive with no media in it.

Two things to try .....

1) Boot to recovery console from the CD you have and then type the following

CD /d C:\Windows <Press Enter>

Now try the DIR command. If it lists the contents the return to the batch look.bat instructions

If it doesn't work, reboot normally and try the following
2)

Recovery Console

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System - (SP3 Users should download the SP2 pack)
Windows XP Home Edition SP2

Image

Download the file & save it as its originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Re: Mbam cannot remove "Trojan.PWS"

Unread postby av8r » April 29th, 2010, 12:39 am

Hello Katana. The first option did not work, so I proceeded with the second option using Combofix. ComboFix gave me a message that the recovery console was successfully installed, but it did not open a log named CF_RC.txt. It gave me the ComboFix.txt log it normally does and that log follows. I tried to boot to the recovery console to see if it was indeed successful, but the machine crashed with the BSOD, same as before. If the information you are trying to gather with the LOOK.BAT script can be gathered manually, let me know what you're looking for or how to do it and I’ll give it the old college try…

Hello av8r,
Sorry for the delay responding to your last post. Katana is unavailable for the moment, so I will try to help you. If I ask you to download a program and you already have a copy if it, let me know... depending on the program, it may need to be replaced.

Please try to minimize the use of the problem computer. Do not reboot your machine unless instructed.

Please do not make any changes to your system: do not add or remove any software, run any scans or "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given. lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

It's been a few days since the last scan was performed, so I'd like to get some current information.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
If you already have this program installed, please proceed to the Run: portion of these instructions.
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
This is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
ERUNT utility program
Download:

  1. Please download ERUNT...by Lars Hederer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click erunt-setup-exe to run the install process. Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  3. Use the default install settings...
  4. Make sure the first two check boxes -> (Create ERUNT and NTREGOPT desktop icons) are checked.
Say "NO" if prompted or asked if you want to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this later.
  5. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  6. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is fine.
  7. Click on OK ... then click on "YES" to create the folder.
Run:
This will create a full backup of your registry... ERUNT can be used to restore the registry from this backup, if needed.
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT, then double-click ERUNT from the menu.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
DelDomains
Please download: DelDomains.inf...Created by: Mike Burgess Microsoft MVP.
Save it to your desktop.
  1. Locate DelDomains.inf
  2. Right-click and select Install...(no need to restart - there is no on-screen action)
This removes all entries in the Trusted, Restricted, and Enhanced Security Configuration Zones.
Note:
After running DelDomains... entries made from 3rd party processes (Spyware Blaster, IE-Spyad, etc.) need to be reapplied.

Step 3.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it... read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  2. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
These log files can be found in the C:\RSIT folder
  3. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hello Wingman. Thank you for taking over for Katana. And sorry for my delay. I’ve been out of town for a few days.

I did everything as instructed with only one glitch. When I ran RSIT, the “txt.log” indicated that the HijackThis portion failed, probably because it wasn’t on my desktop and I was not connected to the internet (I am trying to stay disconnected from the internet as much as possible until I get this virus off my machine). I moved my copy of HijackThis to my desktop and reran RSIT. The second run appears successful, but it did not recreate the “info.txt” log, so you will notice its date/time stamps preceeds “txt.log”. Other than this, everything went smoothly.

Let me know what you want to try next.

Hello av8r,

According to your last post to Katana, you successfully installed (RC) Recovery Console, correct?
If yes, I would like you to try the instructions previously posted by Katana. You should still have the programs on your desktop, there is no need to download them again, unless you no longer have them. Ignore the download instructions, unless needed.

Katana wrote:We need to see this infection active for now, so please leave the machine connected to the internet during these steps.

Hopefully, this should tell us which the problem file is.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 1
Please download maxlook, saving the file to your desktop.
Double click maxlook.exe to run it. Note - you must run it only once!
As instructed when the tool runs, restart the computer and logon to the Recovery Console.
Execute the following bolded command at the C:\windows> prompt

batch look.bat

Image

You will see 1 file copied many times then return to the x:\windows> prompt.
Type Exit to restart your computer then logon in normal mode.

Click Start >> Run and then type the following in the run box

maxlook -sig

(note the space before the - sign)
It will produce looklog.txt on the desktop and open it.
Please post the results here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step 2

Please download HelpAsst_mebroot_fix.exe and save it to your desktop.
Close out all other open programs and windows.
Double click the file to run it and follow any prompts.
If the tool detects an mbr infection, please allow it to run mbr -f and shutdown your computer.
Upon restarting, please wait about 5 minutes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

*In the event the tool does not detect an mbr infection and completes, click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

mbr -f

Now, please do the Start>Run>mbr -f command a second time.
Now shut down the computer (do not restart, but shut it down), wait a few minutes then start it back up.
Give it about 5 minutes, then click Start>Run and type the following bolded command, then hit Enter.

helpasst -mbrt

Make sure you leave a space between helpasst and -mbrt !
When it completes, a log will open.
Please post the contents of that log.

Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. Step1. maxlook -sig (looklog.txt)
  3. Step2. reports from all executed commands.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hi Wingman. No, I am not able to boot to the recovery console (RC). We've installed it twice using ComobFix (two different ways), but I cannot boot to it without getting the BSOD. I have a Windows XP disk that I can boot the RC with, but it is for a different computer than mine and an eariler service pack of XP (my computer is a Dell and did not come with any CDs). When I boot to that RC, I cannot execute the instructions provided by Katana because it doesn't recognize my hard drive. The only drive it sees is the one with the CD in it. So, we've been stalled for a while trying to figure out how to get the RC functional on my hard drive.

I do not have access to an SP2 installation CD. However, I do have the I386 folder on my hard drive. Also, just so you know, with Katana’s help, I also tried to install the RC using the Microsoft procedure found here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900871
It attempts to “integrate” SP1 from the CD and SP2 that is already on the machine so that you can install the RC. That didn’t work either. So, if there is some way to use the I386 folder, I’m ready to give it a try.

Hi av8r,

Based on the location of the I386 folder... you have to change if not located in the C:\Windows folder

Go to Start > All Programs > Run
type in the proper folder location... there is a space before /cmdcons

C:\WINDOWS\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

Try this and let me know how it goes.
