Spyware issues including search engine redirect

Unread postby emoulding » March 7th, 2010, 6:10 pm

Hi,

My husband's laptop has been having many issues lately, the most noticeable of which is the redirecting of search engine links to other sites. There's also a Just-In-Time Debugging thing that pops up continually. It's slow, and I'm sure that these are far from the only problems.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Spyware issues including search engine redirect

Unread postby Dakeyras » March 11th, 2010, 10:06 am

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
Hi emoulding and welcome to Malware Removal. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Peer to Peer Advice:

If I may bring to your attention to the below forum policy:-

P2P file sharing programmes

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

LimeWire 5.1.1

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Note: Both logs can also be located within this folder rsit at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rsit

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your husbands computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Limewire is gone.

Performance: One thing I forgot to mention in the original post is that the computer won't download anything. The hijack this, the rsit, I downloaded spyware s+d a week or so ago (before I decided that this job was too much for me) have all been downloaded on my computer and transferred. I don't know if it's just spyware related things or if it won't download anything. It's also been freezing a lot lately, though this could be just age (it's around 4 years old). ETA: I think the freezing thing is when the screen turns off, it won't come back on again.

Logs to come in next posts.

Re: Spyware issues including search engine redirect

Unread postby Dakeyras » March 12th, 2010, 6:43 am

Hi. :)

One thing I forgot to mention in the original post is that the computer won't download anything. The hijack this, the rsit, I downloaded spyware s+d a week or so ago (before I decided that this job was too much for me) have all been downloaded on my computer and transferred.
OK, did you use a form of USB drive to transfer the applications and or a CDR for example?

If the former we will have to to disinfect the USB drive and do not connect it to the computer that is not infected for the time being. Can you inform myself what operating system is in use on the computer you downloaded the applications on before transferring them.

Also for the time being keep the internet connection on the infected machine deactivated until I advise otherwise.

Answer the above please as this I will need to know, thank you.

Next:

In the meantime you can carry out a few proactive tasks on the computer that is infected as follows:-

Show Hidden Files:

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Uninstall Applications:

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 7.0.9 <-- We will update this in due course.
Java(TM) 6 Update 17 <-- As above.
Spybot - Search & Destroy <-- You may reinstall this when I give the all clear. It is best removed so it does not hinder the malware removal process below.
Viewpoint Media Player <-- This has some undersirible characteristics.

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next:

Please re-open HiJackThis and select Do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

-I am using a USB drive to transfer anything that needs to be downloaded. The USB drive can be cleaned after all this is done, and I'm not particularly concerned about my own computer as I have a new one on the way, although a quick check wouldn't hurt. My own laptop runs Windows XP, SP3. The USB stick is also where files and folders are backed up from his laptop.

-The internet is now turned off on his laptop, and the laptop is not being used for anything until this process is finished.

-Any logs that are requested will need to be transferred via the USB stick since there is no other way of getting them without the internet on. You haven't asked for any this round, so let me know if this is ok. It hasn't been connected to either computer since my last post.

Hidden files: shown
System files: shown
Applications requested: removed
-I would prefer to install Foxit instead of Adobe Reader when this is done
HijackThis line items: removed
-note: two entries are still there after completion of everything else including the restart. These ones:
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: IEHOME.LNK = C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp\iehome.bat (User 'Default user')
O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
Folders: removed EXCEPT
-Adobe would not delete, access denied on "AcroIEHelper.dll"
-Spybot would not delete, access denied on "advcheck.dll" and "TeaTimer.exe"
-AOL, Antispyware, Ares, Registry Helper were not there
Disk Cleanup: run
-note that there are 2 drives, C and D, and D appears to be empty except for a shortcut to C and two hidden folders "RECYCLER" and "System Volume Information"
Rebooted

Hi. :)

A very concise update, thank you!

I'm not particularly concerned about my own computer as I have a new one on the way, although a quick check wouldn't hurt.
By all means we can do so when completed the malware removal process with your husbands laptop.

I would prefer to install Foxit instead of Adobe Reader when this is done
Noted.

Take your time with the below, any problems encountered inform myself straight away, thank you.

Next:

The following is to be downloaded to your computer:-

Flash_Disinfector:

  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Next:

Now please download the following to your USB drive:-

Remove your USB Drive safely from the Non Infected computer.

Next:

Now please connect your USB Drive to your husbands laptop, then transfer all of the previously downloaded files to the desktop.

Next:

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: A logfile will have been created, it can be located at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rkill.txt.

Next:

  • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Next:

Activate the internet connection for the laptop:-

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Next:

Any problems encountered do not proceed any further, deactivate the laptops internet connection and inform myself.

If none proceed to the below:-

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

Click on Start >> Run...(or the Windows key and R together) to bring up the Run box and and copy and paste in:
"%userprofile%\desktop\rsit.exe" /info
and click on OK

  • Click on Run and RSIT will start.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is the computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • rkill.txt
  • exehelperlog.txt
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new set of RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

I can't download flash_disinfector! It downloads partway, then says it can't save there because "you cannot change the contents of that folder". It's now sitting on my desktop as flash_disinfector.exe.part, and it won't let me delete it either. It looks almost like what my husband's laptop was doing, but his didn't tell me why it couldn't download. I have a download helper addon for firefox, so that could be the difference. I could delete stuff on his computer too.

I'm the administrator and only account on my laptop, if that helps.

False alarm! It looks like Sophos quarantined it for some reason ("potentially unwanted"), so once I found that it downloaded fine. I am continuing with the instructions and will post again once they are complete.

Update:
-all logs in next posts

Flash disinfector: run
-this appears to have disabled the firewall (Windows Firewall) on my computer, and I can't turn it back on, either through the Windows Security thing or directly in the control panel.
Files transferred: done
-the antivirus auto-protect (Norton) on his laptop deleted exeHelper, it said it detected a Trojan. I disabled the auto-protect and it worked fine.
Rkill: run
exeHelper: run
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: run, issues fixed.
-during reboot, the computer ran a disk check, was this expected? I let it run as it looked right. The log is included in case anything is relevant.
-after this step, I turned off the internet. Your instructions said to do this if there were problems, but didn't say whether to turn it off if not. I figured that there could be no harm in turning it off anyways.
RSIT: run
-the first time I ran it, it produced only log.txt. I ran again by double-clicking, and it still would only produce log.txt.
